Antes del inicio de la automatización, los procesos industriales estabancontrolados por operadores, que observaban la evolución del proceso y hacían ajustes manuales sobre las señales de control. Por ejemplo en el control de hornos, el operador bajaba el nivel de combustible cuandoobservaba una temperatura demasiado alta. El operador se basaba parasu actuación en la experiencia que tenía y en su conocimiento de la dinámica del proceso, pero basicamente su actuación era una reacción al error ya producido.

Estos controladores producían la acción de control a partir del error entre la “consigna” (valor deseado permanente para la variable bajo control) y el valormedido de dicha variable, es decir, estos controladores reaccionaban al error yaproducido (denominandose esta estrategia realimentación negativa).Dado que los procesos industriales suelen responder a relaciones causa-efectodesconocidas, complejas y variables con el tiempo, la aplicación de loscontroladores PID requiere en muchos casos de ajustes manuales tediosos y a menudo su rendimiento no es satisfactorio. Durante muchos años ha existidopues un vacío metodológico en la práctica del control industrial.
La tecnología electrónica analógica permitió el inicio de la automatización y los controladoresPID (Proporcional, Integral y Derivativo) pasaron a ser utilizados en la industria, reduciendo la necesidad de una atencióncontinua del operador, llegando a ser la herramienta estandar de control industrial.

El intento de superar el vacío dejado por los controladores PID, llevó al desarrollo de sistemas expertos que emulaban la actuación de operadoresexperimentados aplicando reglas al control del proceso. Obviamente el rendimiento de estos sistemas no podía exceder el del operador, eransistemas ad hoc, dificiles de desarrollar y mantener, y sensibles a los cambiosen la dinámica del proceso. Los resultados en definitiva no respondieron a lasexpectativas que estos sistemas habían despertado.

Soluciones de control predictivo basadas en un modelo fijo han sido aplicadas en la industria con relativo éxito. Sin embargo, requieren de un esfuerzo y coste considerable para desarrollar el modelo necesario para iniciar la acción de control y su rendimiento se deteriora debido a la falta de adaptación cuando la dinámica del proceso cambia.

Una nueva metodología de control que combina el CAP con el control experto, patentada en 2001, fue introducida para considerar situaciones en las que la operación del proceso es anormal y, asimismo, para introducir el conocimientodel proceso del que se dispone en el controlador. En ella está basada la serie de robustos controladores ADEX disponibles hoy en día en la industria.

La señal de control es generada por el modelo predictivo a partir de la salida deseada, de acuerdo con el principio de control predictivo. Por tanto, el modelo predictivo calcula la señal de control que hace la salida predicha del proceso igual a la deseada.

La salida deseada es generada por el bloque conductor a partir del set point o consigna fijado por el operador. De hecho la salida deseada tiene la significación de ser una trayectoria deseada que debería de ser seguida porla salida del proceso para alcanzar el set point.

Si el modelo predictivo fuera perfecto y no hubiera perturbaciones actuandosobre el proceso, este diagrama de bloques definiría un sistema de control ideal. Sin embargo, no es realista considerar que "a priori“ se dispone de un modelo perfecto y, adicionalmente, siempre existen perturbaciones que actúansobre el proceso. Es por ello que este diagrama de bloques debe completarse con un mecanismo de adaptación.

El mecanismo adaptativo actúa a dos niveles. En un primer nivel , a partir de las señales de E/S del proceso y del error de predicción, el mecanismo adaptativo ajusta los parámetros del modelo predictivo para hacer que el error de predicción tienda hacia cero.

En un segundo nivel, el mecanismo adaptativo informa al bloque conductor sobre el estado actual del proceso y sobre la desviación de la salida del proceso de la trayectoria deseada. Esta información la utiliza el bloque conductor para redefinir la trayectoria deseada en dicho instante de control.

El Control Adaptativo Predictivo, de acuerdo con este diagrama de bloques, ha demostrado un funcionamiento excelente en su aplicación a procesos industriales siempre que exista una relación causa-efecto que determina la dinámica del proceso y siempre que esta relación se pueda identificar por medio de un modelo.

Con frecuencia la relación causa-efecto de un proceso está presente en ciertos dominios de operación, mientras que en otros no existe o no puede ser modelada en tiempo real con seguridad. En estos otros dominios, no se recomienda la aplicación de control AP.
