DESCRIPTION The incidence of liver cancer is rising worldwide and in the U.S. mostly due to the concomitant rise in hepatitis C viral infection. Because liver cancer occurs in the background of cirrhosis, preservation of healthy liver tissue is critically important. Liver cancer arising from the hepatocytes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a propensity to stay confined to the liver until late in the disease. Loco‐regional therapies have played a major role in the management of patients with liver cancer. This activity will include review of the most commonly used therapies, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Its safety and efficacy have been proven and TACE has been included in all the major guidelines for the treatment of patients with HCC (AASLD, EASL, NCCN). However, technical differences on how to perform TACE persist. We have developed a protocol at Johns Hopkins that would help standardize the procedure. The workshop will provide practical information on how to perform TACE using current sophisticated imaging technology. The hands on program will teach the participants how to use the equipment and become familiar with the capabilities of a newer less evasive technique with cone beam CT imaging.
OBJECTIVES After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to: • Identify how drug eluting beads DEB‐TACE differs from conventional TACE. •Define the technical aspects of DEB‐TACE. •integrate cone beam CT imaging with DEB‐TACE. •Summarize the benefits of using cone beam CT imaging during DEB‐TACE procedures. •Describe how cone beam CT imaging allows for better visualization and targeting of tumors and assessment of tumor response.
TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is intended for interventional radiologists who utilize loco‐regional therapies to treat liver cancer.
