At the end of October 2011 the jury met that had been assigned to assess the 26 projects submitted by different architects’ stu-dios and firms for the design competition of a residence for re-searchers and postgraduate business students within the Sci-ence Park at the UPV/EHU in Leioa.

This competition was made possible because the UPV/EHU had been recognised barely a year before as a Campus of International Excellence with the EUSKAMPUS project, and this recognition was accompanied by the provision of a budget in order to proceed with the competition. Because a university of excellence is not just a university that carries out research, that offers top quality PhD syllabuses and defends PhD theses – over 300 a year –, a university that writes scientific articles – over 7,000 over the last five years –, licences patents – over fifty a year – and obtains funding for its research projects in competitive tenders, but is also a university that is able to offer attractive and comfortable accommodation that is close to research areas for all those individuals – MA, postgraduate and PhD students, junior and senior researchers –, for all that human intelligence that it is able to attract. It is also necessary to offer functional, modern accommodation that combines freedom and independence with common services, coexist-ence, calm and a natural environment.

The University of the Basque Country maintains three residences in the three capitals of the historic territories (Blas de Otero, in Bilbao; Manuel Agud Querol, in San Sebastián, and Tomás Al-faro Fournier, in Vitoria), together with the Miguel de Unamuno Hall of Residence, also in Bilbao. Yet the rate at which the Scien-tific Park at the UPV/EHU is growing made it necessary to take a further step and offer researchers from different institutes and consolidated groups, researchers who arrive on the Ikerbasque programme, and all students doing MA research and on PhD

A finales de Octubre del 2011 se reunía el Jurado que debía evaluar los 26 proyectos presentados por diferentes estudios y empresas de arquitectura al concurso de ideas para el diseño de una residencia para investigadores y estudiantes de post-grado en el Parque Científico de la UPV/EHU en Leioa.

Este concurso era posible porque la UPV/EHU había sido reco-nocida, apenas un año antes, como Campus de Excelencia Internacional con el proyecto EUSKAMPUS, y ese reconocimien-to iba acompañado de una dotación presupuestaria para la realización del citado concurso. Porque una Universidad de ex-celencia no es sólo una Universidad que investiga, que tiene programas de doctorado de calidad y que defiende tesis doc-torales –más de 300 anuales–, una Universidad que escribe artí-culos científicos ISI –más de 7.000 en los últimos cinco años–, li-cencia patentes –más de una cincuentena cada año– u obtie-ne financiación para sus proyectos de investigación en convo-catorias competitivas, sino es aquella Universidad que es tam-bién capaz de ofrecer un alojamiento atractivo, cómodo y cercano a los espacios de investigación, a todas esas perso-nas, estudiantes de másteres, de postgrado y doctorado, in-vestigadores juniors y seniors, a toda esa inteligencia humana que es capaz de atraer. Es necesario también ofrecer un aloja-miento funcional, moderno, que combine la libertad y la auto-nomía con unas dosis de servicios comunes, convivencia, tran-quilidad y entorno natural.

La Universidad del País Vasco tiene tres residencias en las tres capitales de los territorios históricos (Blas de Otero, en Bilbao; Manuel Agud Querol, en San Sebastián, y Tomás Alfaro Four-nier, en Vitoria) y el Colegio Mayor Miguel de Unamuno, en la capital bizkaína. Pero al calor del crecimiento del Parque Cien-tífico de la UPV/EHU era necesario avanzar un paso más y ofre-cer a los investigadores de los diferentes Institutos y grupos con-solidados, a los investigadores que llegan con el programa Iker-basque, y a todos los estudiantes de los másteres de investiga-

2011ko urriaren bukaeran bildu zen hainbat arkitektura-estudio eta -enpresak Leioako UPV/EHUren Zientzia Parkean graduon-doko ikertzaile eta ikasleentzako egoitza bat diseinatzeko ideia-lehiaketara aurkeztutako 26 proiektuak ebaluatu behar zituen epaimahaia.

Lehiaketa hori posible izan zen urte bat lehenago UPV/EHU Na-zioarteko Bikaintasun Campus gisa aitortu zutelako EUSKAMPUS proiektuari esker. Aitortzarekin batera aurrekontuko diru-horni-dura eman zioten aipaturiko lehiaketa egiteko. Bikaintasun uni-bertsitate bat ez da ikertzen duen, kalitateko doktoretza-pro-gramak dituen eta doktore-tesiak defendatzen dituen –urtean 300dik gora–, ISI zientzia-artikuluak idazten dituen –7.000tik gora azken bost urte hauetan–, patenteen lizentziak ematen dituen –berrogeita hamarretik gora urtero– edo deialdi lehiakorretan bere ikerketa-proiektuetarako finantzaketa lortzen duen uni-bertsitatea soilik. Master, graduondoko eta doktorego ikasleei, ikertzaile junior eta seniorrei, erakarri dezakeen giza adimen ho-rri guztiari ostatu erakargarria, erosoa eta ikerketa-guneetatik hurbil dagoena eskaintzeko gai den unibertsitatea ere bada. Ezinbestekoa da ostatu funtzionala eta modernoa eskaintzea ere, askatasuna eta autonomia zerbitzu komunekin, bizikidetza-rekin, lasaitasunarekin eta ingurune naturalarekin konbinatzen dituena.

Euskal Herriko Unibertsitateak hiru egoitza ditu hiru lurralde histo-rikoetako hiriburuetan (Blas de Otero, Bilbon; Manuel Agud Querol, Donostian, eta Tomás Alfaro Fournier, Gasteizen), eta Miguel de Unamuno ikasle-egoitza nagusia Bizkaiko hiriburuan. Baina UPV/EHUren Zientzia Parkearen hazkundearen babesean beste urrats bat aurrera egitea behar zen eta finkatutako insti-tutu eta taldeetako ikertzaileei, Ikerbasque programarekin iris-ten diren ikertzaileei eta ikerketa-masterretako eta doktorego-programetako ikasle guztiei ikasle-egoitza bat eskaini behar

programmes, a residence that would enable them to carry out their sole activity in a calm environment, where the residence would take care of everything else for them.

With these ideas in mind, the design competition was called for which, as has been stated previously, around thirty projects were submitted. A huge range of ideas were presented over 2 weeks at the Chillida exhibition hall at Bizkaia Aretoa, the Para-ninfo Assembly Hall at the UPV/EHU designed by Alvaro Siza to ensure that the citizens of the Basque Country would be able to see the wealth of ideas and proposals that were being submit-ted for this competition.

I should like to firstly thank the participation by architects’ studios and firms which I wish to name in alphabetical order, according to the mottos under which they submitted their work: Atxulaur, B543L11, E2 532b, Egoitza hedatua, Eguzkia atarian, eman ta za-bal zazu, Enlace metálico, Enrédate, Entreatrios, esPATIO PÚBLI-CO, Estratos de aire, Etorkizuna bidea, Etxean bezala, Green house effect, Iker lehioak, INVeztia, Leioa+192, Lifebox, Lo olvi-dé, Magic box, METRO cúbico, MINdTEGI, NIRIZ, PIEP04, Sep-tiembre and UP. This competition would have been impossible without them, and without their competence, without their em-ulation, the level would doubtless have been far lower. Their competitive participation has not brought about an arithmetic progression, but rather, an absolutely exponential one.

I should now also like to go on to thank all the members of the jury for their participation, the time they devoted to selecting the work and, ultimately, for taking the difficult decision, owing to the high level of the projects submitted. The jury consisted of:

ture and Works Departments at the UPV/EHU.– Ms. Carmen Gómez, architect at the UPV/EHU.– Ms. Lore Bilbao, Vice-manager of the Bizkaia Campus, in her

capacity as Secretary of the jury. – Mr. Carmelo Garitaonandia: Vice-rector of the Bizkaia Cam-

pus, in his capacity as Chairperson.

A yardstick was established for the purpose of comparing the different projects, whereby half the score was based on archi-tectural quality and the economic and environmental sustain-ability of the residence, and the other half on optimization of spaces, flexibility and modularity.

In accordance with these criteria, the jury decided to award the second prize of the competition to the proposal submitted by the studio run by the architect Javier Gómez Mateos, under the motto MAGIC. The jury highlighted the structural use of the

Con estas ideas se convoca el Concurso al que, como decía, se presentaron casi una treintena de proyectos. Una variedad enorme de ideas que quedaron expuestas durante 2 semanas en la sala de exposiciones Chillida del Bizkaia Aretoa, el Para-ninfo de la UPV/EHU diseñado por Alvaro Siza, para que los ciu-dadanos y las ciudadanas de Euskal-Herria vieran la riqueza de ideas y de propuestas que participaron en este concurso.

Querría agradecer, en primer lugar, la participación de estu-dios y empresas de arquitectura, que quiero citar en orden al-fabético, según los lemas con los que se presentaron: Atxulaur, B543L11, E2 532b, Egoitza hedatua, Eguzkia atarian, eman ta zabal zazu, Enlace metálico, Enrédate, Entreatrios, esPATIO PÚ-BLICO, Estratos de aire, Etorkizuna bidea, Etxean bezala, Green house effect, Iker lehioak, INVeztia, Leioa+192, Lifebox, Lo olvi-dé, Magic box, METRO cúbico, MINdTEGI, NIRIZ, PIEP04, Sep-tiembre y UP. Sin ellas este concurso hubiera sido imposible, y sin su competencia, sin su emulación, sin duda el nivel hubiera sido muy inferior. Su participación competitiva no ha permitido una progresión aritmética, sino una progresión absolutamente exponencial.

A continuación querría agradecer a todos los miembros del ju-rado, su participación, la dedicación de su tiempo a la selec-ción de las obras y, finalmente, la difícil decisión, por el nivel tan elevado de los proyectos. El jurado lo componían:

A los efectos de comparar los diferentes proyectos se estable-ció un baremo en el que la mitad de su puntuación se basaba en la calidad arquitectónica, y la sostenibilidad económica y medioambiental de la residencia, y la otra mitad, en la optimi-zación de los espacios, la flexibilidad y la modularidad.

En base a estos criterios, el jurado decidió otorgar el segundo premio del concurso a la propuesta presentada por el estudio del arquitecto Javier Gómez Mateos, bajo el lema de MAGIC. Resaltando de este proyecto la utilización estructural de la piel

zitzaien, aukera emango zietena jarduera bakarra egiteko, hau da, lasaitasunez ikertzea, gainerako gauza guztiez egoitza ar-duratuko zelako.

Asmo horiekin egin zen lehiaketarako deialdia, eta ia hogeita hamar proiektu aurkeztu ziren. Askotariko ideiak erakutsi ziren 2 astez UPV/EHUko Bizkaia Aretoa izeneko eta Alvaro Sizak disei-natutako Paraninfoko Txillida erakusketa-aretoan, Euskal Herri-ko hiritarrek ikus zezaten lehiaketan parte hartutako ideia eta proposamenen aberastasuna.

Lehenik eta behin, eskerrak eman nahi dizkiet parte hartu du-ten arkitektura-estudio eta -enpresa guztiei. Honako hauek dira, aurkeztutako gaiaren araberako ordena alfabetikoan: Atxu-laur, B543L11, E2 532b, Egoitza hedatua, Eguzkia atarian, eman ta zabal zazu, Enlace metálico, Enrédate, Entreatrios, esPATIO PÚBLICO, Estratos de aire, Etorkizuna bidea, Etxean bezala, Green house effect, Iker lehioak, INVeztia, Leioa+192, Lifebox, Lo olvidé, Magic box, METRO cúbico, MINdTEGI, NIRIZ, PIEP04, Septiembre eta UP. Haiek gabe ezinezkoa izango zen lehiaketa egitea, eta haien arteko lehiarik gabe eta haien emulaziorik gabe lehiaketak maila askoz apalagoa izango zuen, dudarik gabe. Haien parte-hartze lehiakorrak ez dio aukerarik eman progresio aritmetikoari, progresio esponentzialari baizik.

Ondoren, eskerrak eman nahi nizkieke epaimahaiko kide guz-tiei parte hartzeagatik, euren denbora lanak hautatzen ema-teagatik eta, azkenik, proiektuen maila altua kontuan hartuta, hain erabaki zaila hartzeagatik. Honako hauek osatzen zuten epaimahaia:

dea, lehendakari gisa.

Proiektuak alderatzeko baremo bat ezarri zen. Puntuazioaren erdia egoitzaren kalitate arkitektonikoan eta ekonomia- eta in-gurumen-iraunkortasunean oinarrituta zegoen eta, beste erdia, espazioen optimizazioan, malgutasunean eta modularitatean.

Irizpide horietan oinarrituta, epaimahaiak erabaki zuen Javier Gómez Mateos arkitektoaren estudioak MAGIC izenarekin aur-keztutako proposamenari ematea lehiaketako bigarren saria. Kanpoko azalaren egiturazko erabilera, egongelaren eta sukal-

The first prize was awarded to the firm Aq4 Arquitectura, under the motto METRO CUBICO. This project was noteworthy for the comb-shaped layout of the floor, the capacity for mass-pro-duction and the advantageous use taken of the module and the overall consistency of the proposal.

Now that we have an excellent residence project for research-ers and postgraduate students to build at the Science Park at the UPV/EHU in Leioa, all that remains for us to do is find an in-vestor so that we can carry out the project.

But that is the next step!

El primer premio fue concedido a la empresa Aq4 Arquitectu-ra, bajo el lema METRO CUBICO. Este proyecto destacaba por la disposición en peine de la planta, la capacidad de seriación y el aprovechamiento del módulo y la coherencia global de la propuesta.

Ahora, tenemos un excelente proyecto de residencia para in-vestigadores y estudiantes de postgrado para construir en el Parque Científico de la UPV/EHU en Leioa, sólo nos queda en-contrar un inversor, o la inversión, y el operador para llevar a cabo el proyecto de la Residencia.

Pero ese es el paso siguiente!

Orain, ikertzaile eta graduondoko ikasleentzako ikasle-egoitza-rako proiektu bikaina dugu Leioako UPV/EHUren Zientzia Par-kean eraikitzeko. Inbertitzailea edo inbertsioa eta egoitzaren proiektua gauzatzeko eragilea aurkitzea besterik ez zaigu falta.

Baina hori hurrengo urratsa izango da!
