Looking fitWall Street expects another standout quarterly report card from Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The retailer has recovered strongly over the past year after reporting a loss for the quarter ended in April. Solid demand for apparel and equipment for home exercising and outdoor fitness amid the pandemic lockdowns have helped drive the company’s earnings and revenue sharply higher since then. Analysts predict more of the same Tuesday, when the retailer serves up its fiscal fourth-quarter results.

Inflation bellwetherEconomists project that prices at the consumer level increased modestly last month.

The Labor Department’s consum-er price index, due Wednesday, is expected to show annual inflation picked up in February to 1.8% from 1.4% in January, driven by higher energy prices. Inflation has been a no-show over the past decade, with annual price gains remaining well below the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, allowing the Fed to keep interest rates at record lows.

Job market monitorThe Labor Department issues its latest monthly snapshot of U.S. job openings Thursday.

Economists predict the number of available jobs edged lower in January to around 6.6 million from 6.65 million in December. The number of monthly job postings nationally has yet to return to the pre-pandemic level of at least 7 million, which had been the trend since early 2018. The tax filing season is off to a strong start.The IRS began accepting and processing

individual returns on Feb. 12. The pandemic pushed the start date a bit later than usual, but taxpayers were eager to act.

About 34.7 million tax returns came in during the first week of filing. That compares to about 15.8 million received in the first week last year.

While it’s difficult to compare this tax filing season to last, given the late start, it looks like taxpayers were eager to file. There are several possible reasons for the initial rush.

Financial woes from the pandemic may have

left taxpayers eager for their refunds. Refunds are a lifeline for many households. In general, lower income households and those due a refund tend to file earlier in the season than higher-income households, who might owe money or have more complex tax situations.

Also, people who did not receive their federal relief checks or got less than they were due could get that resolved by filing. There may also be some taxpayers who are eager to get their paperwork filed in case Congress passes further relief; the payments are doled out based on the information from your most recent tax return.
