Australia – a multi-cultural country Australia is a multi-cultural country. 250 years ago it was not
the English-speaking country it is today. The people who lived there were Aborigenes who arrived in Australia over 50,000 years ago. There are only about 400,000 Aborigenes today in a population of just 20 million.
The English arrived at the end of the 18th century. At first, Britain sent prisoners to Australia, beacuse the prisons were full in Britain. Then other people went too. These were mostly farmers. Then after 1850, people went there to look for gold. In the 20th century Australia needed people with skills, and in the 1960s a lot of European workers went there. After that many Asians went to live in Australia.
Today most Australians live in big cities like Sydney, and Melbourne on the coast.
Australia is one of the dries areas in the world, not many people live far away from the coast.
