• 不和孩子闹脾气 do not express anger to the students

• 不为小事而影响心情 “人不知而不愠” do not make a big deal out of small things “

• 及时和家长、学校管理层通气 communicating with parents/school administrating immediately if there is any problem.

挑战三：人际交流Fit-in

• 唯一的中文老师 being the only Chinese teacher

• 不属于初中也不属于高中 splitting schedule results in no time for interaction with collegues

• 美国日常生活文化，闲谈也有难度 Small talk is not “small”

心得体会Thoughts

• 不管多忙，一定要和同事讲话 build relationship with your colleagues

• 参加课外活动 Join your colleague for after-school activities

• 做一个好的聆听者 be a good listener• 敏而好学，多问问题 seek guidance

During my first year of teaching, I worked 70 to 80-hour weeks,

including time worked during the school day, in the evenings and

over the weekend

3. To contact parents (HW, TESTS, QUIZZES, etc.)

4. To communicate with other teachers

5. To observe classes

6. To make Chinese FUN!

My biggest challenge was developing reasonable expectations, from behavior to work effort to quality of work. It took

me months to get used to typical adolescent behavior—their language,

their humor, their sensitivity, their sometimes nonchalant attitude toward school work. And their mood swings! Now I'm much more relaxed with my students, much more compassionate,

and patient.

I would advise new teachers to think very carefully about their expectations—and that doesn't

mean giving up on high expectations—it just means

working to understand the minds and the abilities of their students.
