Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES)
Gemeinsame Initiative der Europäischen Kommission und der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation ESA
GMES verfolgt diese Ziele:
Aufbau eines eigenständigen europäischen Systems für Umwelt-und Sicherheitsüberwachung
Dauerhafte Bereitstellung nutzerfreundlicher Erdbeobachtungsdienste - insbesondere für die EU, aber auch für deren Mitgliedsstaaten
Zur Erfüllung gesetzlicher Aufgaben und EU/VN-Berichtspflichten in der Umweltverwaltung und Raumplanung, im Transportwesen und Zivilschutz, sowie bei der Katastrophenhilfe
Europäischer Beitrag zur Initiative "Global Earth Observation System of Systems" (GEOSS)
Schaffung eines europäischen Marktes für innovative Dienstleistungen
GMES verknüpft das Potenzial der satellitengestützten Erdbeobachtung mit terrestrischen, flugzeuggestützten, maritimen und weiteren Datenquellen sowie moderner Datenverarbeitung.

Zusammenfassung & Ausblick
GMES Land Monitoring entwickelt Landnutzungserfassungs-/-
änderungsdienste, die
globale bis lokale Maßstäbe umfassen,
grenzübergreifend harmonisiert sind,
ein nachhaltiges und vergleichbares Monitoring ermöglichen,
für unterschiedliche darauf aufbauende Fachapplikationen
bedienen können,
mit klarer Spezifikation und transparenter Methodik
kosteneffizient produziert werden können,
Standardisierung und Interoperabilität erlauben.
Erste Dienste sind operationell verfügbar, Aktualisierungen
bereits geplant bzw. angestoßen
Budgets auf Europäischer bzw. nationaler Ebene sollen
regelmäßige Aktualisierungen sicherstellen
