The accident left
Frida with a broken
spinal column, a
broken collarbone,
broken ribs, abroken pelvis, and
11 fractures in her
right leg. Also, her
right foot was
dislocated and
crushed, and her
shoulder was out of
joint. Frida spent a
month lying on her
back. She was
encased in a
plaster cast and
enclosed in aboxlike structure.
She began painting
to pass the time
while healing in
bed. It became her
lifelong passion.

Frida Kahlo may have felt alone, but through herpaintings, she has connected with many others. Inpainting the subject she knows best, she depicts herown personal pain, fear, anguish, loss - and even
joy. The rest of us marvel at how she can depict ourheartbreak, oursadness, ourloneliness. It's as if the
physical pain that frida was forced to endure gaveher the means to depict her feelings so honestly oncanvas.

Frida is often classified as a
Surrealist, however, she had
no special explanations for her
methods. She said only:
I put on the canvas
whatever comes into my
mind.

The marriage of DiegoRivera and Frida Kahlo isone of the most famousalliances between artists. It is a well-known fact thatthey had a passionate andstormy relationship, filledwith great love and alsobetrayals.
They both had incredibletalents and vision, butDiego's work would bemore public and
monumental, whereasFrida's was more personaland intimate in scale.

A self-portrait is a
painting by an artist ofhim or her self. The
painting tells us
something about whothe artist is. It gives usclues about what is
important to the artist.
We can guess what theartist loves by what is in
the painting.

The Legend of her Cremation
Legend has it when mourners gathered
to watch Fridas cremation, a
sudden blast of heat from the open
incinerator doors blew her body
bolt upright. Her hair was on fire
from the flames, and blazed around
her head like a halo. Fridas lips
appeared to break into a seductive
grin just as the doors closed shut.
Thus, she gave her audience one
last shock.

Assignment:
Paint your own self-portrait. You will be the main person-the focus- of the painting. You do not need to paintyour whole body. You can paint only your head andshoulders. You might want to paint a profile of yourself.
A profile is a side view. You may just want to usesymbols and objects to represent who you are.
Let your painting dry completely. Add bits of collageitems to your self-portrait. Add things that are importantto you. Include things that you love. Use photos, pictures cut from magazines, letters, or schoolwork. Youwill have other ideas of things to use. Stick them onwith white glue.
