The Transition of the Significance of Cretcheu and amor in Morna

The singer Cesária Évora is famous for having spread Cabo Verdean culture to the world by singing morna and

coladeira. The former is a musical genre at the core of the cultural identity of Cabo Verde, while the latter, a

rhythmical dancing music, is a tradition of the northern islands of the country. The expression of love, cretcheu and

amor in Cabo Verdean Creole, is prominent in the lyrics of morna. Both terms certainly bear a special and profound

significance for the people of Cabo Verde who experienced a massive emigration in the past.

The present research is a study of the lyrics of morna in the period of Cesária Évora (end of the twentieth century)

and the present (beginning of the twenty-first century) to examine the significance of cretcheu and amor expressed

in her albums and also in the daily life of the people of Cabo Verde. The expression of cretcheu

and amor has a sens .g. love a person, with love, etc.). The author shows that, while cretcheu had

multiple and complex meanings in morna in every period, from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of

the twentieth century, it only has a single meaning morna

and coladeira was a way of inheriting the culture of Cabo Verde.

Differences and Similarities found in Japanese, English and Spanish Net-

Slang

Sebastian Uriel Chamorro

Technics for improving Presentations through Emphasis and Paraphrasing

This article studies how an oral presentation becomes easier to understand through the appropriate

use of emphasis and paraphrasing. It analyzes as a model a news commentary by presenter Jiro Shinbo.

Emphasis is used mainly in the introductory part of the commentary, to put focus on certa in news

among various others. As for paraphrasing, it is used when a difficult expression appears in the news

commentary.

The Analysis of the Factors that impede the Understanding of Concept

through Dialogue in Science Education

The aim of this study is to expose the causes behind the difficulties for students to understand scientific

concepts in discussion-based science education, where teachers often lack time to assist each student

efficiently. To identify such causes, the author analyzed conversations between students and with the

teacher in Osaka Prefecture third year junior high school classes. The results show without doubt that

difficulties arise from a lack of understanding of the concepts by the students and from discr epancies

in the interpretation of problem statements. This study ends with suggestions on how to reduce such

causes, suggestions whose efficiency will be established in further studies.

Media Culture and Narrative Identities: Constructing Cultural Narratives

The problem of identities has been discussed in various fields for a long time. However, the term identity had

become more complicated in . This paper explores the connections between identities and

narratives, because narrative seems key to understand what identities are. It also examines how we construct our

identity based on media culture. Media is key to understand how we define ourselves as well. We all express

ourselves in our culture through narratives. This perspective will show us a way of looking at recent cultures and

identities in this complicated global world.

Stories need audiences. Stories need to be heard and read, as well as spoken and written.

There is also a claim for community within the telling, a wish for participation, a drawing

in, a suspension of disbelief, an invitation to move into and to share, however briefly,

another world... They are an essential part of social reality, a key to our humanity, a link to,

and an expression of, experience. We cannot understand another culture if we do not

understand it stories. We cannot understand our own culture if we do not know how, why

and to whom our own storytellers tell their tales. (Silverstone 40)

Why Study the Media? 8 Media and Morality

Indeed narrative, as I have already briefly indicated, is central for an understanding of the

narrative that the world appears in its vividness and in its capacity to create and sustain

significance. It is in the stories we tell ourselves, the historical and contemporary as well

as the fantastic, that we seek and sometimes find the shareable meanings that create the

possibility for a shared understanding of the world. Narratives are inclusive even through

they exclude. (Silverstone 52)

They(identities) arise from the narrativization of the self, but the necessarily fictional

nature of this process in no way undermines its discursive, material or political effectivity,

partly, in the imaginary (as well as the symbolic) and therefore, always, partly constructed

in fantasy, or at least within a fantasmatic field. (Hall 4)

There is also the realm of use. We fashion ourselves from the cultural supermarket in a

1) Mediation involves the movement of meaning from one text to another, from

one discourse to another, from one event to another. It involves the constant transformation of meanings, both large

scale and small, significant and insignificant, as media texts and texts about media circulate in writing, in speech and

audiovisual forms, and as we, individually and collectively, directly and indirectly, contribute to their production.

Spain's immigration policy with West Germany under the administration of Francisco

Franco

desempleo no disminuyó.
