pursue and why?

What career would I pursue and why? What career would you pursue? In other words, what do you want to be
become when you are grown up? What is your dream? Questions that have been
asked consistently throughout my life and yet it is the most difficult as well as the
most important question that I was not quite sure until a few weeks ago.
Few weeks ago on newspaper, I read an article introducing about a
creative director. After reading the article and ponder through many years, I
finally made up my mind that I want to be a creative director. I have been quite
confident of myself that I usually get really excited when I deal with works that
need creativity.
Partially influenced by the ‘Entertainment, Media and Advertising’ unit
during the second semester of grade 11 English class, I was really fascinated by
the powerful impacts of advertisement on society. All things considered, I really
wish to pursue a creative director.

While searching through many universities, I was really fascinated with the advertising and promotion program provided in the Western Michigan University. WMU not only hold high world reputation, but also offers students with specific and detailed curriculum that is both relevant and effective. I expect to start my college life in WMU as an undergraduate major. In this occasion, I would like to ask a few questions that I have raised during the research. As a faculty of commerce WMU not only provide well-‐organized advertising and promotion program, but also help students to further expand their skills through ‘AdClub’ that is organized and ran by the students. I found that WMU encourages students with major art skill and the knowledge of many culture. I have lived my life in more than one country and have loads of knowledge on various cultures. I had my education in international school. I have won ARA awards every year since middle school and had extracurricular activities after school for 6 years.
The country, Indonesia, I have been living for whole life has renown for its unique art and Would these international experience and art skill provide an privileges for me to apply to the advertising and promotion program in WMU? Would they strengthen my application?
Thank you very much for your time for reading this letter. I am looking forward to hear from you. Sincerely, Yeon Jin Park

Should students study at universities in
their own countries?
A Step toward the Future
By Yeon Jin Park
Graduating a high school and moving to a university is deemed a huge step in our
live. It is a step closer to the reality, the first step on the development of the
individual’s independence as well as a step toward the one’s future career.
As a high school student, deciding university can be troublesome and
stressful. Today, there are myriad of choices of universities available, and it has
become a global trend to for many college students to venture abroad. According
to the Institute of International Education, the numbers of students studied
abroad have been increasing steadily. Last year, the number exceeded 300,000
and it is expected to continue. Then a natural question that will rise up in our
mind is: where should I attend a university? At my own country or another?
Enrolling in foreign university, students can have access to higher
educations. It not only builds strong individual independence but also helps
students to reach a wider, more diverse population. Depend on what career one
might pursue or where in the country he wants to work, enrolling university
abroad reaps huge advantages. For instance, a student who wishes to study
English may prefer to be educated at England or American to one’s national
university.
Nevertheless study abroad is like a double-‐edged sword that while there
are benefits, there are also some limitations. The three most common problems
students often face are: culture, finance, and safety. When students enroll in a
foreign university, they will experience a different culture. While this offers a
chance to absorb new culture that does not available in their own country, yet in
other words, it means a cultural barrier. While some students quickly adapt to
new culture, others might find it hard and struggle. The detrimental side is that it
will be depressing when what suppose to be voyage of discovery turns out to fail
as one finds hard to immerse oneself in the local culture.
Including the cost of transportations and accommodation, study abroad is
getting more expensive. The “convenient” and “safe” places remain the most
popular, thus the price remains high as well. This not only burdens the parents in
the matter of financial problem, but also pressures students to demonstrate its
educational value; thereby their stress level increases.
“I chose to study at American university since the they have highly
advanced course and they can even provide job for the graduate students” said
Angus Cheng, a recent graduate of Northeastern University. “I often missed my
family and home, I did not get along with new environment and culture at the first
time…”
All things considered, studying abroad engenders more of negative sides than the
positive sides. However, it is hard to say that everyone has the same outcome.
Everyone has different personalities and therefore their adaptability to the new
environment and culture highly depends on each individual’s capability.
Opportunities always multiply around us. It depends whether the individual seize
it or not. People have tendency to think that valuable things are always far away
from them. But actually they are not. We do not have to seek treasure from far
away. As an eminent writer Maurice Maeterlinck explicitly stated, “Remember, the
bird of paradise always alights on our heart.”
The writer is a Korean graduate of
the Seoul National University
who had spent her high school life
at Jakarta International School in Indonesia
