Huis Kombuis near Wellington. The quirky mixof vintagedecor, the roaring log fireand invitingaromaswafting through from the kitchen immediately lifted my spirits. Situated in a renovated
farm shed at the popular function venue Kleinevalleij, I found the downtoearth approach ofFesta’s managing team, Hannes and Tina Maritz, original and refreshing. With the hunting season well under way, ma
ny of us have ended up with game generouslydonated by husbands, uncles or friends. In mycase a leg of springbok was handed over asa gift of some weight and significance, and Irealised I should feel extremely privileged. Unfortunately I had no idea how to cook it andjust stuffed it into the freezer. So imagine my delight when author, TV pre

TheWalker Bay 4x4 Ecological Society hasgone from strength to strength over the last15years. Startedbyagroupof locals from
Hermanus, the club now boasts 36 membersfrom all over the Western Cape, who are oftenjoinedby theirwivesandchildrenon the varioustrips planned through out the year.Thesevary fromoneday trainingcoursesand
weekend expeditions to longer trips into thewilderness. Lastmonthweventured intoPondolandand the TranskeiWild Coast on a 10day expedition. Most of thememberswere accompaniedby their wives in eight 4x4 vehicles. At Keimondthe pont transported us across the Kei River, andfrom there it was rough dirt tracks all the wayto Morgan Bay, DoubleMouth, Marsh Beach,HoleintheWall, Coffee Bay and the HlulekaNature Reserve.Theweatherwasgreatandwewereevenable
to enjoy swimming in the warm ocean. The newchalets where we spent the night were also apleasant surprise and the scenery spectacular. The next day we travelled to Luphuthana via
Port St Johns and Lusikisiki. We were notwarned that one cannot travel by vehicle to thetent camp, where we had made a reservation. In the late afternoon at high tide we found our
selves stranded with a river between us and thecamp on the opposite side. Fortunately therewas an ancient Milkwood forest nearby wherewe perforce set up camp for the night. On our route we also visited the Magwa tea
plantation, the Magwa waterfall and the Angelwaterfall. The Magwa Falls drop 104 m into akloof with perpendicular cliffs and there are nobarricades to protect one from the precipice.Other highlights included theWaterfall Bluff,
a waterfall that drops directly into the sea, andCathedral Rock. We made use of a guide andhad to take a 12 km hike to reach these impressive natural attractions. There are several campsmanagedbyDrifters
in the area, and we also stayed over at theirLambazi camp near Port Grosvenor (alsoknown as the Drifters Wild Coast Lodge) andthe Msikaba adventure camp. En route, between Lambazi and Msikaba, there is a largeCape vulture colony that lives and breeds in thehigh rockface of the Mtentu River. It was an unforgettable experience to see
these vultures swooping down from greatheights, and encouraging too, to see so manychicks. It is estimated that there are more than250 birds in this colony alone. The Cape vulture(or Cape griffon) is a vulnerable species thatis only found in three places in South Africa.
AtMsikaba some of themembers went hikingin theMkhambathiNatureReserve, whileotherspartook inaraftingexpeditiondown thebreathtaking Mtentu River, with its steep cliffs and richplant and bird life. After the group turned south, we also paid
visit toCollywobbles,MbotyiandDwesaNatureReserve, awellkept secretwithbeautiful indigenous forests and an unspoilt coastline. The club is currently touring the Kaokoveld
in northern Namibia, and other expeditions onthe calendar include a weekend trip to Calitzdorp in September to experience the SwartbergPassandMeiringspoort, followedbyBeaver Lacand the chance to explore the WinterhoekMountains near Porterville in November.TheWalker Bay4x4Ecological Society caters

Maritz.
Dié twee is in Februarie getroud (by Festa)
DiegebouwaarinFesta is,waseers ’nplaas
stoor.
WAAROM moet jy soontoe gaan?Festa is ’n unieke bestemming.

Gestopte wildsboudUit: Die Groot Boerekosboek
BESTANDDELE1 wildsboudjie250 ml (1 k) water30 ml (2 E) asyn200 g spek15 ml (1 E) fyn sout2,5 ml (¼ t) rissiepoeier10 ml (2 t) gemmerpoeiermeelblom60 ml (¼ k) kookolie125 ml (½ k) kookwater
MARINADE15 ml (1 E) grofgemaalde koljander5 heel kruinaeltjies1,25 ml (¼ t of raspertjie) neutmuskaat5 ml (1 t) sout2,5 ml (½ t) varsgemaalde swartpeper15 ml (1 E) bruinsuiker125 ml (½ k) bruin druiweasyn250 ml (1 k) kookwater
Steek ’n toetspen in. As daar donkerrooi sous uitkom, is die vleis nog rou; as dit pienkerigis, is dit medium, terwyl ’n geel kleur beteken dit is heeltemal gaar. As daar geen sousuitkom nie, is jy in jou kanon in.
Werk so proeproe. Gooi portwynby vir ’n ekstra soetigheidjie.
