"This article argues that, since the end of the Cold War, democracy has become one of the
central objectives of hemispheric integration within the Americas. Nevertheless, this objective
is still in construction in terms of action.
This argument will be demonstrated by the two central arguments
that will be used to defend our thesis. In the first part, we will explain how OASs normsreflect a hemispheric consensus with respect to democracy.
In the second part, we will present two case studies in order to demonstrate the efficiency of
inter-american norms and instruments that favour democracy: the OASs intervention indemocratic destabilization in Venezuela (2002-2004) and the OASs intervention in theHonduran Coup dtat (July 2009-January 2010). By developing these two arguments we willbe
able to corroborate whether the OAS has actually changed the nature of the normative
obligations of member Status with respect to democracy.

"Since the beginning of the Arab Spring, the so-called Turkish modelhas become a key ingredient of the discourse of democratization in the
Middle East. Despite the widespread interest, however, there is a great
sense of confusion caused by the subjective use and misinterpretationof the model. The study will point to the weaknesses of the two
conventional understandings of the Turkish model and offer a new approach.
The study will acknowledge various socio-economic, cultural
and political differences between Turkey and Middle Eastern societies
and the fact that the full application of the model may not be possible,
however, the article will conclude that despite these differences, the
Turkish model has a lot to offer in terms of guidance in areas such as
the state-religion relations, the role of military, economic development
and democracy building."

"Despite a severe economic crisis, social unrest and growing pressure for political change inIndonesia, President Suhartos hold on power seemed secure shortly before his fall in 1998.By describing the unfolding events since 1996, tracing the economic and social background,
analysing the government's response and evaluating the actors most likely to shape
Indonesia's future, this study provides key insights for understanding current processes of

More Info: "Under Indonesia's authoritarian New Order regime, the continued existence of the
Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) was meant to demonstrate the ostensibly democratic
character of the regime. In essence, this small nationalist-Christian coalition was meant to rfill
the role of pliant state corporatist party. From the later 1980s, however, the PDI became moreopenly critical of government policies and came to stand out as the major proponent of reform
within the formal politica system. The govenrment responded in 1996 by engineering the
removal of the populat Megwati Sukarnoputri as PDI leader, a move that significantly
damaged the popular legitimacy and moral standing of the regime. Against this background,
the book assesses broader questions of political culture, political participation, regime
maintenance and opposition in the late Suharto era. The political culture perspective provides
a fresh understanding of politics under the New Order and its influence on the systems of
power and political relations in post-Suharto Indonesia."

In this article we argue that Morocco has experienced fundamental political change over the
past decades. This transition however cannot be understood in terms provided by the
mainstream narratives linking economic liberalisation to democratisation. Rather, transition
reflects a shift towards authoritarian modalities of neoliberal government. We focus on how
political power has been reconfigured into new forms of hybrid government where state, market and civil society interact in novel ways, by discussing the political dynamics ofhigh-end urban development and the rationales underpinning social development policies to
explain how poor people are integrated into the realm of the market.More Info: "co-authored with Sami Zemni published in Review of African Political Economy

Power emerges from an institutional coretheregimewhich exerts its hegemony over subordinated institutions, spaces and scales. Thus, the regime presents itself as the privileged site of political formation, intervention and inquiry.
The result is a body of scholarship that has largely neglected the dynamics of new statespace formation at the urban scale. Drawing on the case of the Bouregreg project, a massivehigh-end urban development scheme positioned between the twin cities of Rabat and Sal,
Morocco, this paper investigates the dynamics of agency formation implicated in the creationof a new state space and considers what it reveals about state respatialisation and the rise of
new governmental arrangements that have been elided by mainstream accounts on the Middle
East and North African region.

Contemporary theoretical examinations of the processes of democratization have a common
feature. They view the transformation of regimes and the implementation of democracy from
the perspective of institutionalization. Moreover, they evaluate the success of democratization
according to minimalistic definitions of democracy. These theories manifest in a disregard for
the historical dimension of a development in the meaning of democracy, and its relation tolocal and contemporary circumstances. As a consequence, these theories shed little light on
the origins and vicissitudes of democratization in the different regions of the world. In this
paper, I argue that the contextualizing historiographic method of the Cambridge School, and
in particular the work of John Dunn, offer a valuable means to a critical reflection of
democratization.

In the last two decades, many new democracies have adopted a semi-presidential system.
However, scholarship still tends to focus on the negative effects of the system. Scholars
believe that semi-presidentialism may encourage contradictory and ineffectual policies
leading to government instability and democratic breakdown. In particular, cohabitation is
considered to foster institutional conflict. This paper examines whether cohabitation is as
problematic as the literature suggests. It does so, by analysing the effect of cohabitation in
Timor-Leste, a young democratic state in a post-conflict setting. This paper confirms that in
Timor-Leste cohabitation encouraged institutional conflict specifically, but not exclusively,
over issues related to national security and defence. In addition, it shows that Timor-Lestespost-conflict context influenced institutional conflict and prevented democratic institutions

outside Europe may be more perilous than recent literature on semi-presidential systems
suggests.

"Young Europeans now grow up in an era characterized by escalating economic, political,
social and educational inequalities, increasing racism and xenophobia, a high level of
unemployment and a declining trust in nearly all major social and political institutions. But
how do these emerging processes of marginalization play out within and beyond educational
institutions? How can we educate teachers for the new situation? In exploring these questions,
the authors of this Honorary Volume pay their tribute to the research work of Professor Anne-Lise Arnesen, who has revealed an impressive effort in educating teachers for a diverse,
tolerant and inclusive society throughout her working life.

"The Middle East and North Africa represent today the epicentre of world crisis(Hinnebusch, 2003: 1) and constitute the most problematic area for international peace and
stability. Scholars and policy-makers alike have identified the absence of democratic regimes
in the region as the main cause for such instability. The failure of democracy to take hold in
the Arab world is therefore widely perceived to be the root cause of international conflicts,
economic stagnation and political violence. While such causal mechanism may be over
simplistic (Dalacoura, 2005), it nevertheless correctly points to some sort of contemporary
Arab exceptionalism when it comes to the establishment of democratic governance. Suchexceptionalism however should not be confused with political, social or economicimmobility, as the impact of global forces has over time considerably changed the landscape
of Arab polities. In fact, up until the end of the 1980s there was nothing exceptional in the
authoritarian nature of Arab regimes when compared to other regions of the world and manyof the same dynamics of change that characterised most of the globe in the 1980s and early
1990s had an influence on the M
