IMpORTANT INFORMATION CONCERNING uHF CB RAdIO TheuseoftheCitizenBandradioserviceislicensedinAustraliabytheACMARadiocommunications(CitizensBandradioStations)ClassLicenceandinNewZealandby theMinistryofEconomicDevelopmentNewZealand(MED).AGeneralUserRadioLicence forCitizensBandradioandoperationissubjecttoconditionscontainedinthoselicences.
TheclasslicenceforusersandequipmentoperatingintheCB/PRS477MHzbandhasbeenamended.Thisradiomeetsthenew80channelstandard.
Insimpletermsthesameamountofspectrumisavailable;however,radiotransceiverscannowoperateinanarrowerbandwidthandhenceuselessspectrum.Theseradiosaregenerallyreferredtoasnarrowbandor12.5kHzradios.Byusing12.5kHzchannelspacinginsteadof 25kHz,the40channelsoriginallyallocatedcannowbeexpandedto80channelstherebydoublingthechannelcapacityandrelievingcongestionintheUHFCB/PRSband.
Original40channelwidebandradioswillcontinuetooperateontheoriginal40channels,howevertheywillnotbeabletoconverseonthenewerchannels41–80.Thenewernarrowbandradioswillbeabletoconversewithallolder40channelwidebandradiosonallchannels1to40aswellasthenewerchannelsallocatedfrom41to80.
Themixingofnarrowbandandwidebandradiosinthesamespectrumcancausesome possibleoperatingissuesofinterferenceandvaryinglevelsofreceivedvolume.
Possible issues
Whenanewnarrowbandradioreceivesatransmissionfromanolderwidebandradiothe speechmaysoundloudanddistorted–simplyadjustyourradiovolumeforbestperformance.
Whenanolderwidebandradioreceivesasignalfromanewnarrowbandradio,thespeech maysoundquiet–simplyadjustyourradiovolumeforbestperformance.
Dependingonhowcloseyourreceivingradioistoanothertransmittingradio,therecanbeinterferencefromthetransmittingradioifitisusingachanneladjacenttothechannelyouarelisteningto.Simplytrygoingupordownafewchannelsfromthecurrentlyselectedchannel.
Theabovesituationsarenotafaultoftheradiobutasymptomofoperatingwidebandandnarrowbandradiosinthesamebandwidth.Thispossibleinterferencewilldecreaseovertime asthepopulationofwidebandradiosagesanddecreases.

TheACMAhasallocatedchannels5/35foremergencyuseonly.Channel5istheprimary SimplexEmergencyChannel.Whereachannel5repeaterisavailable,youshouldselect DuplexonCH5.
NoTe: Channel35istheinputchannelforthechannel5repeaterthereforechannel35 shouldalsonotbeusedforanythingotherthanemergencytransmissions.
TeleMeTRY CHANNels
ACMAregulationshaveallocatedchannels22and23fortelemetry-onlyapplicationsandhaveprohibitedthetransmissionofspeechonthesechannels.Consequentlytheradiohasa transmit-inhibitappliedtochannels22and23.
Intheeventthatadditionaltelemetry/telecommandchannelsareapprovedbytheACMA, thesechannelsshallbeaddedtothosecurrentlylistedwherevoicetransmissionisinhibited.Currently,transmissionsonchannels61,62and63arealsoinhibitedandthesechannelsarereservedforfutureallocation.

WhileinStandbymodeitwillstillcheckforincomingsignalsbutitwilldrawconsiderablylesspowerfromthebatterypack.Assoonasasignalisheardorthekeysarepressedtheradiowill‘wakeup’again.ThisStandbymodeisautomaticandbyitselfcanextendthebatterylifebymanyhours.

Theradiodrawsmorepowerfromthebatterypackwhenscanningthanwhenmonitoringasinglechannel.Thisisbecauseitmust‘wakeup’moreoftentomonitoreachchannelforactivity.Youcan‘squeeze’thatextrabitoflifefromthebatterypackbyavoidinganyunnecessaryscanning.Inaddition,scanningincreasesthechanceoffindingasignaltherebykeepingthereceiver‘awake’ andthesquelchopenmoreoften.

Thetransmitterhasbothhighandlowpowersettings.Ifyouareonlyoperatingovershortdistances,areinareasonablyhighlocationorareclosetoalocalrepeater,tryusingtheLowtransmitterpowersetting.Thisreducesthetransmitterpowerto1watteffectivelydoublingthetalktimeavailable.

Display lighting
TheLCDbacklightingactivatesautomaticallywheneverakeyispressedandturnsoffautomaticallyafterabout5seconds.
Receiving signals
Whiletheradioisnotreceivingsignals,itwillremaininstandbymodetoconservebatterypower.Whenasignalisreceived,theLEDindicatorontheupperedgeoftheradiowilllightGREEN and the
iconwillappearonthedisplay.AdjustthevoluMecontrolforacomfortablelisteninglevel.
IftheincomingsignalisencodedwithaCTCSSorDCStonematchingtheonesetinyourradio,theLEDindicatorwilllightORANGEandyouwillbeabletohearthesignalinthespeaker.IftheLEDindicatorlightsGREEN and the iconappearsbutyoucannothearthesignal,itislikelythattheincomingsignalisusingadifferentCTCSSorDCStonetothatselectedinyourradio(seeMenuoptionsformoredetailsonsettingCTCSS/DCStones).

Transmitting
Totransmit,pressandholdthePTT (Push-To-Talk)switch.Theotherradioyouaretalkingtomustbesettothesamechannel.Holdtheradioapproximately5to8cmfromyourmouthwiththeantennaverticalandspeakintothebuilt-inmicrophone.
WhilethePTTswitchispressed,theLEDindicatorontheupperedgeoftheradiowilllightREDandthe iconwillappearontheLCD.Whenyouhavefinishedspeaking,releasethePTTswitchtoreceiveincomingsignals(itisnotpossibletotransmitandreceiveatthesametime).Ifnofurthersignalsarereceived,theunitwillreverttostandbymode.

ToactivatetheKeypadLockpresstheFkey(theFiconwillappear)thenholdthe keyuntil theradiobeeps.The iconwillappearonthedisplay.

Duplex operation
Duplexoperationallowstheradiototransmitonadifferentfrequencytothatwhichitreceives.Thisallowsoperationthroughrepeaterstationsinyourarea.Repeatersautomaticallyre-transmityoursignaloveramuchwiderarea,providinggreatlyincreasedrange.TheDuplexmodeonlyworksondesignatedrepeaterchannels1–8and41–48.WithDuplexselectedononeofthesechannels,yourradioactuallytransmits30channelshigherthanitreceives.

Duplexcanbeenabledordisabledseparatelyonindividualchannels.WhenDuplexisenabledon theselectedchannel, isdisplayed.

CTCSS(ContinuousToneCodedSquelchSystem)andDCS(DigitalCodedSquelch)aresimilarsquelchquietingsystemsthatallowgroupsofuserstosharethesamechannelwithoutdisturbingeachother.TheCTCSSsystemuses1of50lowfrequencytonestoopenandclosethesquelchontheradio.TheDCSsystemissimilartoCTCSSbutuses1of104digitalcodestocontrolthesquelch.WhenCTCSSorDCSisenabledonyourradio,onlysignalsthatareusingthesamecodeasyourradiowillbeheardinthespeakerandthesquelchwillremainclosedtoallothersignals.
NotethatCTCSSandDCScodesdonotpreventothersfromhearingyourtransmission.
