This is my final President’s Message for the 2017-2018 Term and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Club
members for their unwavering and continuous support. I
would also like to acknowledge the hard work and diligence
of our Club’s employees. Although there is definitely room for improvement from some, our Club, as a responsible
employer, is committed to support, assist and retain those
who are competent, true and loyal to our Club, by providing
them with the opportunity to learn and grow their career
with us. I would also like to recognise the passion and effort
from my Main Committee members, and thank them for
their hard work and selfless contribution for the betterment of our Club.
I regret to report that we faced a slight glitch to our rock
revetment project. Briefly, on 5th April 2018, the Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah, acting upon a complaint received, issued
a stop work order to our rock revetment project, on the
grounds that our Club has encroached on the foreshore of
State Land without permission. In a nutshell, after meeting
with and explaining our position to the Pejabat Daerah dan
Tanah, it was discovered that the root cause was an internal
“miscommunication” between the relevant authorities,
namely the Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran, which granted us
the necessary required Approval on 24th November 2017,
and the Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah, which was not notified of the same. I am pleased that the matter has now been
satisfactorily resolved, and we received a letter dated 17th
April 2018 from the Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah informing us
that they have no objection to our Club resuming our rock
revetment works in accordance with the aforesaid Approval
issued on 24th November 2017. Lim Shin LidPresident
Our Club covers a large area and we have embarked on a
strategy to identify key specific zones, with an emphasis on our F&B outlets and their surroundings, where we
can make a swift and positive impact by renovating and
upgrading the venues at relatively nominal cost. Besides
improving the aesthetics, our team is committed to improve
the cleanliness, service and also the choices of food and
drinks available to better suit the venues. I must commend
our team, who have just completed the upgrading and
renovation of the Sea Front Café, for a job well done. With
this newfound confidence and renewed vigour, I hope our team is up for more challenges to improve and upgrade our
other outlets. On another note, we have also just completed
the repair works on our boat ramp, which hopefully will
resolve the long outstanding issue of safety when launching
and returning our boats.
We shall soon be celebrating our Club’s 115th anniversary,
and I hope to see all of you at our Members’ Night
scheduled on 1st June 2018 at the MPH. We shall also be
having our Annual General Meeting on 24th June 2018,
which I encourage members to attend, as we all have a
stake and interest in this beloved Club of ours.
I also take this opportunity to wish our Muslim members and
friends a Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!
PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE
I would like to take this opportunity to thank allClub members and employees for their unwavering and continuous support.

EDITOR'SNOTE
The Nautilus is a platform for members to share and exchange thoughts and experiences with each other.
“
“
On behalf of the Editorial Board, we wish all our Muslim
members and friends
Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri. We are coming to the end of term 2017/18. This is the last
issue of Nautilus for this term, and I wish to thank members
of the Editorial Board, writers from the Sections and Groups,
the staff, the Publisher and many others, for their diligence
and dedication. It has been a great experience working
together with everyone in the bi-monthly production of the
Magazine. Thank You.
The Magazine serves many purposes, for a start, it is the
face and voice of the Club. It keeps members informed of
the major events and happenings; gives a voice to members;
a platform for members to share and exchange our thoughts
and experiences with each other.
During the year, the Club had undertaken a number of
projects with the aim to protect or improve the values of
the Club’s assets. The Club’s Swimming Pool is one of the
oldest structure in our Club’s establishment and among
few in the country with sea water. During the year, we have
replaced the pump/assembly so as to maintain our sea water
composition. This may sound simple, until we learn that the
old pump/assembly is of such old design that no supplier
could furnish any spare parts! The Pool itself is sited adjacent to the sea, and is subjected to the forces of the waves and
weather. Therein the Rock Revetment and Wooden Deck
project was initiated to address serious corrosion and
potential structural failure. The project on completion will
protect the shore line fronting the Pool from the strong
waves directly impacting the Pool. Next, we are pleased to
report the repair and rectification of the Ramp at the Boat Yard. This will greatly improve the process, and safety of
launching boats from the Yard; and bring to a close a long
outstanding issue. There are obviously more happenings in
the Club that I would dearly like to report, but is beyond the
space of this message could cover.
Finally, but not the least, I wish to acknowledge the diligence,
and dedication of many of our staff. The Management Team
is taking shape and taking charge to better serve the Club
and members.

GM’SMESSAGE
On behalf of the Main Committee, I would like to let you
know about an upgrade project done with the intention of
increasing the enjoyment of you and your family members.
Several “facelift” projects are currently being considered for
the F & B restaurant(s) and bar(s). The first of these, due for imminent completion, is the Seafront Café, the renovation of
which, management believe, will turn this into a comfortable
and atmospheric members lounge area.
We believe that bars, managed with skill and efficiency, backed up with periodic transformation, can thrive and play
a major role at the heart of club communities, and be a key
component in creating interaction between members.
Although I have only been in position as GM of Penang
Swimming Club for several weeks, my increasing knowledge
of the Club staff and management, leads me to believe that
each individual employee at Penang Swimming Club brings a
different skill set “to the table”, but combined, they are one
voice working to provide ever improving member service,
with the eventual aim being, what can best be described as,
total “customer” satisfaction.
Total Customer Satisfaction is only possible when one
delivers what is expected.
Penang Swimming Club employs over 90 people, many of
whom have as much as 10 years experience within the Club.
That is a lot of combined experience and knowledge to draw
upon. Therefore, I say to members, never hesitate to make
enquiries or ask for assistance regarding Club matters. We
are here to serve you and we will do our utmost to provide
the information or assistance you require.
As members, it is your right to expect excellence from us,
and the goal for management and staff is, and always must
be, to meet, or even exceed, those expectations.
I also take this opportunity to wish our Muslim members
and friends a Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!
A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us.We are dependent on him.He is not interruption in our work.He is the purpose of it.We are not doing a favour him by serving him.He is doing us a favour by givingus an opportunity to do so.

The Club had engaged the services of a Consulting Engineer
in 2017 to carry out a conditional structural assessment of
the swimming pool deck. The assessment indicates that
the structural integrity of the pool deck structure had been
severely compromised by impact of continued wave action,
acting on the reinforced concrete frame structure beneath.
The assessment indicates that the RC beams have large
cracks (spalled concrete) and the steel reinforcement bars
are severely corroded.
The lack of shore protection has also resulted in direct
impact of wave energy onto the pool deck structure. The
damage to the pool deck is more pronounced at the areas
where there is very minimal rock revetment (the structure
towards the Club House, away from the Snake Temple)
The Consultant's proposal was to re-construct the concrete
frame beneath the pool deck to ensure long term structural
integrity. Shore protection in the form of large rock
revetments will also be introduced to protect the pool
deck from direct wave impact. A new composite timber
deck will be installed upon completion of the remedial
works to the structure.
Construction works on the rock revetment and pool deck
commenced in March 2018.

SWIMMING POOL DECK & ROCK REVETMENT PROTECTION
The Boat Ramp is our main launching site for boats at the
Boat Yard. It has been in state of disrepair for some time.
We are happy this is all behind us now.
The Maintenance Committee 2017/2018 is glad to report
that the long outstanding problem of the broken boat ramp
has been resolved! The broken and disjointed concrete slabs that make out the whole boat ramp can be seen just floating dangerously before the repair while our members and
workers continue to use it in a risky manner when boats are
being launched to sea and back.
The appointed contractor completed the job in approximately
5 weeks. The broken concrete slabs were hacked and
discarded and 30 points of 6” x 6” concrete piles were
placed. Due to the tide condition and water level, sheet
piles were brought in temporarily by the contractor to
shield off the water while work is being carried out.
The Maintenance Committee is very happy with the final result of the boat ramp and wishes to take this opportunity to
thank fellow members who advised and shared their opinion
with us during the work duration especially those from the
Sailing and Angling Section and also not forgetting Basri,
who was of great help in assisting throughout the process.

The Patron’s Night on 13 April 2018 at the Multi-Purpose
Hall (‘MPH’), Level 14 saw diners coming early all decked out
in their formal attire. Prior to the arrival of the Club’s Patron
T.Y.T. Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang Tun Dato’ Seri
Utama (Dr) Haji Abdul Rahman Bin Haji Abbas, the members
and guest were served finger food and drinks. It gave the members and invited guests an opportunity to mingle and to
get to know each other before the arrival of the VIPs.
The programme formally started with the arrival of our
Patron TYT at the Reception, who was warmly greeted by
the Main Committee. After a photo session, our Patron TYT
together with the VIPs adjourned to the MPH where TYT was
greeted by our members with a big round of applause. Once
the formal protocols were completed, dinner began with the
entertainment for the night from the 4-piece band “Heart
Desire” and also a solo saxophonist, Wan Andre.
During dinner, our President, Mr. Lim Shin Lid delivered his
speech highlighting our Club’s achievement for the year.
Thereafter, we enjoyed a lovely Tango dance performed by
Mr. and Mrs. Chew Cheng Lai from the Dance Sport Group
and two line dances by Ms Emmeline and her team. We were
also entertained by our very own Karaoke stars, Ms. Elaine
Tan who serenaded us with ‘Shanghai Tang’ and Mr. Jef Tan
who sang the classic ‘Getaran Jiwa’.

Chap Goh which is the 15th day of the Chinese Lunar New
Calendar Year traditionally marks the end of the Chinese New
Year Celebrations. This year our Club celebrated Chap Goh
eve with a dinner attended by 210 members and our guests
consisting of 20 Cheshire Home residents.
The celebrations started at 6pm with Lion Dance performance
commencing from the Tower Block and thereafter proceeding
to all the 15 Club outlets.
At 7.30 pm, our President, Mr Lim Shin Lid, welcomed all
members and guests to our Chinese New Year Celebrations
and wished everyone all the very best for the New Year.
Thereafter members helped themselves to the sumptuous
buffet spread comprising local food and a few traditional
delicacies namely “Bubur Cha Cha” and “Fried Tee Kueh”.
After dinner, the members watched and enjoyed the
acrobatic dance performances of the six Lions present.
They were subsequently entertained by the Karaoke Group
members who performed some Chinese New Year classics.
The ever popular “God of Prosperity” mascot, made a late
but much anticipated arrival, distributing the gold coin
chocolates and Mandarin oranges to appreciative children
and adults respectively. At the finale, members of the Main Committee set off fire crackers and members were treated to a spectacular fireworks display at the Seafront.

This annual event was scheduled on 7th January 2018 but
had to be postponed to 4th February 2018. Some 68
members took part in this event held at the beach near
the Sailing Area Shoreline.
Many of the participants were there, much earlier than
the registration time of 2.00pm. As the norm, these early
birds had booked their fishing posts; and we were told that some had already started fishing and even caught a good sized fish.
The Carnival started off with the fishing competition at 2.30pm. Being an angling event and with the majority of
participants comprising of anglers, it was just natural to
give this event prominence. Hence the fishing competition lasted 2 ½ hours and even then there was this reluctance to
reel up when the horn sounded at 5.00pm. For variety too,
the Committee decided to give prizes for the first 5 special fishes caught viz. Senangin, Sembilang, Grouper, Whiting and Grunter (Pekcho) instead of rewarding by weight the fish caught as in past years.
The second event, the“Korek Siput”competition which
lasted just half an hour started at 5.00pm; but none the less
many found it to be a laborious task, especially for the notso
young and able. And of course, the coarse and rough sand
added bruises and grazes to our hands and knees.
Last but not least, the 3rd and final event, the Sand Sculpture Competition was held from 6.00 to 6.30pm.
This year there was also a change in the format for drawing
of team mates for the Sand Sculpture Competition. Instead
of allowing the participants to select their own team mates,
the adult participants were divided into teams, selected by
serial numbering.
We too had observed that for the previous years that the
children usually joined their parent(s) team comprising
mainly of adults. This has curtailed the children’s chances of
playing with sand as the adults dominated both the choice
and the building of the sand sculpture.
This year, we decided to group the children into their
own group and “volunteered” Ms Yvonne Lim (one of the
parents) to prompt, guide and encourage each individual
child to do their bit and yet work as a team.
Obviously the children had a great time, having a free
playwith sand and yet achieved a collective end result - a
fantastic castle. Indeed, the judges were awed by children’s
creativity and skill. The Committee thanked Ms Yvonne for
obliging to be the chaperone for the day and I end with the
quote from Ms Yvonne: “It was great to see them working
on the castle with so much imagination and enthusiasm.”

The month of March signaled the end of the fishing competitions for the angling calendar of 2017/2018 and
concluded aptly with the Annual Prize Presentation &
Dinner, the finale of all Angling events.
It was not just an evening of celebration of the victors
but was also an evening fostering camaraderie among our
distinguished guests and the 75 odd Anglers.
This gathering was held on 17th March 2018 at the
Multi Purpose Hall, complete with the presentation of
awards intertwined with the serving of the delectable
8-course dinner.
Just for the record, each of the awards had been
fittingly earned, with consistent and indefatigable effort, notwithstanding the time and weather. An example to
quote are the awards for “Angler of the Year“ where one
had to accrue the points attained in the monthly fishing competitions held during the year. One can be sure that
the anglers will not want to skip any of the onshore fishing competitions held during the angling year.
And to add our merriment, the angling members were
honored with the presence of our Club President,
our Donors & Sponsors and their charming spouses.
Appropriately the Angling Section Committee would like
to record our heartfelt appreciation to our Sponsors - Club
President Mr. Lim Shin Lid, Club Trustee Dato’ Mahinder
Singh Dulku, Mrs. Amara Loh, Mr. Chan Kean Hin, Mr. Ung
Peng Joo, Mr. Ooi Theng Chee, Mr. Ooi Cheng Chye and
Mr. Danny Lee for their unswerving support.
Truly an enjoyable evening to be remembered especially
by the winners of the various competitions!

This Club event held on 4 March 2018 attracted 53 participants
vying for Angler of the Day Trophy and the many other
attractive prizes.
As expected, suspense filled the hot and humid Sunday afternoon as the participants registered for the event which
began at 12pm.
The excitement of the day was when Louis Wooi reeled up an
eel which weighed 2.294kg which undoubtedly made him the
Champion “Angler of the Day-open event”. Half an hour before
the end of the competition, Ung Seang Guan, our Equipment
Officer, brought up a handsome senangin or threadfin weighing 780gms to wrest the 1st Runner-up title from Tan Fung Liang.
And at 4.00pm the horn sounded, signaling the end of the
competition and the Competitors adjourned to the Snake
Temple for buffet-lunch. Unlike the other competitions, the
winners of the day had to wait till 17th March 2018 to receive
their prizes at the Annual Prize Presentation & Dinner.
A total of 78 members comprising 43 from the Angling
Section and 35 from the Tai Chi Group registered and
attended the Joint Angling/Tai Chi Chinese New Year
Dinner held on the night of 3rd February 2018 at MPH II.
As it is the common Chinese belief, the colour red,
corresponding with fire, symbolizes good fortune and joy. Naturally then, the participants were appropriately
dressed to the theme; either something in red or even
traditional for this auspicious occasion.
The Chairman of Angling Section, Mr. Beh Ping Seng, in
his welcoming speech recalled that the Angling Section
and the Tai Chi Group have been observing this joint
celebration for the past several years and he hopes that
this practice will continue to carry on in the future years
to come.
He emphasized that it is only fitting to have a joint celebration as many Members as well as the Committee
Members are also Members of both - Angling and Tai
Chi. Needless to say, the Members had benefitted from this amalgamation of their funds. Besides serving a more
sumptuous feast, we were able to include the traditional
tidbits of groundnuts and oranges and to top it all,
replacing the typical Chinese tea with beer and wine.
Mr. Beh’s message and sentiment were also echoed by
the Convener of the Tai Chi Group, Mr. Colin Yu. In his
speech, Mr. Colin Yu further thanked the Angling Section
Committee for successfully organizing this joint event.A simple but yet an enjoyable evening for all.

The Sailing Section congratulates the following five members who completed the above course on 18th March 2018:
Charles Slack, Teh Chin Leong, Tan Jo Han, Scott Ong Chen
Min and Ng Kok Peng.
The ‘Learn To Sail’ course is a basic (level I) course for
beginners and it comprises of theory and practical skills
taught over two weekends. In the course, participants learn
to understand the terms commonly used in sailing, recognise
wind directions, rig up the boat and finally, take the dinghy out to sail (solo). The course is ideal for members who wish
to take up sailing as a hobby or competitive sport (if one is
inclined to be more serious in the pursuit).

Our Masters Swimmer, Lim Cheang Cheang aged 68 had
a phenomenal performance in Singapore, at the end of
March. In the Open Category, she obtained a gold in the
25m butterfly, silvers in 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, 25m backstroke and 25m freestyle;
with new personal best times for all events.
We are very proud of her and her morning trainings
are paying off. We hope that will inspire more mature
swimmers in taking part in our Masters program, so
that we can build a strong competitive team for Penang
Swimming Club.

This swimming competition is a strange one, as it is actually
two competitions combined into one – the Malaysia
Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship, which is an
Open Invitational Competition and therefore other countries
are invited to participate; and the National Age Group (NAG)
Championships, which is also focusing at Malaysian state
teams compete against each other, which is also called
Closed. It leads to very confusing results for most of us and a
spreadsheet is needed to puzzle it out and keep track of who
is doing what. I am still not sure what is happening at times.
22 teams from as far as Cook Islands, Hong Kong, India,
Indonesia, Madagascar, Johor, Kedah, Labuan, Perak, Macau,
Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Penang, Perlis, Sabah,
Sarawak, Selangor, Sri Lanka, Terengganu, Thailand and Kuala
Lumpur competed against each other.
Hong Kong emerged as the overall winner with 60 golds, 43
silvers & 34 bronzes. Team Selangor was 2nd and Team Kuala
Lumpur was 3rd in the Malaysian Invitational Age Group.
Out of all the Malaysian states competing against each other
in the National Age Group, Penang emerged 3rd. Selangor
was first with 25 golds, 37 silvers and 33 bronzes; and Kuala Lumpur second with 18 golds, 29 silvers and 30 bronzes. Team
Penang did us proud with 7 golds, 17 silvers and 15 bronzes.
Team Penang comprised of 39 swimmers, with 11 from our
PSC Swim Team. These swimmers qualified to participate in this swimming competition because of their good results in
the 54th Speedo-PASA Age Group Swimming Championships
2018. They are Dickson Chin, Elynn Tan, Toh Ting Wei, Ashley
Too, Law Hong Bin, Cieran Wong, Chris Chew, Joel Darren
Kung, Josh Duncan Kung, Jesselyn Lim and Jolene Lim.
Elynn Tan did us proud by breaking the NAG meet record for
the 100m butterfly Girls 18 & over, with a time of 01:04.28. She won silver for the 100m freestyle, gold for the 50m
freestyle, gold for 100m butterfly, silver for 50m breaststroke, and silver for 50m backstroke – all in the MIAG competition
(open). Under NAG (closed) Elynn obtained golds for 100m
freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, and silver for 50m backstroke.
Joel Darren Kung is all smiles as he is now going to represent
Malaysia in the South East Asia (SEA) Age Group Swimming
Championships in the Philippines in the Boys 11 – 12 age
group. He will be travelling with 4 other swimmers from
Penang in July 2018. This is from his spectacular gold
performance in the 400m freestyle during MIAG and NAG.
Under NAG (closed), Joel obtained bronzes for 100m
freestyle and 50m butterfly, silvers for 100m backstrokeand 50m backstroke.
His younger brother, Josh Duncan was also stellar during
MIAG with silvers in 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke
and 50m backstroke; and a bronze in 100m backstroke. Under
NAG (closed), Josh won golds for 50m breaststroke, 100m
breaststroke, 50m backstroke, and silver for 100m backstroke.
Chris Chew swam to a fantastic silver medal for the 50m
butterfly in the Boys 13 – 14 category MIAG (open) and under NAG (closed) won silver for 50m butterfly, bronzes for 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle.
Jesselyn Lim obtained a silver in the 50m butterfly Girls 11-12 age group, under NAG (closed). Cieran Wong also won a
bronze for 400m freestyle Boys 13-14 category, under
NAG (closed).
This year, the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM)
introduced a new incentive to encourage young Malaysian
swimmers to train hard and dream big. It is called the
Malaysian All Stars where swimmers hit the times set by
ASUM for specific events in their age group. Our swimmers who made it into the Malaysian All Stars are Chris Chew,
Cieran Wong, Law Hong Bin, Jesselyn Lim, Joel Kung, Jolene
Lim & Josh Kung.
Our swimmers would like to extend their deep appreciation
and thanks to their Coaches and parents for all the dedication
and effort for getting them to the 54th Milo/PRAM Malaysia
Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship 2018.
Thank you!

The Scuba Section Committee of 2017/18 is drawing to
a close. Come May will be the Section’s AGM.
During the Chinese New Year Festive Season, our new
Scuba Equipment Room was officially opened. The event was reported in the March-April issue of Nautilus.
Members helped in the moving of equipment over. We
are enjoying the new facility, which is as good as any Dive
Centre, if not better. Now we can wash our equipment in
the spacious outdoor built-in cement water cisterns, with
spotlights and soon-to-be installed hot water shower.
Once again we thank the Club and its members for their
support to make this happen.
For March and April, our focus was to complete our
tasks for the year and to make the handover to the
new Committee seamless. One last big event was the
completion of OW Course for new batch of beginners.
The Open Water Assessment was carried out in Pulau
Payar over the 7-8th April weekend. Well done to our
freshly minted divers. Last but not least, many thanks
to our faithful and tireless instructors.
We look forward to the new year, 2018/19 for biggerand better diving.

An Enchanted Evening in Black, Silver & Gold was the theme
for our Annual Dinner cum birthday celebration for members.
Even though no one came dressed up as fairies, witches or
sleeping beauty, many came in black (with silver glitters) and
gold. To kick off the evening, current Karaoke champions
Quah Fong Fong and Kelvin Lowe each rendered a song.
Of course besides the champs other members obligingly
entertained us in between lucky draw sessions.
In the spirit of Chinese New Year, Karaoke Group members
were requested to attend our Get-Together party on 24
February dressed in red. All of the 94 members who came
brightened up the atmosphere with their attires, smiles
and cheerful chatter. Everyone received an angpow and a
mandarin orange. As usual the young ones and “young at
hearts” happily snapped selfies and wefies before and after dinner was served.

To save time and manpower, Devyn Khoo made the necessary
arrangements and facilitated gifts for the table draws. It
was a one-man effort greatly appreciated by fellow
committee members.
18 tables were taken up for the dinner. 12 members born
in the months of February & March jointly celebrated their
birthdays that night and each received an angpow.
There was overwhelming participation from the floor when two popular evergreen line dance numbers were played.
Congratulations to all lucky draw winners of club coupons
ranging from RM20 to RM100.
Our appreciation to the Club President Mr Lim Shin Lid &
Main Committee members Messrs Lim Khoon Seng, Paul
Harrison, Cheah Chin Tong and their lovely spouses for
gracing our function and rendering their favourite songs.
To all members, thank you for your continuous support.

The Dance Sport Group (DSG) held its Grand Theme Night on
Sat, 3rd March with a turnout of about 140 members and guests.
As usual, most of the ladies came appropriately dressed to the
theme “Those Were The Days” and most were seen excitedly
having their photographs and “selfies” taken before the start of the event proper. Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth poses
were, of course, the order of the evening.
The event was graced by Club President, Lim Shin Lid and his
wife. Also in attendance were Hon Sec, Lim Khoon Seng & wife,
Hon Treasurer, Lee Chee Lin & Club Captain, Michael Cheong.
After short speeches by DSG Convenor, TC Choong and
President, Lim Shin Lid, attendees were treated to a special
opener with a sensual Bachata dance led by TC Choong and
his wife, Teresa. Rumour has it that the couple spent endless
hours perfecting the dance in the privacy of their home.
It was an evening of practically non-stop dancing with not
only traditionally ballroom and latin dances but also disco
and line-dancing. To sum it up, it was truly a grand evening
to round off DSG’s entertainment programme for this term.
The Dance Sport Group’s AGM will be held at MPH2 on
Sunday, 29th April @ 3pm which will be followed by Hi-Tea.
DSG members are urged to attend the AGM.

The Penang Swimming Club Taekwondo Group held its
Annual Dinner on 20th March 2018 with a full Taekwondo
demonstration and of course food glorious food!
The event was kicked off with a speech by Mr. Lim Shin Lid,
the Club President who expressed his vision of self defense
classes for adult Club members.
Almost all the Taekwondo members who attended were
accompanied by their parents who came armed with their
cameras for the highlight of the dinner which was the
Taekwondo demonstration. Besides group demonstration
by all members, we also had a poomsae performance by
members of different grades and the highlight was women's
self defense display.
The demonstration materials were sponsored by the
members and parents and in total we smashed through over
140 wooden boards and 70 roof tiles leaving behind a trail of
destruction and yes the buffet line was also 'destroyed".
Our heartfelt thanks for the full support by the members
and parents resulting in this year's annual dinner doubling in
attendance compared to our previous year's dinner!

Prior to the Darts Group Annual Dinner on 24th March 2018,
the Group AGM took place at the Formal Dining Area of the
Captains Restaurant.
With a required quorum in attendance at 7.12pm, Chairman,
Anthony D Morley, called the meeting to order.
The Chairman, initially thanked members of management
and staff for cooperation during the year. He also thanked his
co-Committee members for their’ diligence and efforts on
behalf of the Group, during what had been a difficult year.
In lieu of an “Opening Address”, he stated that he wished
to express some opinions, and also make some comments
on behalf of the Darts Committee, prior to Point 5 on the
Agenda (Election of Office Bearers for 2018-19)
To this, the Members agreed, and hence the Meeting
proceeded to deal with Points 2 – 4, which were dealt with
as follows:-
The Group Members adopted and approved the Minutes of
the Group 18th AGM held on 25th March 2017, the Annual
Report for 2017-18 and the Group Accounts for the Year
Ended 31st March 2017.
At this point the Chairman referred to his earlier request, to
comment before “Electing Office Bearers for 2018-19”. He stated that in his opinion, the current Committee, which had
been re-elected en bloc for the previous 3 years, with some
having “held office” for 8+ years, must, tonight, give notice of calling an end to their tenure.
New ideas and fresh impetus were required. He doubted
that the members would tonight acquire the requisite
6 “volunteers”/nominees to form a new Committee, he
therefore put forward the following options:-
a. That if members wished to elect a new Committee
(of minimum 6) tonight, that the current Committee would “stand down” and allow the new nominees to
take office; or
b. That, after much discussion and persuasion between
themselves, the existing Committee would agree to remain in office, but that members must be prepared to elect a new Committee at the 2019, thus giving
members 12 months notice and therefore time
to canvas and lobby for suitable candidates to form
a new Committee.
After a short break allowing members to discuss the options,
Walvin LaBrooy proposed Option “b”, which was seconded
by Dato Lawrence Cheah.
The Chairman therefore confirmed that the current Committee would remain in office, as detailed below, but may make some minor changes in “office positions”, and that a new Committee must be elected at the 2019 AGM.

He then addressed the sponsors, thanking them not only for
their Trophy sponsorship, but also for the drinks sponsored
on the evenings of past and also tonight’s Darts Annual

support of the Group, was invaluable in terms of morale for
the Group.
He continued that often Group members are unaware
of what goes on “behind the scenes” when “managing”
a Group, and for that reason he wanted to express his
personal thanks, not only to the sponsors, but also to Club
President Shin, V.P. Najieb Ariff and Club Captain Michael
Cheong for their help and support.
With that, he announced that President Shin would like to
say a few words, after which dinner would be served, and
that the Prize Presentation would take place during dinner.
President Shin, in a short but succinct address, thanked
members for the invitation to the Annual Dinner, with
assurances that he understood the nature of the activities
of the Group and that internal Group and external Inter
Club competition should be encouraged, and that the Darts
Group would have his personal support whenever possible.
The 8 course dinner was then served.
During dinner, the Prize Presentation took place, as detailed
below:-
The presentation finished with members in jovial mood, but after further drinks were ordered and the dinner concluded,
the evening gradually drew to a close around 11pm.
The Darts Group Committee wishes to thank the members,
guests and sponsors for, once again, making the Annual
Dinner a relaxed, enjoyable and successful evening.
Added thanks to Darts Committee member Victoria
LaBrooy who organised the catering amidst change of
venue, revisions to menu and continually changing
attendance list.

In the final event of the 2017-18 Darts Team “Season”, we welcomed darters from Penang Sports Club on Thursday 29th
March 2018. With players and supporters from both Clubs
totalling around 40, plus 3 MC members, the Darts Room and
seating area was well filled for the pre match buffet dinner.
After a short welcome address from our Darts Chairman, a
response from Sports Club Captain, Jude, an exchange of
mementoes, and a few words from our Club President, Mr.
Lim Shin Lid, the “A” and “B” Team matches began.
With the “B” Team match starting slightly ahead, all focus was
on them. Leading from the front, Beh Ping Seng, set the tone
for the “B” Team performance, playing a major role in the
initial Foursome win, and following this with a “no nonsense”
2-0 win in the first Singles.
This established an early 3-0 lead for our “B” Team, which they
continued to build on throughout the match.
Wins for Lee C T / Walvin (1st Doubles), Yvonne (2nd Singles),
Jenny Beh / E K Lee (2nd Doubles) and finally Devyn (3rd Singles) were all achieved with confidence.
A resounding 11-3 final victory score was nothing less than fully deserved.
Whilst all this was taking place in the “B” Team match, our
“A” Team darters were having their usual “roller coaster ride”,
with most players alternating between periods of excellent
high, and inexplicable low scoring.
Trailing 1-3 after the Foursome and 1st Singles, Michelle /
Tony (1st Doubles) and Michelle (2nd Singles) ground out
victories to put PSC 5-4 ahead.
The 2nd Doubles was lost 1-2, despite Yeoh showing,
possibly, his best form in an Inter Club Match.
With the score tied at 6-6, Piao met Hari (Sports Club) in the
final Singles. Piao won the 1st Leg, but then, after a fast start in Leg 2, Piao’s good form disappeared, allowing Hari to win
Leg 2. Piao’s loss of form continued in Leg 3, until, with Hari
well ahead and seemingly in sight of victory, Piao produced
scores of 95, 81 and a 67 checkout in his last 9 darts.
The “roller coaster” had finished at a high point, and an 8-7 victory for our “A” Team.
PSC “B” Team Darters in fine form:“A” Team “snatch victory”
Our guests from Sports Club were their’ usual well
mannered, good humoured and competitive selves. We
trust that the ties between our two Clubs, now rekindled,
continue and strengthen. We understand that there is the
possibility of a reciprocal visit to Sports Club within the
coming 2-3 months.
Finally some thanks. Darts Committee members Piao &
Victoria for organising the match and the catering. Michelle
& Mike for the photos. And Catering and Events staff
(Areyanti & Fatin), who were also unexpectedly tasked with
acting as bar staff on a very busy night at the SeaFront.

Although it was a challenge last year for us to form a team
for the Penang Sports Club International Invitational Tennis
Tournament but again we managed to put in one Men’s and
one Ladies team for the tournament this year. With a change in
the format, the men’s and ladies competition were separated.
As usual the tournament held from 9th to the 11th March 2018
attracted a total of 24 men’s and 8 ladies teams from as far as
Australia, Thailand, Indonesia and various states of Malaysia.
The change in approach by the host made the tournament
more challenging with various types of players participating.
For our men’s team, we were placed together with STF
Avengers from Penang, Raintree Club and Hytech from KL.
The team only managed to qualify for Tier 2 as they only
managed to win one against Raintree Club. However the team
fought hard after that with couple of matches that could have
gone our way before losing in the end.
Meanwhile the ladies team were placed together with team
Rainbow from KL, Trang from Thailand and Sports Club Black
team. They have the same fate as men’s where they only
managed to qualify for Tier 2 as they only won once against
Sports Club Black team. After that they lost twice before
finally beating their final opponent of Sports Club Yellow team. Overall, feeling the intensity and seeing the different level
of tennis definitely help the players to look forward to more challenge in the future.

The PSC Library Story Telling Competition was held on
Saturday 17th March in the Mini Theatre. A total of nine
talented children took part in the competition, which was
organised according to age ranges in two groups. Group
one comprised five children aged between 9 and 11 years and group two comprised four children aged between 7
and 8 years of age.
Participants were asked to select a published story of their
choice to narrate to other participants and the judges who
formed part of the audience in addition to the organizers
and club members and their families.
Library News
Participants narrated their stories, one by one, from memory
after introducing themselves and the titles and authors of
their stories. A maximum time limit of 6 minutes was advised
for each participant. Other advice for participants given upon
registration, and utilized by the judges in their assessment of
each storyteller, included use of the voice, gestures, focus,
characterization, use of space, and pacing.
The judges and organizers were hugely impressed by the
high standard of the story telling. All participants displayed
a wealth of poise and confidence which made the task of selecting the prize winners a very difficult one for the judges. At the end of the day decisions had to be made and the
results were as follows:
