SERVICE LEARNING IN SCHOOLSCONCORDIA HOSTS HANOI CONFERENCE
Concordia International School Hanoi, along with our
sister schools Concordia Shanghai and HKIS, has long
been a leader in service learning as part of the everyday
curriculum. Educators in Hanoi were treated to something
incredibly special as our campus hosted Hanoi’s first
ever Service Learning Workshop. HKIS Teachers, Marty
Schmidt and Mike Kersten joined us from Hong Kong
to be the keynote speakers and facilitators of the all day
workshop and left attendees with wonderful inspiration
and information.
Other schools present included BIS, UNIS, Thai Nguyen
International University and social organizations including
LCMS World Mission, Donkey Bakery, Blue Dragon
Children’s Foundation, Flavours of Vietnam and Allianz.
Concordia Middle School students, Gracie and Daniel also
presented on their own service learning experiences.

EXPLORING BA VIGRADE 5 GETS FARMING!
Many famiies live in Hanoi find the proxikity of Ba Vi, located only 48 km (30 mi) west of the city, lends itself to being a wonderful respite for a weekend. The many farms, national parks, and other outdoor activities make staying there a hands on experience. Mr. Horvath’s Grade 5 students took an overnight trip to Ba Vi and had a chance to live the life of a farmer for a couple days. They learned about taking care of farm animals, how to catch fish, how to plant rice. The main product that students studied was tea- how to pick tea, how tea is processed into the final consumable product, and how to drink tea! By the end of it, students were acquainted with many of the ins and outs of what is around a Vietnamese farm. One of the favorite activities including trying to catch a chicken and eel relays.
Some of the adventure included hiking Ba Vi Mountain and exploring an old collapsed church from the French colonial period.

LOI KRATHONG FESTIVAL
The Loi Krathong festival has been celebrated throughout
Thailand for centuries, usually to mark the end of the
rainy season. Each year, thousands of paper lanterns are
released into the night sky to symbolically ward off bad
luck, while rivers are covered by floating flower lanterns,
cast into waterways to wish for good luck.

traditional costume at the Thai Embassy.
NATIONAL HONORS
Concordia Hanoi’s Charter Certificates
for being officially granted the privilege
to establish NATIONAL HONOR
SOCIETY & NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR
SOCIETY chapters finally arrived in

their teachers and then are chosen for
induction into the NHS & NJHS where
they participate in various leadership
and character-building activities.
MODEL UNITED NATIONS
Concordia Hanoi is in its fourth year of sending students to
the Model United Nations gatherings at our sister school
Concordia Shanghai’s campus. Model UN is an educational
simulation and/or academic competition in which students
can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the
United Nations.
This year, our very own High School student, Chris Byun,
has been selected in a leadership position for the upcoming
gathering. Her role will be Deputy Chair on the General
Assembly 1st Committee. This committee will deal with
issues relating to Disarmament and International Security.
