flexion ernst nahm. Vernant verbindet in seinen Arbeiten
ismus.
Jean-Pierre Vernant (1914-2007) changed the face of
scholarship on Ancient Greece. His work has exerted a
lasting influence on the field from the 1970s onwards, not
least of all due to his treatment of myth as an important
reservoir of anthropological thought. Vernant brought to-
gether different scholarly traditions and methods: histori-
cal psychology, as represented in the works of Ignace
Meyerson; the social and legal history of antiquity, with
which Vernant became familiar primarily through his
teacher, Louis Gernet; and structural anthropology, adapt-
ed from the works of Claude Lévi-Strauss. An enduring
interest in the tensions created by diametrically opposed
cultural forces characterises his work, as is reflected in
the titles of his best-known books: Myth and Society, Myth
and Thought, Myth and Tragedy. Vernant and his school
apply a historical-anthropological approach to such topics
as ‘figures of the other’, including death and madness, the
representation of the divine in cult images and artwork, as
well as the social dimensions of polytheism.
