Welcome to the International English Programs at the University of Toronto.
University of Toronto, New College offers students the opportunity to take part in a variety of International English Programs. The Programs provide customized educational and cultural experiences to students of all English abilities, from beginner to academic level. Throughout the Programs, students are immersed in an English environment that provides opportunities to explore Canadian culture while improving their English and academic skills at Canada’s premier university.

Toronto, CanadaWith a population of over 5 million people, Toronto is Canada’s largest city and has a reputation as the safest and cleanest major city in North America. It is consistently ranked as one of the top ten cities in the world in which to live and work.
Toronto’s multicultural population, which consists of over 100 language groups, makes it one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. From “Little Italy” to “Chinatown”, Toronto’s diverse ethnic fabric offers visitors a unique international experience.
Toronto’s scenic location on the northern shore of Lake Ontario is an ideal point of departure for visits to other Canadian destinations including Niagara Falls, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec City.

Youth English Programs (12 to 18 yrs)
General English Program (GEP)
age: 12–14 (Junior), 15-18 (senior)
Program length: 3 or 4 weeks
English Classes: 15 hours / week
English levels: beginner to advanced
The GEP offers daily classes led by professional English teachers that develop all aspects of the students’ English abilities. Specifically, classes focus on improving students’ speaking and listening skills through a variety of communicative activities. Classes also provide students with the opportunity to learn about the cultural sites and historical places that they will visit while exploring Toronto and experiencing Canadian culture.
Intensive English Program (IEP)
age: 12–14 yrs (Junior), 15–18 yrs (senior)
Program length: 4 weeks
English Classes: 30 hours / week
English levels: Intermediate to advanced
The IEP is a comprehensive course for intermediate and advanced students who want to develop their English abilities in a focused academic environment. Students benefit from an increased attention to conversation, vocabulary expansion, critical reading, and effective writing skills. With six hours of class each day, students in the Intensive English Program can expect a significant improvement in their English language abilities.
ToEfl iBT Preparation Program (TPP)
age: 15–18 (senior)
Program length: 4 weeks
English Classes: 30 hours / week
English levels: high-Intermediate to advanced
The TAPP focuses on developing the skills that are essential for success at an English language university and preparing students for the TOEFL iBT. Students focus on critical reading, oral presentations, essay writing, and research skills through a combination of classroom learning and research at the University of Toronto’s libraries. At the end of the Program, students take a TOEFL iBT Complete Practice Test.
IElTs Preparation Program (IPP)
age: 15–18 (senior)
Program length: 4 weeks
English Classes: 30 hours / week
English levels: high-Intermediate to advanced
The IPP focuses on developing the skills that are essential for success on the IELTS Academic Test while also preparing students for the communication demands at an English language university. Students focus on a variety of critical reading, discussion, essay writing, and academic listening skills. All students take a practice IELTS test at the end of the Program.

Morning CoursesGeneral English Course (GEC)
Course length: 4, 8 weeks
Classes: 9:00 to 12:00, monday to friday
English levels: beginner to advanced
GEC offers daily classes led by professional English teachers that develop students’ oral and written fluency and accuracy. Classes use an integrated skills approach that focuses on improving speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through a variety of communicative activities including group discussions and role plays as well as the use of authentic materials such as broadcast and print media.
Business fundamentals Course (BfC)
Course length: 4 weeks
Classes: 9:00 to 12:00, monday to friday
English levels: Intermediate to advanced
Business Experience: not required
Eligibility: minimum toefl ibt 60 or Ielts 5.0
BFC is designed for students who plan to use English in business and professional contexts. Classes prepare students for the demands of the global business world by focusing on verbal and written communication including: introductions, conversation strategies, negotiations, participating in meetings, making presentations, improving grammatical accuracy, writing effective emails, and using appropriate tone in business correspondence.

AFC is designed for students who would like to study in a challenging environment and develop the skills that are essential for success at an English language university. Students focus on developing critical reading, oral presentation, seminar discussion, note taking, essay writing, and research skills through a combination of classroom learning and research at the University of Toronto’s libraries.
Afternoon Coursesspeaking & Pronunciation Course (sPC)
Course length: 4, 8 weeks
Classes: 13:30 to 16:30, monday to friday
English levels: beginner to advanced
SPC uses a wide variety of classroom activities to improve each student’s ability to communicate in English. Specifically, classes concentrate on developing students’ pronunciation, listening, and conversation skills. Students also practice delivering oral presentations and participating in group discussions and debates.
ToEfl iBT Preparation Course (TPC)
Course length: 4 weeks
Classes: 13:30 to 16:30, monday to friday
English levels: high-Intermediate to advanced
TPC is designed for intermediate and advanced students who plan to study and live in an English speaking country and want to prepare for the TOEFL iBT during their stay at the University of Toronto. Throughout the course, students learn test taking strategies and develop the skills that are necessary to be successful on the TOEFL iBT. At the end of the course, students take the TOEFL iBT Complete Practice Test and receive their practice test scores.
IElTs Preparation Course (IPC)

Professional Business English (PBE)
Course length: 4 weeks
Classes: 9:00 to 12:00; 13:30 to 15:30, monday to friday

Business Experience: minimum 1 year of full-time

Eligibility: minimum toefl ibt 69 or Ielts 5.5
PBE is an intensive, content-driven business program designed for students who have been or are currently working in a professional context. The program consists of two courses: a course, taught by a business professional, that focuses on contemporary issues in global business and a supporting business English course taught by a language instructor. The aim of this program is to enrich students’ understanding of international business concepts including finance, marketing and management while providing language support to accompany the assigned oral, reading, listening and written activities.
advanced academic skills (aas)
Course length: 8 weeks
Classes: 9:00 to 12:00; 13:30 to 15:30, monday to friday
English levels: high Intermediate to advanced
Eligibility: minimum 2 years university study; toefl ibt 69
or Ielts 5.5
AAS program is designed for higher level students who wish to challenge themselves in a content-driven academic course. It consists of two courses: a Social Science course taught by a content expert and a supporting English language course taught by a language instructor. The aim of this program is to engage students in an environment modeled on English speaking university courses while sharpening their academic listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Students will be exposed to a variety of challenging authentic contexts (e.g. texts, discussions, research, etc.).
Teaching English Course (TEC)
Course length: 4, 8 weeks
Classes: 9:00 to 12:00; 13:30 to 15:30, monday to friday
English levels: high-Intermediate to advanced
TEC is designed for international teachers of English who are seeking professional development. The course focuses on current English teaching methodology and introduces a variety of topics including: teaching speaking and writing, syllabus design, choosing course books, lesson planning, testing methods, and integrating a communicative approach to language learning.

Cultural activitiesA variety of afternoon activities, evening events, and weekend trips are organized for students by International English Programs’ staff. From Toronto’s many distinguished art galleries and museums, to its fashionable shopping districts and eclectic nightlife, the city’s diversity makes Toronto an ideal destination for international visitors.
Afternoon and Evening Events offer opportunities to attend world-class theatrical and musical performances, explore Toronto’s vibrant ethnic neighborhoods, shop in the city’s trendiest areas, and experience some of Toronto’s most popular events including an outdoor cultural festival at Toronto Harbourfront, a professional baseball game at the Rogers Centre, and a trip to one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World—the CN Tower.
youth Program EventsWeekend Trips allow students to relax and enjoy Canada’s culture and geography with trips to Toronto’s Centre Island, a visit to Canada’s Wonderland—Canada’s premier amusement park—and an unforgettable boat ride to the base of Niagara Falls.
adult Program EventsStudents are also encouraged to join guided tours of French Canada and New York City. The French Canada Tour explores the cradle of French civilization in North America through visits to Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City, while the New York City Tour offers a distinctly American experience that includes trips to Broadway, Central Park, Times Square, SoHo, Greenwich Village, Fifth Avenue, and the Empire State Building.

accommodation During the summer months, students can live in the safe and secure environment of the dormitory-style New College Residence on the University of Toronto’s downtown campus. The residence is located in the centre of Toronto, walking distance from most of Toronto’s major tourist attractions. Each student is offered a comfortable and air-conditioned room with high-speed internet access. Living in residence provides students with a unique opportunity to learn about different cultures, live with their classmates from around the world, and practice speaking English.
foodThe newly renovated Audrey Taylor Dining Hall in New College provides students with a comfortable dining area to enjoy the “all-you-can-eat” menu. Students can watch as professional chefs prepare their delicious daily entrées in a unique “display style cooking” kitchen.
