Mihi from Dux
Kia ora koutou ngā whānau o te Pirirakau. He
mihi aroha tenei ki te whānau Roberts/Apaapa i
tenei wa tino pouri.
Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui.
Autumn is in full swing now, judging by all the
leaves swirling around the Hauora front entry,
which have been blown across from Maramatan-
ga Park. This is very evident at Te Oturu with all
the deciduous trees loosing their leaves all over
the place. Temperatures have dropped and its
time to start lighting our fires to keep warm. The
flu season has arrived so I hope everyone who
needs to has had their flu vaccinations.
Clinic News
If you haven’t had yours yet, there is still time to
have a flu vaccination before it gets too cold.
Our doctors continue to be very busy and with
winter coming we expect the demand to in-
crease. Dr Moss has reduced his hours to half a
day on Tuesdays and we are currently looking at
options for cover.
Smokefree Hauora
I would like to remind everyone that the
Te Huhunu Trust / Pirirakau Hauora complex is
smokefree. On occasions I have seen from my
office window, people walking out of the Hauora
with a cigarette in their hand and lighting up in
the car park. We are very serious about our
stance on smoking in the vicinity of our Hauora
and our Smokefree Policy, and would appreciate
it if our whānau and visitors support and respect
this.
Smoking is one of the main contributors to illness
and ultimately death amongst our people and
Pirirakau Hauora promotes and supports Smoke-
free Environments.
If you are a smoker and would like to give up we
are happy to help you. We have staff trained in
Smoking Cessation and will be running
programmes to support those who wish to quit
smoking.
Pirirakau Hauora supports a
“Smokefree Aotearoa 2025”.
Website
As I mentioned in our last newsletter, we are in
the process of upgrading our website.
If you have been trying to access our original web-
site you fine that it is no longer available. We are
not sure what has happened to our connection
but have decided to leave it until our new website
is set up. Hopefully this will be up and running
soon.
New Recruits
Last month we advertised a position for a
Rangatahi Project Coordinator to deliver health
promotion programmes to the Rangatahi of the
Western Bay of Plenty, to cover for maternity
leave. This position has now been filled and we
have 2 new kaimahi who will be covering the posi-
tion part-time. They are Erena Koopu and Rihi
Motutere who between them bring a variety of
skills and ideas .

Programmes
On the 9th to the 12th May 2013 we held a
Marae-based Tikanga Programme for the
Department of Corrections. This programme was
for wahine to become more comfortable within a
marae setting and learn some of our traditional
values. The wananga included a walk to the top
of Mauao to learn the history of Ngati Ranginui
and Tauranga Moana and concluded with a hakari
for their whanau on the Sunday.
At
a
base of Mauao before the big climb
As mentioned in our previous newsletter we have
begun the Computers in Homes and Stepping Up
training on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at
the Hauora. Please remember that if you want to
be a part of our free educational programmes we
expect you to make a commitment to turning up
every week. Our tutor travels from Welcome Bay
every week and gives up her time to be here, we
would appreciate it if you could make the same
commitment. Kia kaha koutou—we would hate
to have to cancel future courses because a few
are not able to commit.
Our Rangatahi team are organising a “Quit
Smoking” workshop for those that want to give up
smoking. Details are included in this newsletter.
Services
Don’t forget that we offer a Podiatry Clinic on the
1st Wednesday of each month at Te Oturu. The
next clinic is due to take place on 5th June. If you
are interested, please give Mahia a ring.
For all those hapū wahine who are still yet to
engage with a midwife, we offer a midwifery
service at the Hauora. A midwife is available
every Monday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. If you
would like to visit the midwife just drop in
between those hours or ring and see if she is free.
Our next Te Ha Ora ante natal programme will be
held at the Early Years Hub on Cameron Road on
29th May, 5th and 12th June. These will be night
classes . Our next Te Puna course will be a day
class at Te Oturu starting on 3rd July. If you are
expecting a new addition to your whānau and
would like to attend a Kaupapa Maori course this
may be just what you are looking for. Give TeRina
or Diana a call at the Hauora and they can give
you all the information you need.
Birthday
I know last month I mentioned our 20th birthday
and promised to keep you updated each month.
Well to be totally honest, it has been such a busy
month we have not had a chance to sit down and
think about ideas for our birthday celebration. It
is definitely on the agenda for this month to begin
some planning, so hopefully next month we may
have some ideas. So until then we will think about
it and update you all then.
Kia ora

Kia Ora PIRIRAKAU!!!
I was born in bred in the heart of Te Puna and have spent most of my life here. I attended Pirirakau Kohanga Reo, was a student of Te Puna Matauranga, and boarded at Sacred Heart Girls’ College in Hamilton, before moving home to
Aquinas College. I was fortunate enough to complete my final year of schooling in Chile as a cultural and educational exchange student.
I am now a tauira at Massey University in my final year studying part time towards
a Bachelors’ Degree majoring in Psychology and Anthropology, minoring in Rehabilitation Studies.
I have been privileged enough to join the team at Pirirakau Hauora on a
part-time basis as a Rangatahi Projects Coordinator.
I will be working along side Erena and Rangatahi in the development, coordination and delivery of Youth programs and activities that address
and promote mental and sexual health and wellbeing.
I look forward to working with the Hauora awesome staff and am excited to help create some positive changes for the Rangatahi in our community.

Massage Therapy
Who doesn't love the thought of a long, soothing, full body massage? Not only are massages relaxing to the body and mind. In fact, they can be used to correct medical conditions, eliminate chemical dependency, and alleviate many toxic conditions. It's important to realize that massages are used equally as therapy and pampering. There are many conditions that can benefit from massage therapy and no holistic health therapy approach would be complete with-out massage therapy.
Massage therapy is a comprehensive discipline that is used to assist in spinal re-alignment, muscle and joint therapy, migraines and neck problems. In addition, deep tissue massage has been proven to be beneficial in stimulating the lymphatic system, which is responsible for moving lymph fluid through the body and carrying away toxins, viruses, parasites, and heavy metal pollution. While the following list is by no means exhaustive, here are some conditions that can benefit from different massage therapy techniques:
Spinal alignment Stress and tension Migraines Posture issues Hypertension Lymphatic stimulation Flexibility Back pain Circulation Burn recovery PMS
According to the National Center for complementary and Alternative Medicine, those individuals who underwent massage therapy noted the following results: Pre-term infants have improved weight gain. Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping. High blood pressure patients reported a lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress
hormones. Burn injury patients reported reduced pain, itching, and anxiety. Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased air flow. Arthritis sufferers reported fewer aches and pains, along with less stiffness. As you can see, massage therapy has the potential to assist in the treatment of many conditions and is not just a relaxation method. I know that many people are apprehensive to make an appointment to get a massage because they feel like it's an imposition. Many people don't like the idea that they are being "waited on" and pampered like a king. But, massage therapy isn't really like that. It is an excellent tool in the combat of many conditions that otherwise would be treated with chemical pills. You wouldn't be ashamed to make an appointment with your family doctor for pain management or other health issues. Likewise, you should not feel uncomforta-ble to seek alternative healing methods like massage therapy. Your mind and body will thank you for the holistic treatment that a massage therapy appointment will bring you. Dr. Schreibman

How heavy is a glass of wa-
The absolute weight of it doesn’t matter.
It depends how long you can hold it! . .. if you hold it for a minute that’s not a problem, if you hold it for an hour you will have an ache in your arm, if you hold it for a day you will have to call an ambulance. In each case it’s the same weight, but the longer you hold it the heavier it becomes – that’s the way it is with stress.
If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we wont be able to carry on.
As with a glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night….. Pick them up tomorrow.
Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue!
Always keep your words sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
Drive carefully ….its not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.
If you cant be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. Never buy a car you cant push.
Never put both your feet into your mouth at the same time, because then you wont have a leg to stand on.
Nobody cares if you can’t dance and sing well. Get up and sing and dance.
When everything is coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.
Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour . . .
