Am 8. Mai 1945 endete mit der Kapitulation der
Wehrmacht der Zweite Weltkrieg in Europa. Sechs
Jahre Krieg hatten Millionen Opfer gefordert und
ein bis dahin ungekanntes Ausmaß an Zerstörung
gebracht.
Neuanfang gestellt.
Das Deutsche Historische Museum präsentiert
anlässlich des 70. Jahrestags der Kapitulation die
Sonderausstellung 1945 – Niederlage. Befreiung. Neuanfang. Zwölf Länder Europas nach dem Ende der NS-Gewaltherrschaft .
The Second World War came to an end in Europe
with the surrender of the Wehrmacht on 8 May
1945. Six years of war had led to the death of
millions and destruction of previously unknown
magnitude. Warfare and occupation regimes,
mass crimes and expulsion left a lasting mark on
countries as well as populations.
The consequences of the war are still evident at
political, social and personal levels. Today’s Europe
cannot be understood without an awareness of
what happened during the war and what followed
the end of the war and the Nazi terror regime.
Countries which had been occupied by Germany
had to deal with the aftermath of years of Nazi
despotism, and societies traumatized by the war
had to find a way back to the daily routines of
peacetime. At the national as well as personal
level preparations were made for a new beginning.
To mark the occasion of the 70th anniversary of
this surrender, the Deutsches Historisches Museum
presents a temporary exhibition, 1945 — Defeat. Liberation. New Beginning. Twelve European countries after the end of Nazi tyranny.

aufzeigen.
The exhibition presents the post-war situation
in Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the
Netherlands, Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, the
Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Austria.
The various attempts to shift from war to peace
were influenced by wartime experiences. But
specific historical, social and political features as
well as international factors also determined the
nature of the post-war years in these countries.
The primary goal of the exhibition team is to point
out the very different occurrences in the indivi-
dual countries. There were indeed similarities, for
example regarding the question of how to deal
with crime and collaboration. Nevertheless, the
panorama of these post-war histories will especi-
ally point out country-specific developments.

Die parallele Darstellung der frühen Nachkriegs-
jahre in zwölf verschiedenen europäischen Staaten
ermöglicht es, die nationale Perspektive um den
Blick auf die Lebenssituation der europäischen
Nachbarn zu erweitern. Befreiung und Kriegsende
sowie die unmittelbaren Folgen für die Menschen
in diesen Ländern werden nebeneinander aufge-
zeigt – ohne Erlebtes und Erlittenes gegeneinander
abzuwägen oder zu relativieren. Dabei werden
politische und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen
beleuchtet und ein Einblick in das Alltagsleben
der Menschen, die diese Umbruchszeit erlebten,
gewährt. Exemplarisch ausgewählte Biografien
verdeutlichen die Vielschichtigkeit individuellen
Erlebens dieser Zeit.
A parallel presentation of the early post-war
years in twelve different European countries
makes it possible to widen national points of
view by considering how life had to be lived in
neighbouring European countries. Side by side,
liberation and the end of the war as well as the
immediate consequences for the inhabitants
of these countries are pointed out — without
comparing or relativizing what they experienced
and suffered. Political and social developments
are examined and an impression is conveyed of
the everyday life of those who went through
this time of upheaval. Individual biographies are
featured to illustrate the complexity of what
happened during this time.

Zentrale Fragen der Ausstellung werden sein: In
welchem Zustand befanden sich Gesellschaft und
politisches System am Ende des Krieges? Welche
welchen Herausforderungen standen die Men-
schen angesichts von Kriegstraumata, Verlusten,
erlebter Unterdrückung und Zerstörung, Leid,
innerer Zerrissenheit und/oder Täter-/Mittäter-
schaft? Die Erzählung konzentriert sich auf die
unmittelbare Nachkriegszeit bis zu einer ersten
gesellschaftlichen und politischen Konsolidie-
rung im jeweiligen Land.
The exhibition focuses on the following questions:
What was the state of affairs as to society and
the political system at the end of the war? What
political disruptions were prompted by the ending
of the war? What were the effects on individuals
of Nazi rule, the war and occupation? What chal-
lenges did people face in light of war trauma, loss,
endured suppression and destruction, suffering,
inner conflict, and being a perpetrator or a victim?
The narrative concentrates on the immediate
post-war period up to the inception of social and
political consolidation in each country.
