Supporting You to Reach Your Potential
College life is likely to be different to what youhave been used to, but we are here to supportyou every step of the way.
You will have plenty of support when you firstarrive to help you settle in and begin your studies:
Students have an induction and fresher’s fair on their first day to help you meet other students and to find your way around College.
Every student is assigned a personal tutor who meets them for a weekly tutorial session and who is there to help at all times. Your personal tutor supports your attendance and punctuality, your personal and social development and assists with your application to University and work.
Expert advice is available as and when you need it from a Youth Worker, Chaplain, Counsellor, Nurse to a Careers Advisor.
Additional Support
The Additional Support Service works withstudents with additional learning needs toensure that everyone has the opportunityto fulfil their potential.
An Additional Learning Plan is agreed tohelp you achieve your College goals.Appropriate specialist equipment is providedto support your studies if required. Regulartutorials are arranged and help is availablefrom our base rooms.
The College has a Disability Statementcontaining more detailed information whichis updated annually and can be found on theCollege website.
Essential Skills
The Essential Skills Team is available tosupport the Maths, English and ICTunderpinning skills within programmes ofstudy.
All students are assessed so that supportcan be offered to help you succeed on yourchosen course; this includes skills workshopsand on-line learning resources availablethrough the Essential Skills Moodle site.

Open Access
Coleg Cambria challenges discrimination in all its forms. We wish to ensure that all those who are part of the College, and others, are treated fairly.
Financial Support
Advice on money matters comes from ourStudent Services Team who can helpstudents to apply for the following meanstested funds:
The Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) Wales is for full-time students aged 16 to 18 years who live in Wales. Eligible students receive allowances of £30 per week.
The Assembly Learning Grant (ALG) is for students aged 19 and over on full-time or part-time courses over 275 hours per year and who live in Wales.
The Student Support Fund (SSF) is for full-time and part-time students aged 16 or over, for assistance with costs of study, such as childcare and equipment. Apply via Student Services.
Transport to College
We provide a network of buses to help full-time students travel to and from ourDeeside, Northop, Llysfasi and Yale GrovePark sites.
For most students this transport will beprovided free of charge. Contact StudentServices for further details on 0300 3030 007.
Childcare Facilities
Our fully equipped nurseries at ColegCambria - Deeside and Coleg Cambria –Yale, Grove Park offer places for childrenfrom birth to 5 years old.
A caring and dedicated team of qualified andexperienced nursery nurses create a loving andhomely environment for the children.
Each area within the nursery has a curriculumto follow, which includes personal and socialdevelopment, language and literacy,mathematics, physical and creativedevelopment.
Opening hours are 8.00am - 5.45pm(Deeside) or 8.45am – 4.15pm (Yale GrovePark) all year round, closing for a week atChristmas and for statutory Bank Holidays.

Note to Parents
Our relationship with students includes you,as their parent or guardian and we willregularly communicate with you vianewsletters, reports and consultationevenings to keep you informed of your sonor daughter’s progress.
This includes feedback about their behaviour,homework and exam assessments andcomments from their personal tutor.
As well as receiving a written report, parentswill have the opportunity to attend a Parents’Evening where they can meet their son ordaughter’s personal tutor.
Attendance and punctuality form part of thedisciplined and positive behaviour (Code ofConduct) we expect of all College members.We have a disciplinary process designed toensure that the College environment isfriendly, safe, civilised and focussed onsuccess. We take a zero tolerance approach

Sport, Recreation and Health
All students can take part in sports and outdoorpursuits and follow a healthy lifestyle!
There are recreational sports such as fitnesstraining, badminton, basketball, five-a-side football,netball, dodgeball and table tennis.
If you enjoy the challenge of competition sports youcan compete in Welsh Colleges’ competitionsacross the nation in a variety of sports. Successfulperformers may even be chosen to represent Walesat the British Colleges Sport National Finals likeprevious students.
To help students look after their health there ishealth advice available and healthy eating optionsare available at all of our eateries. We also operatea no smoking policy in all of our buildings – thereare designated areas on all sites.
Lifestyle Fitness
Based at Coleg Cambria Deeside, LifestyleFitness caters for all fitness levels and agegroups, with professionally qualifiedinstructors available to provide personalroutines to help you reach your fitnessgoals.
Lifestyle Fitness users are also able to useinnovative audio visual entertainmentsystems while they exercise; listening tomusic and watching TV on their ownpersonal screens.
There are over 100 machines to choosefrom, with dance and aerobics/Healthy Heartstudios to offer members a wide choice ofexercise routines.

As a learner at Coleg Cambria you will have access to campus wide Wi-Fi and a wealth of equipment and resources that enable you to connect, learn and collaborate online.
The College has over 3000 computers, 2000 Chromebooks and hundreds of tablets that can be used on site. There are banks of computers that learners can use in theLearning Zones. Learners are encouraged to connect their own devices to the College Wi-Finetwork to assist with their learning. Classes use the latest interactive technologies includinginteractive multimedia presentations, Apps, social networking sites, virtual reality, interactiveassessment, podcasts, vodcasts and video capture and analysis.
All learners have a Coleg Cambria Google account which provides 30GB ofstorage space and access to tools to create online documents,presentations and spreadsheets.
Ateb, the learner portal, can be used from any computer or mobile deviceconnected to the Internet. It has both a Welsh and English interface and helps learners keeptrack of what they need to do for their College work. Ateb provides access to learners’ e-mail,online storage space, timetable, assignment dates, College notices, online applications and theirelectronic Individual Learning Plan (eILP). The eILP works on computers and smartphones, ithelps learners to keep track of what they need to do to improve their learning. Learners canaccess lecture notes, presentations, videos, online assessments and quizzes, chat rooms andforums using the College’s Moodle site.

Learners at Coleg Cambria have the option tostudy part of their course in Welsh, forexample some students choose to take theirexams in Welsh and can have help with theirWelsh throughout their time at College.

The Welsh Baccalaureate
Coleg Cambria is one of the mostexperienced and successful centres inWales to provide the WelshBaccalaureate Diploma (also known asthe Welsh Bac).
The Welsh Bac is an overarchingqualification that combines qualificationslinked to your main course. It iswelcomed by employers as it gives youadditional skills, experience andconfidence. The Advanced Bac is alsowelcomed by many Universities across the UK and carries 120 UCAS points.

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to study? There are no course fees for full-time courses;
you’ll just need to pay a non-refundable £20registration fee when you enrol. This £20 gives youyour student card and IT login.
How can I get more information?

b. Attend one of our Open Events (see page 3 for dates) where you will be able see our facilities and talk to tutors.

Do I need to apply if I am already in College and want to progress to the next level of my course?
Yes. You will be informed by your tutor inNovember 2013 how you can apply for the nextlevel of your course. Progression to the next levelof any course is not automatic. It depends onsuccessful completion of your course at therequired grade. If you wish to apply for a differentsubject area, you can apply from November 2013 asnormal.
Can I appeal if I’m not accepted onto my chosen course?
If you are unsuccessful in your application, you canappeal. The appeal should be made in writing tothe Director of the subject to which you haveapplied and addressed to the site that youattended your interview at, stating the reasons foryour appeal.
It is important that you join a course that is right for you, at the right level (not too easy and not toodifficult) and in the right subject. Please see the table on page 10 to help you decide.
(Please Note: Applicants cannot appeal if they have not been offered a place due to the courses being full or it has been cancelled).

An AS Level assessment istaken after one year ofstudy. You will take aminimum of three ASsubjects. If you expect toachieve several grade A/A*grades at GCSE you shouldchoose 4 AS subjects.

A level Entry Criteria
Those who wish to study 3 AS Levels should have a minimum of 6 full course GCSE's grade C or above, one of which must be English Language.
Where GCSE Maths grade C or above is not a requirement of the individual AS Level subject, students with a D grade or lower are required to undertake GCSE Maths during their course to enable appropriate progression to higher education or employment.
There are individual requirements for all AS subjects in addition to the above criteria and many AS Level subjects require a B grade at GCSE in the subject being taken or a related subject.
If you have mostly A* and A grades atGCSE you will benefit from a bespokeprogramme that will strengthen yourapplication to the world’s leadingUniversities.

For those who are in employment apprenticeship training offers anexciting and realistic alternative to full-time study. They enableemployed people to gain qualifications in the workplace that aredirectly relevant to their career, while still earning a salary!
Offered at three different levels and in a broad range ofoccupational areas, apprenticeships are tailored to the needs of theindividual and can be completed at the right pace for them. Everyapprenticeship has an industry approved framework of study thatincludes a knowledge qualification, a competency qualification andEssential Skills Wales. Learners can also gain other qualificationssuch as BTEC and City and Guilds.
Training can take place wholly in the workplace, or through a day orblock-release scheme in which learners are given time from work tocome into College. All learners are guided through their learning byour highly competent training assessors and can access the fullfacilities of the College to help them in their learning.

A Traineeship might be for you.
Coleg Cambria has teamed up with local employers to offer aroute from school into work for 16 and 18 year olds.
Traineeships offer young people the chance to start theircareer through a combination of learning options and paidwork experience, within a career sector of their choice.
Students will receive a training allowance so will be earningwhilst they get their qualifications and a Traineeship may leadonto an Apprenticeship, Employment or into FurtherEducation.
There are numerous different vocational areas that are onoffer and there are also real work experience placementsavailable with local employers.
Work Placements offer paid work experience of up to oneyear, which enhances employment prospects.
