INTRODUCTION• Like a rich green emerald,

swathed in the translucent, turquoise silk of the southwest Indian Ocean.

• Mauritius owes this remarkable landscape to the now inactive volcano, and to the coral reef, which mainly surrounds the island.

FACT BOX• Full Name:- Republic of Mauritius.• Capital City:- Port Louis.• Official Languages:- French, English.• Economy:- Tourism is one of the

driving forces of the Mauritius,the 3rd largest foreign exchange earner,after sugar and textile.

• Climate:-Mauritius has typical coastal and tropical climate, with warm and sultry summers, mild/balmy winters and light showers all year round.

• People:- Mauritius is a densely populated island.Hindus, Muslims, Creoles, Chinese and Europeans mainly live here.

HISTORY• History of Mauritius has been divided into

3 parts:-.– Dutch period (1598 - 1710).– French period (1715 - 1810).– English period (1810 -1968).

• Mauritius got its independence. on March 12th 1968.

CULTURE• Mauritius is a blend of diverse

cultures and religions which the immigrant population brought from their ancestral countries. Their festivities are celebrated in a spirit of peace and harmony throughout the year.

SEGA• Sega is an integral part of their culture.

It is an indigenous form of music and dance peculiar to Mauritius. Derived mostly from African music dating from slavery days.

• The Sega is now performed with sophisticated contemporary influences and instruments. The shuffling, hip swaying dance and Creole lyrics are an integral part of the music.

        

MAJOR CITIES• PORT-LOUIS (The

Capital City)-.Port-Louis is a real

hive where big businesses and small trades cohabit to form this lively city.

• CUREPIPE:-Curepipe stands at the lower tip of the urban zone which stretches diagonally across the island from Port-Louis. It is an elegant residential town.

• MAHEBOURG:-. Mahebourg is named after one

of the foremost figures in the history.

• GRAND BAIE :-. Grand Baie owes its popularity

to the enchanting quality of its emerald waters and to its liveliness by day or by night.

CUISINE• Mauritius is a paradise for the

senses not only for the eyes with its beautiful landscape, but also for the palate.

• Gastronomes will find a variety of flavours and aromas inherited from the different migrations through its history.

During the nineteenth century after the abolition of slavery, Indian workers who had migrated to Mauritius bought with them their exquisite cuisine.

saw the arrival of Chinese migrants,mostly from Cantonese region.

• Along the years each community has adapted and mixed each other’s cuisine to their liking,which has resulted in MAUTITIUS CUISINE.

• The eating habits of Mauritians inevitably reflect the ethnic diversity of its people: Creole rougailles,Indian curries, Muslim biryanis,Chinese sweet and sour pork, French delicate dishes and so on…..

saffron,cinnamon cardamom & cloves are the common ingredients that provide powerful and yet subtle flavor.

• Indian pancake made with dholl(split peas) typically served with various curries and achards.It is commonly sold by street hawkers all over the island.
