Tradidtional art market and education center in Insa-dong
Since Chosun Dynasty, Insa-dong was a place where people could buy brushes and ink sticks and throughout
the Up until today, as the concept ‘culture’ brushed up to surface Insa-dong was adorned naturally by time
and became favorably comparable in the world market. Yet, as this road commerciallized the original
composition of this road, such as the antique shops, minor galleries, and art shops are being driven out as we
speak. Instead, commercial stores are increased in high speed. Thus these changes in these streets are making
Insa-dong indefinate of its identity between commerce and tradition and it will eventually fall under the rule of
commerce For that reason, I wish to revitalize not the area where its commerciallization already began but the
ply right behind the roads. This can help antique shops, minor galleries, and art shops can gather up as a
whole and form a community concentrated in arts. Furthermore, provide more of a warm welcome to the
visitors of Insa-dong allowing easy approach to the arts thus if interested anyone is welcome to look in more
depth into this area. Through this joint community minor galleries can concentrate their knowledge and
information into one and commonly use this area for the purposes they lacked before, such as promotion
area, research area, and supply area.

manu_factory stack+commnunity space Sung-su dong
In the past, because ‘Sung-su’ was considered to the outskirt from the urban center,
many factories are made here-no planning, spontaneous generation. After then, as the
urban center is larger and larger, ‘residential, commercial and office’ function buildings
are built. So, in Sung-su many factories are got into the urban center.
In this condition, spontaneous generated factories and the urban buildings are very
disordered. After then, because of this disorder, city re-organization are started, but car
& pedestrian road are not seperated and geen space is very poor, until now-city infra-
is very poor!!
As a result, where Sung-su is very complex, making the coexistence method through
the program of manufactory-identity of this area, and then the paradigm of factories
make change goooood!

STREET USE
EXPANSION / RELATION WITH OTHER FACTORIES
Stuff (making material, complete product) that workers put out temporarily outside (like street)can be the IDENTITY of that factory. The bigger the scale of space that the workers need byreason of storage or temporary charge, the higher the using ratio of this flexible space.
front yard back yard
Because the physical scale of factory is very small to itself, they need parasiticspace. At first, that space is made for subordinate part, soon does play part insubstantial function.Furthermore, similar factories have a relation with each other, throught thesespaces. And have a possibility of expansion.

STACK
BUMP!!
Existing ‘apartment type factory’ has same height and similar scale (almost 4~4.5m)-uniformly size- because of more cheap construction cost. But, ‘manufactories’need to have more various height, size and building system. So, apt type factories were used for offices, and then manufactories are ousted gardually. So, when the factories are stacking, although the nuber of factories in 1 floor plan is less, making more various module of height and size, and more staking offloors. It is more pleasant for the manufacturer to use that space. Furthemore, the vertical spaces made by staking those spaces can have various use-ex) storageor arrangement room.
As vetically staking, factories have space like ‘Bump’. That can beempty space or space for various purpose. These spaces help thevarious type of factory use for itself.

SEW THE URBAN FABRIC
infrastructure for life ; reuse Gueongchoon abolished railroad track site
The city is constantly changing and being developed. Accordingly, the infrastructure with missing values
within city is left abandoned unusing other programs, transformed into park with a general way. However,
the residents in residential area adjacent to Infrastructure have to live with damage from that.
So, abolished infrastructure must be restored to the ‘infrastructure for life’ to improve the quality of life for
residents.
In the past, the government focused on the expansion of road but investment of the railroad was not enough.
Today, the straightening of railway and improvements, trend of underground railway system, a few number
of main rails have been closed. as the area is growing, it became 11,621,000(sqm) in 2012, which is similar to
the Kimpo - New Town area. In all of cities, the consideration for the method of utilization has been started.
However, because of a long and narrow shape of the site, most of them commonly used as a park or open
space. the space can be ambiguous area without any acceptance of residents’ requirement. moreover,
undifferentiated flow of making park cannot resolve the persistent problem, ‘disconnection’ and if the plan is
progressed without the structural considerations for the entire region, it can cause even more disconnection.

Because of the Gyungchun line, the roads are disconnected and most of the roads areformed in the way of alleys. Even though some underdeveloped commercial facilitesare scattered aside the railway, the site is generally lack of main features ascommercial or business. adjacent to the main roads and highways traffic flow is veryactive but most of the them are move to 2nd living area without passing through thesite, and even though the site of Shin Gongdeok station area is used as farmland, butactually left as neglected condition. In addition, a lot of universities including SeoulNational University of Technology, Seoul Women's University, the Korea MillitaryAcademy, the Samyuk University and the Gwangwun University are concentrated, butthere are lack of commercial or industrial facilities for the universities nearby.
My main idea is that erasing boundary. It will be another isolated isle if site has strong boundary and make new space with that strict line. So, it is necessary to erase the boundary and connect urban fabrics directly.

ELECTRICITY+MOBILITY=?
We imagine transfrom of city network
EV will be linked to our life deeply and change entire of it.
Buildings enlarge parking space to get more energy then they can link above.
A plaza can be very flexible because of electric system underneath.
Interface of building and vehicle will be very different from now.
What we have is JUST BEGINNING OF THROUWING QUESTIONS.
ARE WE READY FOR THE FUTURE?
Bart Reuser Studio 5
Bae, Sang-Hyun 배상현
BAE, SANG HYUN 9392
“Today in Korea 34% of energy produced is wasted at night due to a lack of storage capacity”
What would happen to the city if the electric car of the future would become an energy storage and provider instead of an energy consumer? Thisstudy investigates the future of the electric car beyond the possibilities of the vehicle itself. Future EV cars can be upgraded to not only transportpeople but transport and deliver energy as well, thereby making each building more self-sufficient. The result will be a city in which the relationbetween cars and buildings will be totally different from everything we know at the moment. - Bae Sanghyun
PROLOGUE _ ELECTRIC VEHICLE
We are in a period of transition into the sustainablelifestyle. One of the biggest global issues for years is thechallenge of going green. Architecture has been followingup closely with several eco developments of its own, andvehicles are no exception. The first commercializedelectric vehicle ‘Nissan Leaf’ was launched in the marketlast year. At present, there are hundreds of research anddesign labs in vehicle companies and universitiesexploring the capabilities of this EV system. As a commercial product, the Leaf boasts a top speed of145km/h and the ability to cover approximately 100kmon a fully charged battery. However, other features causecustomers to be less inclined to buy an EV, such as thegradual loss of battery capacity, which is expensive toreplace, as well as the high cost of the car.
ENERGY USE_STORAGE PROBLEM INKOREA
Going green is not only about developing alternativeenergy sources, but also the smarter use of energy. SouthKorea, like Japan, does not have much energy resource butconsumes massive amounts of energy, hence energy self-sufficiency is extremely low, as little as 3%(1.3). One goodpoint, however, is that electricity consumption forhousehold use in Korea remains very efficient.Yet, the management of energy use in Korea remains lessthan desirable. 34% of energy produced daily, corresponding to the energy generated late at night, iswasted because this amount of unused energy is too hugeto be stored. Conversely, power plants cannot be switchedon and off easily, as they require even more energy to beswitched on again. Therefore power plants are always inoperation - 24 hours a day, for 365 days. As a result, many power plants simply let the electricity flow on theearth, and for this reason late night electricity is muchcheaper than usual. Electricity consumption patterns alsovary with the city zone. During office hours, most of theconsumption occurs downtown, at the CBD area. On thecontrary, the residential area takes up most of its energyat night and early in the morning.
of this project was to re-define the function of a car. Theprimary function of a car is transporting people, but withthe EV system, a car transporting people, but with theEV system, a car could possibly become a transporter of energy as well. Ituses energy to run, but since it can store energy, it canbe an energy carrier too (2.1). Millions of cars willbecome portable energy storage systems, bringingenergy to whichever destinations the drivers travel to.People can recharge their car with cheaper nightelectricity while they sleep, and use the electricity thenext day at their workplace (2.2). If you go to theshopping mall and park your car there, you will nolonger need to pay a parking fee. Instead, what you onlyneed to do is to contribute electricity from your car, andin exchange get a discount coupon. Besides, buildingslike the airport, stadium and convention centre are hugeenergy-draining places in the city (2.3). This situation, however, could be totally reversed with the EV system.Although more electricity is required where more peopleare gathered, more cars will also be present to provideelectricity. With this system, individual buildings can bemore self-sufficient in terms of energy.Possibilities lie everywhere. Factory workers could getfree rental of electric bikes from their company, and inturn the factory would have thousands of energy
UPSIDE DOWN_NEW ELECTRICITYNETWORK
What if your vehicle can capture this excess nightelectricity and discharge it to the buildings? The initial idea
Nonetheless, the Leaf is only the first trial model of itskind, and the technology of EV system continues todevelop at an incredibly fast rate. In 5 to 10 years’ time, owning an EV car will be a common thing for theaverage person (1.1). In turn, we now ask if architectureis ready for the EV Asystem? How will the EV systemchange our buildings and cityscape? This project will notbe an absolute answer to these questions, but it seeksto trigger and raise even more constructive questions, just as in the case of ‘Nissan Leaf’.
BAE, SANG HYUN 9594
sources. Shipping of vehicle exports will also bedifferent. As the ship has hundreds of fully chargedvehicles, these vehicles can now supply sufficient energyto cross the ocean.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE TO CURRENCY
So, how much energy is required, and how many carsare needed for that? The strength of the EV system liesin the fact that energy expenditure and hence thenumber of cars required for each space is calculated, which makes people more sensitive and meticulouswhen using electricity. At the moment, a vehicle’saverage travelling distance in Seoul is around 53km perday. Since the Nissan Leaf can travel up to 100km on afully charged battery, the energy available for
contribution to the building is about half of the battery’spower, which is about 11kWh. There are varying energyrequirements within different building programs in thecity. According to consumption surveys, the number ofparking lots can be allocated depending on the buildingprogram, to enable the building to become energy self-sufficient (3.2). Eventually, this is converted to an arearatio between program and parking space as illustratedabove.Currently parking area is usally exclusive to buildingusers. Other people are prevented from parking inbuildings, sometimes imposed with a costly parking fee, unless they patronize services within, only then wouldparking rebates be offered. With the EV system, parkingspace will become open to the public and companies willfind ways to attract vehicles to park in the buildinginstead, in order to get more energy.
PARKING_INTERFACE OF CAR TOBUILDING
Parking space is not just a mass of concrete anymore. Itis a platform through which vehicle and buildingexchange status information of themselves. Dependingon their conditions, vehicle can contribute energy to thebuilding or receive energy for recharging. Moreover, itcan exchange information with the building. Emptyparking lots can be easily detected and indicatedbecause of the interaction between car and building. When drivers park their cars in the lot, they can decidethe amount of energy to be discharged to the building, and according to this amount, they can be given
park with a relatively small program space. In using theEV system, the relationship between vehicles andbuildings will be changed. There will no longer be gasemission and noise. Consequently, car parks can now bemixed together with other programs, and people wouldnot mind vehicles running around indoor space (4.3).
SMART PLAZA _ MULTI-FUNCTIONAL
Furthermore, as parking space becomes smarter, it canbe very flexible and multi-functional. That is the idea of‘Smart Plaza’. It becomes a traffic node during peakperiods, and parking space during office hours. Afteroffice hours (or weekends), it transforms into a venue forsocial activities (4.2). For instance, a car theatre can beset up, where people watch movies by supplying energyfrom their vehicles. Sound will be provided within theirvehicles, so viewers can enjoy better sound quality whilecausing zero sound pollution to their neighbors. Thisopens up further opportunities for holding concerts ormedia performances.
available promotions such as a restaurant discount orshopping coupon. From the developer’s point of view, the car park will notbe a waste of space anymore. Obtaining energy from thecar park might even be more profitable than renting outoffices (4.2). Depending on the building program andamount of electricity needed, they could have a giant car
BAE, SANG HYUN 9796
LOCATION _ SEOUL STATION
Seoul station, it is the heart of Seoul and transportationhub of Korea. Because of express train and speed metroto Incheon international airport, passenger load of thestation is gradually increasing. Now it only takes lessthan 3 hours across north to south of Korea. People caneasily have a business meeting in the other cities andback to Seoul within office hours. However, compare toother major public service facility, Seoul station has verylimited parking space. The proposal is to provide enoughparking to the facility, attached restaurant and retailshops to be less dependant in terms of energy. Currentlythe station sited above the railway so there is limitationto develop underground of the building. And like othertrain station does, the railway separated local region. So the proposal provides linkage between the East andWest on top of the covered platform and also plaza for
social activities. With concept of the Smart plaza, it is theplace where vehicles gethering, where events happening, where people enjoying.
MASS DESIGN CONCEPT
Mass design development has two direction. One in thesite circumstance and the other one in the systematicapproach. Add up one more solid volume at the currentthree volume in the site and then multiple layers ofplane fill in the middle. The layers size is decied from theparking efficiency and the programs like retail store andrestaurent fill the gap between parking space afterdeformation.

This new generation of technology creates a hugeparadigm shift in the way we live and move in the city. Its arrival will impact companies and industries. For abetter sustainable life, the electric vehicle will beessential. The infrastructure of the EV system is definitelynot only providing a recharging point, as the possibilitiesare limitless. What is suggested in this project is a justsmall drop in the vast ocean of creative imaginations inresponse to the question, “Are we ready for the newtechnology, electric vehicle? What can we do in our citywith this system?”Importance of being SMART is not only about technologyand devices but also people. We forget most of the timewhere does the energy come from and how much wespend.
Now, drive out and contribute to the buildings. You willsee how much we WASTED.

NAKED SPA
Spa as community space near Seoul station
Most korean people used to go to public bath with mother when they are young. When they get
older, they used to go to public bath with father or friends on weekend.
Public bath is one of the usual life in korea.
Business people and housewives go to bath as where they can overcome fatigue and chat with
town people. Bath is the most friendly place to korean. Recently Public baths in town are
becoming extinct from emerging jjimjilbang.
JJimjilbang has become more complex and bigger as commercial space.
From this project, i want to expeperiment possibility of JJimjilbang which is made from korean
unique culture as real community space

Seoul staion convention center will be built by 2016. The site will be activated by public. So it needs more community space toaccept change. It takes 40 minutes to incheon airport from seoul station by airport train. Seoul station surrounded by seoul’s important downtown. It needs more spa as resting place and accomodation for business people and tourists.Seoul station will be change to center of city. Each side has different views which are train station and highrise buildings.
Now the site has commercial function but it is not vitalizeddespite it’s location. The site is located between Public area and commercial areawhich becomes highrise. And it is a obstacle to interruptbetween two areas because of thoughtless development. This site needs new role as community space with impotance ofaround the site. It is difficult to develop becase of thin width. It will be efficient to develop by merging lots.
The site confronts with seoul station’s green space. But It is disconnected by this green area. The building’s facade in the site only respond withroad side.It is needed to respond with station side visually.

‘Physical time’ is still exactly same, but Relative time is faster thanbefore.Everything changes and transfers quickly. People don’t get used to thisrapid change and there is no time to think at all. There is lesscommunication among people. Besides, development of architecture orcities is also influenced by the economic sense. It is unclear that changes are for whom. Dense building forestcomposed with apartment or shopping center and many electric signsthat are closely spaced over the dense buildings are the visible aspectsof cities we meet every day.People are exposed to noise of buses, subways and other people. Alsothere are no place to seat. Each apartment is eager to make their ownoasis. Place that can form public community becomes rare.
INTRO
#1In rush hour, Mr. A goes to his office by taking a subway line no.2 thatis crowded. Attached people listen to music and reading news paperseach other. Sometimes they are facing each other, but it has no mean.It is noisy but there is no conversation.
#2Many people enter the terminal rapidly. Bus time is coming. Onewoman has been waiting the bus for 40 minutes early. She closes hereyes listening music surrounded confused people. She imagines theplace to go 3 hours later.
IMAGINATION
The government made terminal because of the population distributionof Seoul and transporting people faster. It is political and also urbanplanning issue. First, a terminal is a just method of transporting peopleor something. People are only waiting for a person. Terminal space is speedy andcomplicated but has no communication in there. There are 5 bus terminals in Seoul now, it appears since 1970’s. Astime goes on, terminal is moving into another place because of thescale of it.Since 2000 year, it changes into complex including department store, hotel, and Movie Theater. Now, space of terminal is focused by developers in Seoul that has noplace to build anymore.
HISTORY OF TERMINAL
There is no space of taking a rest. People pass by each other rapidly incity of noise. Current developing plan is like putting the noisy city intothe complicated city. There are not community spaces in the city. Weneed to have a space of eye contact.Waiting room of terminal is not silent enough, but it is place ofthinking. Current terminal is place to transport and drop by, at thisshort moment, people feel comfortable. So many thoughts are passedby in the space of terminal, thoghts from people going for vacation, going to work or waiting for someone.
SUGGESTION
The East-Seoul bus terminal is nearby Han-River. Around here, there aremany residences. There are many Korean typical housing block(Apt.)and small housing type in here. Each block has a different house, but the boundary of it has acommercial building meeting the road.In the view of zooming out, normally, huge size of building makesboundary of different urban texture. Because it creates edges of densetexture of buildings and provide bold skyline. Terminal and Technomart has this kind of characteristic. People are coming here when they are going anywhere. And they arewaiting a bus or someone. The parking space is full of buses. Bus circulation is inefficient. Itdoesn’t have enough chairs as well. They should stand for waiting.
ENVIRONMENT
Terminal is like a portal (site). It can be a starting point for someone.Different thoughts are existent. There are many types of user in terminal.People wait for different times each other. Spaces for 5 minutes or1hour long using is included in terminal for meditation and thinking.

Today, the land of the East-Seoul terminal consists of 22,000sqm (73%use of land) area for parking and outdoor program. And 27% is full ofterminal building. Terminal is occupied by 1,200 buses and 30,000 to70,000 people per day in average. For over 20 years, terminal facilitiesare underdeveloped and have not enough places to seat and waitcompared to the number of users.Bus circulation is inefficient. Buses go into parking lot or departurespace after stop in arrival space and come out. And parking lots are fullof the buses and not used for people. Terminal looks like an islandbecause of wide parking lots, surrounding roads, and arrangement ofterminal building. People move into only arrival space and surroundingroads and parking spaces are abandoned.
SITE ANALYSIS
People from the subway use only 1st floor space of terminal. They buyticket and something to eat. And then, sitting down and watching TV.People who didn’t eat food enter restaurant. When the departure timeis coming, inside people are standing up to go departure space. Busesare disappearing.Observing gesture of waiting people, people are waiting 10 minutes to1 hour long. They are thinking and meditating idea of other city. Soterminal can change into thinking space or resting place?
Terminal is standing up like a wall.
PHENOMENON
#1 Terminal program is lifted up. One side terminal building canchange to be alive if terminal program spreads out all over theland.
#2 Bus circulation and outdoor program is under the waitingspace. Speedy bus circulation involve departure, arrival andmaintenance space. So waiting space can have large space. Itis efficient.
#3 Going up, space for meditating and thinking appears.
CONCEPT (SCENARIO)
Departure, Arrival, Maintenance, and Parking lots are efficient if it isone circulation. At ground level, car access and people circulationnaturally works. Indoor space mass of terminal is lifted up. People aregoing up to waiting space for ticketing and waiting.Because terminal mass has park and resting place, waiting spacemakes comfortable. People can go up silent place naturally. And theycan meditate in silent space before taking on the bus. For taking onthe bus they go down departure space.

LAYERS OF TIME
New urban development context in Hongdae
Can we remember a memory that we had experienced in the red brick house later? Instead of throwing
old and backward thing away, can it coexist in a state-of-the-art time together? I expect that a way that
past, present, and future coexists in a place may make our life more plentiful and valuable.

CIRCUMSTANCE OF SEOUL
Take a look at Seoul in year 2011. The city is full ofgorgeous high-rise buildings, beautiful squares and greenspaces are among them. The historical sites are alsopreserved owing to the government’s effort to revive thetraditional culture; the past, present, and future are trulyco-existing. Let’s look at another side of the city. Smallpoor houses are on the stiff heel of Oksu-Dong, and inHwoam-Dong the community is connected by seeminglyendless alley and pocket spaces occupied by ‘Joungja(i.e.Korean bungalow)’. The city used to be with all thesenarrow road and small spaces that link communities. These days, however, these are disappearing due to theurban re-development. This is Seoul as well.
Now the world is rapidly changing; everything becomesobsolete very fast. To have new things, old stuff has to begone. Sticking with old time memory is not exactly agood idea in this era of change.
My body of mine is covered by functional outfits and mysmart-phone is merely capable of everything. I drive astate-of-the-art car through the urban area. Sometimes, Ifeel like going to somewhere remind me of old and slowtime, where rough but raw emotion is preserved. One ofsuch places in Seoul is Hongdae area.
ALTERNATIVE DEVELOPMENT
Meanwhile, due to the Hapjeoung development and a riseof Hongdae’s value and prosperity, the urban territory ofHongdae would be extended more than now, however, which would be interrupted by the high-rise building andnew urban amenity already made. If so, in order to keepthe Hongdae’s own urban context, new layer which issimilar with the existing scale and condition could overlapthe old one. Also, a kind of transitional layer between theold and new layer would control development andpreservation there. In the end, one similar to Hongdaearea is to keep the context into the building. The overallsize and scale will be defined by the other scale that issimilar to Hapjeong area. These two keeps one’s owntime and urban structure, yet shares the same purpose ofcreating new spatial quality. The communication betweenthem will establish new kind of urban development thatkeeps the old things together.
Small scale masses will be stacked on the site and willcreate a big yet porous complex of mass. The voidsamong them will make the building contrary to othersimilar size buildings. This void space will create road thatconnects not only inside and outside, but also each smallspaces of various programs such as boutique, gallery cafe, craft studio and alternative housing for young artist. Thisvoid will become bridge, stairs, ramp and atrium amongthe splited and dispersed masses. These will make thesmall spaces ‘separate but together’. This will becomevery similar to the one could be found in urban area. Thisnew kind of architecture will provide people withabundant space and humane relationship like communityor association only here.
POTENTIAL PREDICTION
The 1970-80s old housing is not good architecturebecause it was built just for occupying lots of people whomoved to this city at once, which spreaded every Seoulwithout regulation and rule. For that reason, it has beenthrown away and replaced by new apartment in recentdays under the ‘New town’ designated by the governmenteverywhere. In this current flow, we have been lost a partof our history rapidly. Approximately a couple of decadeslater Hongdae could be the only area we can see the redbrick housing because the government designates is asthe third culture district and plans to preserve thiscontext. I ain’t insisting that it should be preserved, justhope to postpone the development and let us see and
feel that time goes by. Also, the alley and architecturewithin human perception could provide abundant spaceand relation like community or association, which peoplesee only here.
In common development starts on the ground with newthing, but it could do on the middle with coexisting oldand new one. It could be an appropriate way for leadingHongdae to be developed with keeping this identitycontinually.

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS OF HONGDAE
‘Hongdae cultural district’ has its own identity amongstSeoul. This was undeveloped area in 1970s. This placebecame full of rich and creative culture thanks to youngartists. There are not only commercial spaces, but alsocultural spaces such as boutique, gallery, small concert
hall, indi-theater and design studio. Along the mainstreets, there is lots of well-designed architecture. Behindthem, various buildings which has unique style could befound. These small buildings are originally houses andredeveloped into small spaces to accommodate suchvarious programs. All these are creating the specialambience of Hongdae area and this is why people, regardless of sex and age, love the area. This unique andvintage atmosphere defines the architectural style of thearea and this kind of co-existence could be a workingsolution for the city, Seoul where most old thing are beingdemolished.
Hongdae area is located nearby the Hapjeoung station.According to the city regulation, it is classified as thesecond kind of residential zone. This enables the housingsturning into small retail spaces. Mostly, the buildings havetwo to three story, each block is divided by small roadmeant for vehicles and pedestrians. As compared to otherpart of Seoul, the atmosphere isopen and loose; peoplecan enjoy walking and looking around with pleasure.Owing to the context, Hongdae should be developeddifferently, not like other part of Seoul. Therefore, I wouldlike to suggest a different way of development that fitsthis local context.
In neighborhood of Hapjeong station, a large urbandevelopment named ‘Hapjeong distict development’ isgoing on under the government’s lead. This area is acentral transportation node and has easy access to Hanriver and famous green space. The area is also very closeto some universities. Due to these reasons, high-risebuildings and well-arranged urban amenities are plannedhere. In the near future, this place will become a so-called ‘the newest city’ surrounding the Hongdae area.

DESIGN STRATEGY
Once developed the project, these three strategies are considered as important keywords and main concept. Through them, concept or goal became clearand plentiful space is created.
Starting from the existing level on the ground we can see in common, the project leads to the conceptrelated to accumulation of layers of which era and program is differnt. On the aspect of solving theproblem at the existing urban fabric, the old one can be revised and renovated and become morepriceless in this era due to the historical value. Then, new layer including advantage of the old urbanfabric can be more valuable and special than common developed condition. Also, underground leveland transitional level have each function and character here. In the end, the block pocesses varioustime, program, character, and story at once.

As compared with mega-scale building, the existingurban fabric has splited and narrow inbetweenspace in a block. It can be seen potential alleywhich works as passage, circulation, or pocketsquare. In order to activate the existing level andmake relation among layers, it has various typesof architectural device.
Since the architecture is created by accumulation, overall, old and old, old and new, or new and new layers have vertical relation. From setting new slab on theexisting context to small-scaled architectural device, every part is developed through sectional composition. First, new slab becomes laid depending on the connection whether it is attached directly or detached from the existing with considering natural sunlightpassage, circulation, and value of preservation. Next, program is orgarnized by vertical relation. Similar programs have commection, especially, spaces whichhave meaning of plaza is linked continually, and alternative residence has vertically private and public difference with sharing normal life pattern. Last, whilerenovating or activating dead space such as half-underground level or abandoned inbetween space, various extention or combination occurs and makes variousand interesting multi-purpose space here.

Urban farm in Nowon resource recovery
In the apartment forest, urban farm can supply food and green space to residents. There are only obligatory
parks in the apartment forest, so we would like to suggest experiential and productive green community. And
we should co-exist with public service facilities like incineration plant in urban city. Furthemore using waste
energy from crematory, we can reduce energy consumption. Therefore suggesting urban farm in Nowon
resource facility can be valuable.

Seoul’s population is 10,464,000(2009) that occupying 20.1% of South Korean population. In Seoul,Songpa-gu’s population(676,580) is highest and Nowon-gu(620,808) is second district. Also, Seoul has1,217,308 apartments and Nowon is most district that has 158,129 apartments. Compared with second andthird district, Gangnam(113,884) and Songpa(109,789), Nowon’s apartments are extremely high.
Nowon resource recovery is incineration plant of this district. In the site, there is Nowon youth center thatincluding pool, health club and auditorium. Also there is education center that can learn by observation.Next to the site, there is Combined heat and power plant that supply heating energy to residents. Betweenthe site and Joongrang stream, there is dongbu expressway that having a lot of traffic.
On the other hand, there are many trashes in urban life. However, people are hate unpleasant facilities like crematory near their apartment.Site is Nowon resource recovery located in apartment forest but it is like lonely island in urban city.
Public service facility for residents is consideredunpleasant facility that they avoid. However, actually, these facilities are not damage to them.

ANALYSIS
ISSUE.

Lower space renovation with plan for pedestrian jam
in Gang-nam station Exit No.3

Me-ism space service ; The curious incident of M-space in Sinchon
Issue & Theme

Do you know Sony Walkman?

URBAN NARRATION

I’d like to adjust features of back alley in jong no.( actually it is hidden, some people even don’t know its existence). At a time I also want to reflect current memory, as a hidden park. So I give borad-none barrier space on the ground floor which anyone can stay in comfort.

INFRA STRUCTURE - HUB
How can the structure of existing urban areas play a strong role?

David Harvey

when I conducted site-analysis,
I found two things in my site,
continuous slope and wide forest
on the west-side. So I focoused on
these two things.
1. Using natural (eco-friendly material)
First, I cut this slope and re-use this soil as Rammed-earth wall. so this eco-friendly materialbecome the wall of 1st floor.
2 Expansion of forest (Green zone)
Second, I intended to expand the forest to my building. I inspired by the physical properties of tree. For example, air and light can penetrate through so many tiny gaps between leaves and branches. I wanted to introduce that kind of concept in my building.
These programs have various connections with this continuous Green-zone. some fruits or herbs made in production garden may use in cafeteria. And another garden can be experience-study space for teenagers. and the space between upper and under mass will be bare-foot experience zone

As a architect, what can we dTo for nature? Of course, designing building in sustainable way is very important but that’s not enough.
We have to make teenagers to un derstand the relationship between nature and us.
So I approached this project in two ways.

The population on the earth is increasing constantly so we are makingcities without a break. In the future, there will be serious lack of landto cultivate. What can we do?
Think about Vertical Farm. It can be the bestsolution for lack of land. We have enoughtechnology to control farming in a building.
Experience in vertical farm will be helpful for teenagers to understandnature especially plants and they can have the solution for pollutionproblems that will occur in the future.
