EDITOR'S PREFACE
Geshe Dr. Lobsang Dargyay ' s concise biography of Gun than is an
experiment. It aims at reviving the traditional Tibetan "art"
of biographical writing by fulfilling a major prerequisite of
"Western" scholarship that is usually lacking in traditional
accounts: not only mentioning but also properly identifying
the sources available in such a way that the information
gathered can be traced and controlled by the reader too. The
Geshefs description of Gun than!s life is a representative
piece of traditional Tibetan scholarship, following as it
does the life of Gun than along the lines drawn by himself
in the beautifully concentrated verses taken from his auto-
biography. At the same,time the Geshe presents all the in-
formation collected with'a clear and detailed indication of
his sources. This makes for a simple, but methodologically
important difference from traditional Tibetan biographies
and similar historical writings. And it also means, I hope,
that the Geshe' s biography of Gun than can be accepted by
the modern scholar as useful, since in fact it is a histori-
cal essay by a traditional Tibetan scholar meeting one of
the major requirements of modern Tibetology.
The bibliography of Gun than f s numerous works added to this
biography tries to make use of the extant information with
regard to the time and place of composition, in .order to
present these works in a chronological sequence as far as
possible. For a philological study of a particular work, and
an evaluation of the literary and spiritual development of
the author, a clear knowledge of the possibilities of literary
dependancy can be useful and important. To give up the ar-
rangement of his works in the gSun f bum for the sake of an

- at least partly possible - chronological sequence, is also
a new feature for traditional Tibetan scholarship.
It is the editor' s hope that biographies like the one pre-
sented here, with a clear description of the sources of in-
formation, could be written by other Tibetan scholars, too.
It is only in this way that a considerable number of reliable
biographical data on persons important for the shaping of
traditional Tibet can gradually be gathered.
