Growing up, one my favorite pastimes was spending time in the kitchen with Mom.
Spices were stacked deep into the cabinet you had to climb onto the counter and dig
around inside to finally find what you were looking for. The pullout oversized cutting board
under the countertop was perfect for mixing up a pie crust and the multi-tiered lazy susan
in the corner held every ingredient you needed. Kitchens of the 60s and 70s had features
great for that time, but who could imagine what was in store for us down the road.
Todays kitchens make preparing that meal even easier. Inside this issue well take a
look at 4 fabulous kitchens all show a great use of space, unique features, design and
color guaranteed to make us want to spend time in them creating that yummy dish.
And who can do without that shiny set of pots and pans, a blender with dozens of
features and a coffee pot that brews one cup to multiple cups, depending on how late
we stayed up the night before. Our gadget collection has grown and with it the pantry has
changed to accommodate it. From the canned goods pantry to the complete butlers
pantry, they are designed to fit your home and style. Take a peek at the ones that caught
our eye on pages 36-43, theres even one that has an electronic doggie door in it we
cant forget about Patches!
All this kitchen talk has made me hungry Im headed there now.
Hmmm... frittata or baked chicken?
ABOVE... A cherry island lends pop to this El Doradomodel home kitchen, built by Rodrock Homes.
This kitchen, along with three others, can be foundin Wyngate development, off 159th between

The New Year seems to spark many new beginnings, and for homeownersthose new beginnings often include kitchen home improvements. Veryfew people move into a home that has a kitchen perfectly suited to theirtastes and an even larger number find that they have outgrown a stylethat they loved years ago. Mike Holm of Holm Painting and Design inKansas City explains to Kansas City Homes & Style how a kitchentransformation can be easier than you think.

HOLM: The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in any
home because we spend a lot of time there, and because the look
of the kitchen has so much to do with our home value. Naturally,
at some point we become concerned with updating the look.
While replacing or refacing cabinets are options, you can have the
current cabinets painted or stained for a completely updated look
without the expense, time, or hassle.
KCHS: !!! !!!
HOLM: Many people have what they refer to as ugly oak, for
example. The homeowner may love the quality of the cabinets but
has grown tired of the oak look. There is a special two-step glazing
technique that can deepen the color and enhance the beautifully
unique characteristics of the wood, without the long process most
people would expect.
KCHS: ! !!! ! !! ! !! !! !!! !!!! ! !!!
HOLM:With this glazing process, the finest quality glaze is applied
over the existing finish then sealed permanently to the existing
finish. The result is an incredibly durable and beautiful finish that
will last for years to come.
KCHS:! ! !!! !! !! !! !!!! !!! ! ! !HOLM: Painting is always a great option, but simply putting on a
coat of paint likely will not provide that dramatic change most
people are looking for. One technique that will provide a completely
custom look is painting the cabinets with a quality finish and
them adding accent by glazing them. The result is quite artful and
completely unique to the home.

Lighting is more than just practical; it is powerful and transformative.
That is especially true when it comes to kitchen cabinet lighting.
Perhaps one of the most underappreciated design
aspects, cabinet lighting has the power to enhance
or detract from all other design elements
in your kitchen, according to
Terri Mott, lighting expert
at Rensen House
of Lights.
The Tool for Unrivaled Imagination
You can have the highest quality cabinets and counter surfaces,
but they will never be shown to their fullest without a successful
lighting scheme supporting the design. Even more concerning, the
wrong lighting can actually detract from their beauty, Mott shared.
Lighting should be considered early as possible in your design,
weighing the components of your design such as the style of the
room, placement, colors, and functionality.
There are three basic types of lighting for cabinets, Xenon,
Florescent, and LED. Each kind of lighting comes in several
forms, such as tape, bar, and puck lights. Each has particular uses
in design, both in enhancing design and how they are practically
applied.
Light is beautifully complex and depending on the kind and
source of its output, has a different color hue as well as the amount
of lumens or light output.
For example, incandescent lights emit a warmer light which can
be perfect for highlighting many types of cabinet designs and
warm color schemes. LED lights emit a white blue light which can
be perfect for complementing a contemporary design.
Both under and over cabinet lighting play an important role in
kitchen design. Under-cabinet lighting delivers light to task areas,
reduces shadowing, and can highlight backsplash design. Over
cabinet lighting brightens a space, adds visual interest, and can make
the room bigger and ceilings higher. Toe-kick lighting is a wonderful
safety feature that also adds drama and highlights flooring.
Deciding how the light will be delivered is also important.
Puck lighting delivers lights in pools and is typically used in glass
cabinets to highlight the beauty of the glass. Tape lighting delivers
a uniform line of light and is beautiful in over-cabinet applications.
The kitchen is a beautiful canvas that needs a mixture of lighting
to highlight the exceptional features and unique character of the
space. Lighting is the final element that ultimately tells a story of
warmth, drama, intensity, and life.

Colored lighting can add that certain ambiance to the kitchen, creating a
warm glow during the evening making it a nice alternative to the brighter lights.
Complement the existing kitchen colors or add a pop of color to create a wow factor.

S P E C I A L I Z I N G I N K I T C H E N A N D B A T H D E S I G N
Whether it is because of a cultural trend celebrating the artistry of home cooking,
or a design trend redefining traditional, kitchens have come of age and today
provide customer-centric options that merge design and use flawlessly.
According to Lloyd Doolittle of Doolittle Distributing Inc., homeowners, contractors,
architects and designers are finally free to truly customize kitchens based on use
but centered on beauty.
Like most everything, kitchen design is evolutionary. Kitchens, in general, are
larger. Home cooks also have many affordable cooking options to choose from...
gas, electric and magnetic induction burners, griddles, indoor gas grills, French
tops, gas or electric convection ovens, microwaves, warming drawers, infrared
broilers, salamanders, steamers, steam ovens, fryers and many more. All these
choices make the basic concept of the kitchen triangle between the stove, sink
and refrigerator obsolete. Multiple work areas are the norm in modern kitchens,
Doolittle explained.
Since kitchens have become a more integrated focal point in design and use,
the demand for efficient space saving options has increased. One of the ways
the industry is meeting this demand is through modular refrigeration or multiple
undercounter refrigeration stations that place what you need, where you need it.
Undercounter refrigeration stations feature highly customizable temperature
settings and allow each unit to be specifically tasked to meet a specific need.
They can be set to store meat and cheeses, produce, dry goods and even root
vegetables, all at the ideal temperature, maximizing preservation. Fresh fruits and
vegetables can now be stored near the prep sink and dry goods near the oven.
Red, white and sparkling wine can be stored near the dining room at the ideal
temperature...same with beer, soda and water. A quick chill feature rapidly cools
food and beverages to a desired setting.
Modular refrigeration systems allow home cooks to fully utilize their space;
placing the products they need in the spaces in which they are prepared. We fully
expect to see this seamless design option become increasingly popular as more
residents want what was once traditionally considered a commercial application.

No SeasoningRequiredStory by Ann E. ButenasThe right mix of ingredients makesthese 4 kitchens the focal point of the home.
What does an Interior Designer do when the homeowners have
uniquely individual tastes in home dcor yet together desire to
update their kitchen in a way that appeals to both of them?
This condominium in Townsend Place, a luxury high-rise with
the Country Club Plaza as its enviable address, boasts a kitchen
that shows how two distinct yet complementary tastes of its
homeowners can create not only a welcoming ambiance but also
a stunning masterpiece by design.
Kitchen Designer Genevieve Hamel of Kitchens by Kleweno
said, It was a pleasure to play with both personalities. We stuck
with a simple and timeless look while adding elements of pizzazz
to bring in a more colorful side.
The clean, white cabinetry provides a quiet yet stunning balance
to the refinished hardwood floors, from which its diagonal layout
offers an effortless and seamless flow into the living area of the
condo while also offering a spacious appeal.
The island was recreated to give it not only a strong presence
but also much more functionality. It boasts a paper counter top by
Richlite, blending two different colors while enjoying a unique yin
and yang shape. In the center of the island stands an artful metal
post, which is truly its focal point.

This post is designed to hold glasses, hand towels or lights,
explained Hamel.
The multi-tasking sink will make one take a second look, too,
with its walnut butcher-block piece that transitions to a cheese
board or cutting board when its time to entertain. This, along with
two other sections, easily slides across the top and can also be
removed or flipped over for handy storage space while preparing
food at the counter.
Contiguous to the sink is the glass counter top made by
UroGlass, which is accented by specks of color underneath,
known as graffiti.
And the piece de resistance may very well be the pewter-glazed,
glass floating cabinets.
Glass is on both sides of this cabinet which allow you to see
through it, noted Hamel, also referencing the handmade ironwork
and warm lighting both underneath and inside the cabinet,
courtesy of invisible wiring.
After it was completed and installed, the homeowners were
treated with a wonderful surprise: the beauty of the Plaza lights
reflect magnificently in the glass.
It is truly a work of art, expressed Hamel.
Adjacent to the banquette is a nook that had previously been a
bar, so this was updated with the placement of tile stone, accented
with a large mirror.
We used the same tile stone on the fireplace and we put in an
entertainment area while also restoring the front of the fireplace,
Bev added.
The kitchen cabinets give the sense of poetry in motion in that
two complementary colors were used to provide a soft and inviting
appeal. The perimeter cabinets are painted alabaster with a hand-
streaked glaze, which softens their appeal, and the washed
wood toned color on the island and entertainment cabinets add a
nice finishing touch. The island also houses a built in oven and
microwave drawer.
Beautiful granite countertops abound throughout the kitchen
and an eye-catching display of crushed glass and stainless steel
strikes a unique pose above the cooktop. The oil-rubbed bronze
faucet by the oversized sink adds yet another highlight to the
overall appeal of the kitchen.
Recessed cans and pendant lighting provide the perfect
ambiance and set the mood for when its time to enjoy a
refreshing beverage form the built-in wine cabinet or a quick
snack from the built-in refrigerator with panels. Doors that lead in
to the walk-in pantry are contiguous to the wine refrigerator.
This project gave Bev a chance to indulge her passion for
working with monochromatic, tone-on-tone colors.
You can play with any color you want to change the look
periodically, such as throwing in a new colorful area rug, she
smiled. This is a great place to entertain or just gather as a family.

When Bev Gilbert, owner and president of Regarding Kitchens, has
the task of designing and building a whole new kitchen, just step
out of her way and let the magic begin.
A little over a year ago, Bev was asked to bring new life to a
tired kitchen in an elegant home in the Leawood subdivision of
Hallbrook. The owners of the home had recently purchased it and
wanted the outdated kitchen to assume a new look that would pair
well with the rest of the house.
The house is extremely well built, noted Bev. But the kitchen
was very outdated and it didnt flow with the rest of the house.
This very spacious kitchen area could have been somewhat
overwhelming initially, but Bev designed a unique and functional
layout that truly makes this part of the house a popular gathering
spot for the family today.
One of the elements that truly captivates is the banquette, a
large upholstered seating area that can host up to seven people
with its L-shaped design.
This offers a tremendous amount of seating in a small, cozy
space, said Bev, who also pointed out the custom solid wood,
movable table.
On the backside of the banquette are lighted, built-in display
cabinets. This attractive fixture also creates the feeling of a hallway
that leads into the back of the house and into the garage.

Lance McCarthy, contractor and owner of ReTouch Design-Build-Renovate, always asks his clients what
their big rocks are what needs to be accomplished for a remodel to be successful. For Bill and
Suzanne Raney's kitchen remodel, it was: a pantry, an island, and an eating space that worked well in
the flow of the room. McCarthy was able to accomplish all three wish-list items in this Valentine area home
by taking what was originally two rooms down to the studs and redesigning the area. The owners lived
in the home during the entire renovation, except for the few days the hardwood floors were being
refinished, by setting up a temporary kitchen nearby.
The Raneys feel the kitchen is the heart of the house, so they wanted it modern and livable. But the
kitchen needed to fit in with other elements of their 100 year old home, which are very traditional. They
wanted it to be connected, but still current. So we chose warmer natural colors than a typical modern
house to blend, said McCarthy.
The anchored modern space boasts tall cabinets and straight lines, mixed with a modern glass tile
backsplash. A full bank of white cabinetry along one wall serves as pantry storage and keeps the space
bright, as well as the white countertops and the large farmhouse-style apron sink the client requested.
During the renovation while tearing out the soffits, we discovered quite a bit of available depth. We added
transom cabinets to the ceiling above the other cabinets, which allowed us to hide the ductwork in this
space and keep the clean modern feel, he noted.
There really was not space for a large island, but we were able to create a narrower custom island and
incorporated storage for books on the endcaps. Its an important piece in the kitchen and we wanted it
to stand out, so we chose a darker wood on the island to offset it from the cabinetry, he said.
The modern stainless steel appliances are faced with the same cabinetry for a sleek visual line. An
L-shaped banquette with a round table transforms the space into an eat-in kitchen with plenty of room
for the family to gather, yet allows easy access to the back door. They chose to go bold with pops of color

Kitchens today serve multiple roles, said McCarthy. They have to have functionality, not only for
cooking, but seating, possibly a television area, and hidden charging stations are popular right now. They
really are the hub of activity in a home.

Additionally a long wooden beam in the ceiling that used to run
across the original opening to the kitchen was raised up above the
ceiling line and a flushed ceiling is now in effect, eliminating the
former small doorway into the kitchen and allowing for a fully
visible area between the kitchen and main living area.
With the old pantry removed, the newly opened space allowed
for the custom island, which was designed with a built in cooktop
and offers ample space for eating and socializing.
New hardwood floors replaced old tile, allowing for a smooth
transition into the family room.
New stainless steel appliances set the tone for a kitchen in
motion and offer a great contrast to the white cabinetry. The
countertops have a marble appearance but are Vermont White
granite. This marries perfectly with the hardwood floors and the
espresso-colored bar stools that sit on two sides of the island.
The colonial-style blue wall color blends all elements of the homes
architecture together, perceived Tantillo.
We live at the island, smiled Kim, a former principle ballerina
with the Kansas City Ballet, who is very excited about the increased
storage space in the cabinets. This whole kitchen is so versatile
now and we are really pleased with the results.

When Mark and Kim Giroux set out to give a complete facelift to
the kitchen in their charming 1950s Roeland Park home, they knew
their work was cut out for them, but they also had a clear vision in
mind in order to bring this 1970s style kitchen into the 21st century.
In order to maximize the smaller space of the kitchen, Mark, a
contractor, wasted no time rolling up his sleeves to bring that vision
to life. Teaming up with Rick McDermott and Matt Lero of RDM
Architecture and along with Esther Tantillo of Classic Kitchens
Design Studio, Mark was able to rely on their expertise and talent
to maximize this space to its fullest potential.
The project essentially began with a complete demolition of the
kitchen area.
There was a wall inside the kitchen which we took out in order
to open up the space, noted Mark. We essentially restructured
the whole area. There was even a little pantry room on the east
side that was not very functional, so we took that wall out and
expanded the kitchen.
Adds McDermott, We basically modernized this kitchen.
McDermott explained that they removed a window in the pantry
and placed it further north along the east wall in conjunction with
the sink.

Pantries are not just for canned good storage
anymore. As more and more people are choosing
to stay in their homes and update them to the way
we live today, kitchen designers are coming up with
endless ways to add style and function to pantries,
whether that space is a cabinet, a walk-in room, or a
butlers pantry.

Billie Deatherage, of Deatherage Home Designs,
worked with a client whose pantry includes a doggie door
to the outside radio controlled to the dogs collar for
unique access. What was once a hallway between the
kitchen and dining room in the 1913 Plaza area home
now functions as a butlers pantry. The space is open and
visible, so the owners wanted to include a countertop
area, which is a nice extra space for overflow items. Its a
great space for bulk storage of everything from dog food
to vegetable storage, plus infrequently used items like
slow cookers and mixers.
Deatherage said a pantry can be anything from a
closet to a separate room with a mix of open shelving and
closed drawers. In todays electronic world, she has had
requests for the pantry to be a hub for alarms, sound
systems and charging stations. Things to take into PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

consideration when thinking about what to include in a

strictly for storage or if it will be visible to guests, and
keeping the space in scale with the home, she noted.

incorporated a chalk board into the pantry door in
a recent south Overland Park kitchen remodel. The
look is a continuation of the cabinetry, not immediately
recognizable as a door, with the top half being the
chalkboard.
The chalkboard adds personality, its an interactive
way for the family to communicate. They keep schedules,
grocery lists, and appointments, said Lynch. This kitchen

the new walk-in pantry space. A carpenter custom built

Pantries have become very important. They can be
an extension of the kitchen work space, not necessarily
just for food storage. Were spending as much time
designing the function of the pantry as the rest of the
kitchen. A walk-in pantry commonly ends up being
a multi-use space for prep, with warming drawers,
secondary microwaves and sinks, plus open shelving
storage for small, infrequently used appliances,
she said.
Profile Cabinets Steve Nelson designed rich dark
cabinets for a Leawood clients walk-in pantry, featuring
glass fronts on the upper row for stemware storage and
display. They were a contrast to the main kitchen areas
white cabinets. The homeowner selected a brushed
stainless steel tile backsplash for a bit of drama and
incorporated a large high-end wine refrigerator and
round secondary sink, allowing the space to function
more as a beverage center for guests.
Typically a butlers pantry is a bridge between the
kitchen and dining spaces, usually more for dress than a
walk-in pantry, and often used as an entertaining bar
area with a china hutch, said Nelson.
A back porch was incorporated into pantry space in
the near whole-house remodel of a 1906 home in the
historic Roanoke neighborhood. Mary Thompson with
Architectural Craftsmen said, We gutted all the
mechanicals, and had to demolish all the way to the
studs. The room also featured vintage windows which
were updated.
Originally the space was a butlers pantry between the
kitchen and dining room. A previous owner had also
used it as a breakfast nook. Since the space is open, it
needed to be visually appealing, she said. The cabinets
are the same style as the kitchen, but they are painted to
contrast. The homeowner wanted to be able to serve
from the space, and offer guests the option to come into
the pantry, so they incorporated a wine and beverage
refrigerator and a bar sink. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

When Kathy Weiss of Dcor By Design and her
contractor husband were renovating a mid-century
modern home in south Overland Park to sell, they
wanted the kitchen to have a more modern style without
going too contemporary. They opened a wall to create
an open flow, and built in a cabinet pantry and prep area
with a small sink in the breakfast area, which overlooks
one and one-half wooded acres.
I wanted the pantry to look more like a piece of
furniture, and made it taller and wider than normal with
adjustable shelves to fit tall cereal boxes and bulky items
that are not used every day. I envisioned being able to

pull items out of the pantry and prepare them right there.
We also installed wavy glass in the lighted upper cabinet
to create a display storage area for wine glasses or
decorative china, said Weiss. The distinctive gray glass
tile backsplash really pulls in the color of the stainless

In addition to extra storage space, Weiss said one of
the most common requests from homeowners that she
hears is a desire for built-in vegetable baskets in the pantry.
With so many custom options available, a pantry can
truly become an extension of the kitchen work, storage,

Kitchen EssentialsAdd ease to your cooking with these latest innovations
While most of us crave the warmth of spring and summer all year round, our Midwest climate tends to
say otherwise. An easy way to illuminate and naturally spruce up your home during these cold months
is the addition of colorful and lush house plants.
And not only can plants serve as beautiful home dcor, they are also natural remedies for air pollution
and household toxins. Incorporating nature into your home during this frigid winter can also drastically
improve your mood, and psychological health.

BOSTON FERN
ANTHURIUM
Clifford Vaughn, the Annual and Tropical Manager at
Heartland Nursery in Kansas City, Missouri, suggests
several popular plants that will add a nice warm stability
indoors year round and add that spring feeling to
your home during these winter months.
In general, I would recommend the Anthurium,
Vaughn said. This plant will bloom pretty consistently,
and does not require much sunlight. Alabama red is
the most popular color. However, it also comes in an
orange red, pink, white, and dark burgundy.
The Anthurium resembles the peace lily, but lasts longer, and is more heart shaped.
It is perfect for improving atmosphere and adding vibrant color. Cosmetically, this plant
is perfectly designed for decorative purposes. Another highly recommended plant by
Vaughn is the Fern for its versatility and added health benefits.
The most common ferns are the Boston, and Mother Fern. However, any type of
Fern will help improve your health, Vaughn said. He also suggested the Chinese
Evergreen or Aglaonema as plants that will help remove harsh toxins, and improve the
overall air quality in your home.
The Fern and Pileas are currently two of the most popular plants in the Heartland
Nursery. Plants tend to trend, and right now small, compact plants, have been the
most popular according to Vaughn.
Vaughn strongly encourages people to incorporate nature into their homes this winter
season. Whether its simply for dcor, or improving air quality, there is no ignoring the
natural benefits that nature can provide. It brings back the idea of the outdoors,
Vaughn explained. Plants help perk people up when we are shut in by the winter cold.
The Heartland Nursery has acquired many different types of plants, and during its
peak season carries up to around 200 species. However, the nursery currently carries
around 75-100 different types of plants in its off-season.

memorable stories of the people who have passed through the stations halls during the
past 100 years. Using augmented reality in rich, interactive formats and a cutting-edge

Where the future meets the past.
VML brought the idea for the Living History virtual exhibit
to Union Station and worked with technology partners Gimbal,
a location-aware mobile engagement platform, and Kansas
City-based Moblico, an in-app marketing platform to implement
the technology.
Union Station history is foremost a story about people, said
President and CEO of Union Station, George Guastello. People
building, connecting, moving, reuniting, and celebrating ordinary
and extraordinary moments. Sharing those stories is our
responsibility and an honor of the highest order.
The reality of what VML has created to tell these important
stories in such an exciting and high-tech way is nothing short of
amazing, said Executive Vice President and COO of Union
Station, Jerry Baber. Guests will be able to step into and
interact with some of the most memorable Union Station
moments. We owe VML, Gimbal and Moblico our deepest
gratitude and cant wait for the people of Kansas City and
beyond to experience this remarkable and free Living History
exhibition.
The exhibit, which features Gimbal proximity beacons
throughout Union Station and augmented reality experiences
on mobile devices, allows the user to relive the historical
moments of Union Station featuring Harry S. Truman, Walt
Disney, Ernest Hemingway, the Kansas City Massacre
and more.
VML is proud to help celebrate Union Station as a historic
monument in Kansas City on its centennial. The Living History
experience uses creative storytelling and the latest mobile
technology, which brings the historical moments of Union
Station to life for Kansas Citians and anyone visiting, said
VML CEO and President, Jon Cook. We wanted to tell some
of the lesser-known stories of Union Stations history, and using
location-based technology and augmented reality,
visitors can experience these
stories in the exact place they
happened. Its truly a magical
experience.

If you are in the market to update your home with a new kitchen, bathroom
or basement remodel, dont expect the experts at Heartland Kitchen & Bath
to sell you anything. Thats simply not their style. In fact, they might even
suggest you get a few other estimates before you make what will most likely
be one of the most significant decisions with respect to your home.
We are not a high-pressure sales organization, emphasized Barry
Hansel, co-owner who, along with business partner Nick Chrissan, brings
over 50 years of combined experience to the table of high quality remodeling.
No matter what the size of the job, Heartland Kitchen & Bath has set the
standard in professional skill, experience and efficiency.
So, if this leading Kansas City remodeling business doesnt want to sell
you anything, what can it offer?
What we consistently provide to our customers is unparalleled quality
and service, noted Hansel. We want to educate our customers in their
decision process while at the same time remain good stewards of the
industry. We understand that the biggest stress is making the decision to
start a remodeling project. Once that decision is made, we just want you
to sit back, relax and let us do the work. Of course, you have to at least
shop with us!
Pairing Old-School Values, Quality and Integritywith the Best in Craftsmanship, Style and Service
Story by Ann E. Butenas | Photos by Matt Kocourek
To that end, Heartland Kitchen & Bath has a cornucopia of resources in
terms of designers and showrooms and places full trust in all of its design
partners. Fully licensed with a Class B contractors license and Master
Plumbers license and insured, Heartland Kitchen & Bath is a NARI member
and EPA-certified lead-safe renovator. Hansel certainly knows his craft of
project management and also has 12 years of finish carpentry work to his
credit. Chrissan is an experienced master plumber, framer, painter and sheet
rock expert, who, like Hansel, does everything to perfection.
Nick is very well-versed in all aspects of remodeling projects said Hansel.
However, the sharpest tool in their bag is the commitment to open and
honest communication, which Hansel believes is a highly integral part of the
remodeling process. Communication is the biggest issue, he stated. For
every remodel project, the customer gets a Project Manager, which is either
Nick or myself, and we are there throughout the process.
Together with the best tradesmen in the industry, the Heartland Kitchen
& Bath offers the utmost in quality and integrity.
I have always been a hands-on guy and approach things from an old
school philosophy, said Hansel. We stand behind our work and treat every
project and every home as if it was our own.
S P O N S O R E D C O N T E N T
And Hansel understands that when you hire the Heartland Team, you are
essentially inviting them into your home, and that is an invitation they do not
take lightly.
These projects can take a month or several months to complete, and
throughout the process, we get to know our customers. They eventually
become our friends and quite often like family to us. You know who is at the
job every day, as we do not sub the work out, Hansel said. We personally
handle every aspect of the project.
Along with making the decision to commence that remodeling project
comes the anxiety of cost. True to his calling card of honesty and integrity,
Hansel does not waver when it comes to his character.
We are very fair and offer competitive pricing along with completion
schedules that exceed industry standards, he noted.
Because Heartland Kitchen & Bath does not have its own office or
showroom, the company appreciates lower overhead and such savings are
ultimately passed on to the customer.
As for the future of Heartland Kitchen & Bath, Hansel remains excited yet
grounded. With years of experience as a project manager, he understands
that each project is a priority, so taking the company into the coming years
requires strategic vision.
We definitely want to build the company, but we also want to do that
while personally managing every project, he stated.
So if 2015 is the year to do that long-awaited remodel project, then
consider the experts at Heartland Kitchen & Bath.
However, Hansel offered a few tips to make that decision a bit easier.
When looking for a contractor, be sure that the company is licensed and
insured. Do your research on them and feel comfortable with whom you are
letting into your home, he advised. We are confident, however, that when
you decide to go with us, you will be extremely happy.
Heartland Kitchen & Bath offers a three-year warranty on all projects and
stands behind its work. We are available 24/7, stressed Hansel. If a
customer needs something fixed or replaced at one in the morning or at two
in the afternoon, well be there.
And the proof is in the results. One local customer can truly attest to that
family-like feeling.
Having dealt with many contractors over the years, I can truly say having
Barry, Chris, and the installer in our home for two and a half weeks was
comforting. They are just like family. Barry was so helpful (in) giving me ideas
as well as his personal care in taking me to select granite, tile, tub and
fixtures. The (finished) bath is far above my expectations in skilled work,
quality products, prompt clean up and by far the best price out of the four
estimates I received. I will definitely use this company in the near future and
will be glad to refer Heartland Kitchen and Bath to all my friends and family.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Hansels job is knowing how
satisfied his customers are at the end of the day.
As another happy customer indicated, The process and experience
was excellent. We received constant feedback and updates on (the)
progress. Coming home each day was so exciting to see the next phase of
the transformation up until the last detail was finished.
We want to educate our customers in theirdecision process while at the same timeremain good stewards of the industry.

Warm, kindhearted, and keen on finding answers, Dr. Griffin is definitely the
kind of physician youd want if you are experiencing chronic illness, such as diabetes.
The management of diabetes is like a big mathematics game but is highly
affected by behaviors and food issues and emotions so we wind up being
statisticians, psychologists, and cheerleaders, whatever it takes to support people who
manage this difficult disease day to day. Dealing with chronic illness is a difficult
thing for patients and we try to make that easier and more successful not only
in terms of the disease management but the psychological state of the patient,
explained Dr. Griffin.
Endocrinologists can also be the puzzle solvers in medicine taking the deep dive

Both types of care are satisfying for me in different ways and I love having long

Throughout the last 25 years we have seen many changes in the

Digging their hands a bit deeper in the communities they
currently produce and develop is a top priority for Sallee Homes
this year. With a new phase opening and lot prices remaining low,
they are giving Parkway Estates a heavy focus. Located in Blue
Springs, Mo., Parkway Estates is already seeing drastic movement.
Featuring a stunning community pool, this neighborhood outlines
what it really means to make a house a home. Daltons Ridge,
another Sallee Homes community, is located in Lees Summit,
Mo., just minutes from Blue Springs Lake and Lake Tacomo. The
final phase of this premier neighborhood has approached.
Wooded lots nestled among trees remain available. A community
pool, protected green space and private lots, are just a few specifics
you will find in this distinguished community. Bradleys Crossing,
in Peculiar, Mo., is Sallee Homes newest and most affordable
community. Located in the Raymore-Peculiar school district, this
neighborhood offers affordability with a private setting. Like most
Sallee Home communities, they will be offering a variety of floor
plans that sit on various price points. Lastly, a new phase in Adams
Pointe Village offering treed golf course lots for those who like
views on the links. Sallee Homes builds in all counties across the
KC metro area, 20+ communities including Johnson County on
the Kansas side and up north.
Adjustments and accommodations are always on the brink for
Sallee Homes. New floor plans are appearing and familiar plans
are sometimes being modified. Buyers are coming to us well
informed and well prepared, they have done their homework and
they know what they want. I think the Sallee Homes team has
done a great job in preparing for the upcoming year. We have gone
through our best selling plans and tweaked them even more with
our buyers feedback. We have developed new plans to fit the
needs and wants of our customers. We have grown in the last year
and have ramped up our staff to be ready for the year ahead. said

Sallee Homes has managed to maintain success through great
relationships with local brokers, realtors, referrals and returning
home buyers. Our goals are set pretty high as a company. Each
year we continue to meet and exceed these goals. I dont think
this is just dumb luck. It seems like the harder our employees
work and dedicate themselves to being better, the luckier we get.
mentioned Tyler Sallee.
Everyone has a mission statement it seems. Ours is still the
same. Build the best product at the best possible price and take
care of our customers both before and after they move into their
new home. Find out why Sallee Homes has been one of Kansas
Citys leading home builders since 1989.

f youre thinking about taking out a home improvement loan, there areseveral options to consider. First and foremost, your mortgage consultantneeds to know why you want a home improvement loan. Here are some
factors to take into consideration.
How long have you been in the home? Will the improvements increase the property value? Are you making improvements to increase energy efficiency? Will improvements be made in one fell swoop, or in stages? What is the current outstanding balance on your mortgage? What is the appraised value of the home? How much will the improvements cost? What improvements will be tax deductible? Do you have other revolving debt that you would like to pay off
at the same time? Are you making improvements because you plan to sell the property?
The New Tract Home BluesBuyers of newly-built homes are often tapped out after making the initial downpayment and closing costs, including upgrades to amenities and the inevitableneed for new furniture. Shortly thereafter, they realize theyd like to makeadditional improvements to really have the home of their dreams.
If youre planning on putting down roots (pardon the pun), landscaping maybe in order. The developer may have been kind enough to make the front yard aperky green, but if the back yard is a disturbing brown color sparse with weeds, you may be entertaining the vision of a pool or deck.
The Major OverhaulIf you have built up equity in your home and are geared up for some majorrenovation, the Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) is probably your bestbet. This adjustable loan allows you to use your equity as a line of credit, so ifyou have improvements that are phased in over time you can simply write acheck when you need to pay a bill.
Its like a having a credit card with a much lower financing rate. In fact, theHELOC can be used for any reason at all even paying off that credit card

debt. In most cases, this action turns that revolving debt payment into a taxdeductible payment with a lower interest rate. The HELOC is generally a 2ndTrust Deed, unless it is used to pay off and replace the 1st Trust Deed.
A construction loan is an alternative to the HELOC for borrowers who dontwant to use or dont have equity, and this type of financing can be used forconstruction on an existing dwelling. The lender will ask a lot more questionsabout what the borrower wants to do with the money, and the home owner willneed architectural designs, permits and a licensed general contractor on board.
Construction loans are short-term loans that usually require interest-onlypayments until completion of construction, but the balance is due whenconstruction is done. Most often, that is managed up front by setting upconstruction-to-perm financing. In this scenario, the loan is automatically rolledover into permanent financing at a fixed rate when construction is complete, and a rate-lock agreement can be purchased to carry the borrower through thatperiod of construction.
Another option depending on the value of your home and local loanamount limitations is the FHA 203(k) Program. This financing is designed forthe purchase or refinance and rehabilitation of properties that meet FHA guidelines. This is worth looking into if you need to bring a property up to compliancestandards, finance eligible energy efficient improvements, or turn a single-familyowner occupied dwelling into a duplex to accommodate Mom or Dad!
Just a Facelift, Please! If you want to sell your home and you simply want to improve the curb appeal,it makes sense to go with a HELOC. Make sure you are aware of the current marketvalue of homes in your area to make sure youre not going over the limit on thefair market value of your home. Youll want to get a return on your investment!
If youve had your home on the market too long and have not been able tosell, you might want to make some changes to give it a fresh new look and bringback the passion you once had for your home. Your mortgage consultant willhelp you weigh out your options for financing based on your outstanding mortgagebalance, income and credit score.
Regardless of your reason for home improvement, make sure you share yourgoals with your mortgage consultant. He or she can walk you through the variousloan options and confer with your tax advisor to make sure youre getting thebest deal possible.

FUR FASHION IS IN FULL FORCETH IS F I ERCE WINTRY SEASON.This growing trend offers versatility, a wide color variety,
and most importantly, furnace like warmth that most
clothing simply cant compete with. Fur is bold, classic,
and elegant. By incorporating various types of fur coats
and accessories into your wardrobe these winter
months, staying warm and fashionable is now easier
than ever.
Missy Love, The President of Alaskan Fur, frequently
encourages customers to incorporate more fur into
their winter wardrobe.
Its stylish, warm, and durable. If you take proper
care of it, it can last you around 30 to 40 years, Love
said.
There are many different types of luxury furs in style
this season including mink, fox, beaver, and lynx. These
high quality furs provide unique textures, comfort, and
sophistication.
Fur is very diverse, and can be worn boldly as coats.
Or, incorporated slightly more subtle into hats, gloves,
earmuffs, and scarves. Fur accessories are simple, and
are currently all the rage this winter season.
One of our most popular sellers this year is the
knitted rex fur scarf, Love stated It is an eternity
scarf, a very fashionable accessory, and is one of our
strongest sellers.
If you are looking to extend the life of your fur,
Alaskanizing is a special service offered by Alaskan
Fur to help restore fur, and ensure its longevity.
We put the oil back into the coat, and clean them,
Love said We have a factory of finishers that can
restyle or make different things out of your coat as well.
Even if you are not a big fan of fur, leather can also
be a great alternative. It works well for both men and
woman by creating a little bit of edge and flare. Leather
also comes in a wide variety of colors, and can be fun
to experiment with.
According to Love, the most popular colors this
season for both fur and leather have been navy blue,
gray, red, burgundy, and merlot. However, Love also
mentioned that the classic colors black and brown will
never truly go out of style.
Ignite your winter wardrobe, and spice it up with
pieces of luxurious fur, fine leather, and trendy winter
accessories. Embrace the cold, and become your own
style icon this season.

This iconic Kansas City favorite may have a new address but its
treasured traditions have stayed the same, even when it comes to
Valentines Day, and that is what makes sharing dinner with your
love here your best idea yet!
Were going to have a good time this year, noted owner Jimmy
Frantze. This place lends itself to a very romantic and fun evening
and well make sure that all of our guests have a great experience.
While they may not have a specialized menu exclusively for the
occasion, guests can still count on the best in atmosphere, service
and cuisine, and Frantze gave a nod to the famous KC Strip steak
au poivre that will be served that evening, along with a fresh
selection of seafood. Additionally, Frantze suggested that the bar
would offer a special pink cocktail in honor of the holiday and each
lady will receive a nicely wrapped piece of chocolate as she leaves.
Even though there will be no live music or entertainment, the
ambiance will undoubtedly remain classy and romantic. If you want
a truly unique and memorable experience, JJs will not disappoint.

NOW THAT WERE WELL INTO THE NEW YEAR,have you kept up with your proverbial New Years resolutions
list? If you are like many people, somewhere on that list is a
commitment to getting healthier, losing a few unwanted extra
pounds, and/or starting a new exercise regimen.
If your jeans are feeling a bit snug and you are feeling a bit
sluggish, dont get down on yourself for enjoying the holidays.
The best time to get back on track is today. There is a reason why
the rearview mirror is smaller than the windshield, so appreciate
the fun you had over the holidays but give yourself the freedom to
enjoy the healthy view on the road ahead.
According to Derek Welles, owner of Fitness Together in Prairie
Village, Kansas, getting back in shape and losing that extra weight
does take dedication, but it does not have to be as overwhelming
as you might think.
Dont expect miracles overnight, he cautioned. You need to
develop a plan and stick to it. The biggest reason people fail with
their fitness goals is that they expect too much too soon.
If you find yourself unmotivated, Welles suggested finding a
buddy to work out alongside you. When you have someone to
whom you are accountable, you will be more likely to remain
accountable to yourself.
Welles also noted the importance of writing things down and
keeping a training log.
It is important to set up a specific program, whether you are
working out once a week or several times a week, he said. You
have to plan your workouts, set goals, and create new habits with
respect to those goals.
Welles also noted that food is the biggest culprit and can easily
sabotage the best of fitness intentions.
The nutrition part is so important, he emphasized. However,
dont try to drastically change or alter your diet. Make small
changes. For example, cut back on starches one month and then
eliminate soda the next month.
While exercise is an integral part of the fitness equation, Welles
indicated that it is not necessary to over-do it with the workouts.
You dont need to exercise or work out for more than an hour
each time, and that includes your warm-up, he said. And dont
focus on finding the perfect work out. The key to getting fit and
staying fit is not the work out as much as the consistency you put
into doing it, even if that just means getting out and walking the
dog every day to get started.
And if you still find yourself struggling to meet your health and
fitness goals, ask for help.
It never hurts to hire a personal trainer, smiled Welles.
