HYMNS OF THE DAY
Apolitikion of the Resurrection
Christ is risen form the dead; by death trampling down upon
death, and to those in the tombs, He has granted life.
Eisodikon of the Small Entrance
In the congregations bless God, Lord, Who springs out of Israel.
Save us, O Son of God, Who rose from the dead, as we sing to
You, Alleluia.
Apolytikia of the Myrrh-bearers Tone 2
When you descended to death, O immortal life, you struck
Hades dead by the flash of your Divinity; when you raised the
dead from under the earth, all the Powers of heaven cried out:
Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to you
Tone 2
The noble Joseph, taking Your immaculate Body down from the
Tree, and having wrapped It in pure linen and spices, laid It for
burial in a new tomb. But on the third day arose, O Lord,
granting great mercy to the world.
Tone 2
Unto the myrrh-bearing women the Angel cried out as he stood
by the grave: Myrrh oils are fitting for the dead, but Christ has
proven to be a stranger to corruption. But cry out: The Lord is
risen, granting to the world great mercy.
Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom)
Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen
You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit down upon them
and through them the universe You drew unto Your net. O lover
of mankind glory to You.
Kontakion - Tone 8
Even though You went down into the tomb, You destroyed
Hades' power, and You rose the victor, Christ God, saying to
the myrrh-bearing women, "Hail!" and granting peace to Your
disciples, You who raise up the fallen.

EPISTLE READING
EPISTLE READER..... NOAH JOHNSON
Priest: Let Us Attend…
Reader: The Lord is my strength and my song…The Lord
has chastened me sorely.
Priest: Wisdom…
Reader: The Reading is from Acts of the Apostles 6:1-7
Priest: Let us be Attentive...
Reader: IN THOSE DAYS, when the disciples were
increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against
the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in
the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the
body of the disciples and said, "it is not right that we
should give up preaching the word of God to serve
tables. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you
seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of
wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will
devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the
word." And what they said pleased the whole multitude,
and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the
Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochoros, and Nicanor, and
Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaos, a proselyte of
Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they
prayed and laid their hands upon them. And the word of
God increased; and the number of the disciples
multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the
priests were obedient to the faith.
7
GOSPEL READING
The Reading is from The Gospel of Mark 15:43-47; 16:1-8
At that time, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member
of the council, who was also himself looking for the
kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and
asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate wondered if he
were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he
asked him whether he was already dead. And when he
learned from the centurion that he was dead, he
granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen
shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen
shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn
out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of
the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of
Joses saw where he was laid. And when the sabbath
was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of
James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might
go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the
week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen.
And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away
the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking
up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; for it was
very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young
man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe;
and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be
amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.
He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they
laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is
going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he
told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for
trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and
they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

MINISTRY NEWS
PHILOPTOHOS NEWS Thank you to our Chairman Tricia Kremer and her great committee for
the beautiful Mother’s Day Luncheon and Fashion Show! We had a
wonderful day as we honored our Philoptohos Mother of the Year
Susan Patzakis. Thank you to all of you who supported us whether by
attending the luncheon or placing an ad in the program book. It is
truly because of your generosity that we are able to continue our work
of helping the suffering and the poor as well as our Cathedral.
SHOES FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN project: Our Philoptohos is
spearheading a drive with the FOCUS group to get one new pair of
athletic shoes to homeless children registered in the Los Angeles
Unified School District, two times a year. There are 60,000 children
registered as ‘homeless’ in the Los Angeles schools, more than any
other city in the United States. They live in cars and they live on the
streets. Focus has put us in touch with a major shoe manufacturer that
will be donating all of the shoes. Our chapter is going to be
volunteering and working at the warehouse/storage facility sorting
shoes for the deliveries. We will be having more activities for this major
project throughout the year. If you are interested in helping and
joining in the work, you may call the church office and leave your
phone number for Judie Christopoulos. Thank you!
PENNIES AND PRAYERS: Our Pennies and Prayer’s collection is taking
place currently in the Sunday School Classrooms, as well as in the
coffee hour foyer at the ‘welcome’ table. Pennies ‘n Prayers is a
group developed by Metropolitan Gerasimos to start new mission
parishes and help them become self-sufficient. If you wish to donate,
please send a donation with your children to Sunday School or you
may leave it at the office marked for Philoptohos Pennies and Prayers.
Donations should be received before the end of May.
Thank you to all who donated to our collection for the Domestic
Violence Agency. One in four women will experience some type of
domestic violence in her lifetime. Women ages 20 to 24 are at the
greatest risk for abuse. More than 1.5 million women are abused by a
partner or spouse every year. The circle of violence is not easily
broken. One out of three women who are victims of homicide are
murdered by a spouse or boyfriend.
Our General Assembly and Election Meeting is immediately after
liturgy today. Please come directly to the second floor of the
Huffington Center to the General Assembly Room when you are
dismissed from church. There will be a short meeting before elections.
With love in Christ’s service,
Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors

COMMUNITY NEWS
GAIH NEWS The NEW WORKS READING SERIES of the Greek-Americans In
Hollywood Ministry presents the staged reading of “The Greek
Battalion” on Saturday, May 25 at 1pm in the Huffington Center of
The Saint Sophia Cathedral. The screenplay, based on the
autobiography “Yannis” by WWII hero John Giannaris, was
adapted for the screen by writer/producer Louis Anastas.
(Giannaris was honored at Saint Sophia just last year.) It retells the
true story of how Giannaris, and the 21 Greek-American
commandos he led, battled thousands of Germans in Nazi-
occupied central Greece (near Thermopylae) in the tumultuous
days after D-Day. The reading will feature accomplished Greek-
American actors John Kapelos, Louis Mandylor, and Peter Nikkos,
among many others. Don’t miss out on this important cultural
event! A discussion to follow. Admission and parking are free.
Contact peter@peternikkos.com for more information.

For those who are sick or suffering…
St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call for
the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing
him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will
save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has
committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14)
Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for and
prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need
prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of one of our
priests after services, or to schedule this with one our priests during
St Sophia Cathedral’s office hours.
As you request prayer, you may also wish to make an offering to
