This document contains 4 hymns relating to ancestral (Pitru) worship. They are as
below:
1. Svadha Puja/Stotra
Svadha Pujais taken from Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Prakriti Khanda, and Chapter 41
titled Svadhopakhyanam(Story of Svadha). It is given that one must perform Pujato Svadha
Deviprior to performing Sharaddhato ancestors without which the latter is ineffective. One
who chants Svadhathrice gets the benefit of bathing in holiest of all waters, gets absolved of
all sins. One who performs Svadha worship with the given procedure gets the benefit of
performing Shraddhaand chanting Vedas.
2.
Pitru/Matru Stuti from Brihad-Dharma Puranam
The following is a rare hymn on Pitrusby Lord Brahmaand appears in Chapter 2of
Brihad Dharma Puranam.
Lord Brahmadeclares that one should chant this stotramevery day morning, the days
of Shraddha for Pitrusand ones own birthdays.This could also be chanted in front of ones
father as an obeisance to him. One who does so never faces any misfortune. Even if one has
done all sorts of bad deeds, the mere chanting of this hymn will measure upto a Prayashchitta
(atonement) and will please Pitrusto bestow all comforts and wealth.
This is followed by Sage Vyasas Matru Stotramdescribing the greatness of Matruand
21 sacred names of mother. In this hymn, Sage Vyasadeclares that a mother is greater than
father for she takes care of the baby in the womb during Garbha. There is no greater Guruin
all the worlds than mother in the same way as there is no holier water than Ganga, greater
Prabhu (Lord) than Vishnu, greater Pujaniya (venerable) Lord than Lord Shambhu (Lord
Shiva), greater Vratathan Ekadashi, etc.
3. Pitru Stutis by Ruci from Markandeya Puranam (2 Stutis)
This is a rare dual hymn on Pitrus by Ruci (Manu) and appears in Chapter 93/94 of
Markandeya Puranam. Chapters 92-94describe the Raucya Manvantaraand the story of
Ruci Manu/Prajapati. Seeing Ruci living as a bachelor, his Pitrus questiion why he has not
taken to the path of house-holder which enables him to pay worship to Gods, Pitrus, Rishis
and Gueststhereby getting gains in the celestial worlds. Though a heated exchange of views
about wedlock follows between Ruci and his ancestors, he becomes perturbed by Pitrus
advice and therefore prays to Lord Brahmawho in turn advises him to pray to his Pitrusto
get all he wanted and the following hymn was created by Ruci.
This hymn actually consists of two partsthe first part in Chapter 93is the prayer by
Ruciseeking the blessing of ancestors and a maiden and the rest appears in Chapter 94. This

hymn also 31 classes of Pitrus Vishva, Vishvabhug, Aradhya, Dharma, Dhanya,
ShubhAnana, Bhutida, Bhutikrit, Bhuti, Kalyana, Kalyanakartru, Kalya, Kalyatarashraya,
Kalyatahetu, Anagha, Vara, Varenya, Varada, Pushtida, Tushtida, Vishvapatri, Dhatru,
Mahat, Mahatman, Mahita, Mahimavan, Mahabala, Shukhada, Dhanada, Dharmada, and
BhUtida.
His ancestors appear in the form of light pleased with his prayer. Ruci continues the
prayer with the second part. Pitrusgrant the boon requested by Ruci as well as the boon that
he will become Prajapati. At the end, the Pitrus also sing the praise of this prayer and the
benefits one accrues by chanting this prayer at the time of Shraddhato forefathers, a excerpt
of which is given below:
Whatever a man shall gratify us with this hymn in faith, we shall give him enjoyments,
sublime spiritual knowledge, perfect body health, wealth, progeny. We become immensely
pleased when this hymn is chanted by the man standing posture in front of the Brahmanas.
Even if the Shraddhais performed by a Brahmanawho is devoid of Vedic knowledge or done
in a defective manner, or performed at a wrong time at a wrong place or without faith, etc.
This hymn thus chanted at the time Shraddhaprovides delight and nourishment to us for 12
years if chanted in winter, 24 years if chanted in Hemanta Ritu, 16 years if chanted in
spring/summer, and 15 years if chanted in autumn. We shall be present at the time of
Shraddhain whose house this hymn is available in written form always.
