Mark Twain(1835-1910)--Born in Florida, Missouri --The 3rd son,6th of seven children,only three of his siblings survived childhood.--Twain’s father was an attorney and a local judge.

-Turned to editorial work on the Ohio State Journal during1856 to 1861.

-Accepted an editorial post on the Nation in New York in 1865.

-Worked on the Atlantic Monthly as assistant editor in January 1866 and was promoted to editor in chief in 1871

-Accepted the editorship of Harper's Monthly in 1886

• Mark Twain• Influenced by journalism, wedded to the

vernacular, direct and unadorned but also highly evocative and irreverently humorous – changed the way Americans write their language. His characters speak like real people and sound distinctively American, using local dialects, newly invented words, and regional accents.

• Held that truth is the highest beauty.

• Stressed the need for sympathy and moral integrity, and the need for different social classes to harmoniously adapt to their environment and to one another.
