Discover the diverse nature and rich spiritual history of the Kii Peninsula, from soaring mountains and deep valleys to the beautiful southern seascapes warmed by the Kuroshio CurrentYoshino-Kumano National Park is a an astoundingly diverse landscape of mountains, deep valleys and coastal areas. Discover the Omine Mountains, referred to as the “roof” of the Kinki region, running north to south through the middle of the Kii Peninsula; Odaigahara Plateau and Osugidani Valley to the east; and the Kumano River and middle to lower reaches of the Kitayama River, which originate high in the mountains, carving their way through the land as they rush to the Kumano-nada Sea. Explore the main island of Honshu’s southernmost coastline overlooking the Kumano-nada Sea that stretches from Owase to Cape Shionomisaki and Mt. Nachi and neighboring mountains, protected since ancient times by Kumano Shinko spiritual beliefs. Within the park, you will find a World Heritage Site—Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, while in the north, a registered UNESCO Biosphere Reserve seeks to harmonize conservation efforts with sustainable usage. Finally, spanning Nara and Wakayama Prefectures is Nanki Kumano Geopark, a certified Japanese geopark and the gateway to uncover the national park’s geological wonders.

Kumano-Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine, one of the Nachisan Seigantoji Temple and the Kumano Sanzan, is revered as sacred ground in Kumano Shinko, the faith dedicated to the mountains of Kumano. Kumano Shinko began as a form of nature worship that believed that gods inhabit waterfalls, rivers and boulders. Since antiquity, people have made the sacred pilgrimage here. This course follows the stone-paved path of Daimonzaka to the shrine and Nachi Waterfall. Enjoy the easy-to-walk path and the incredible atmosphere of the Kumano Kodo road, where moss covers stone stairways and ancient Japanese cedar trees tower overhead.

The many levels of this waterfall carry on for a vertical drop of over 120 meters. It has been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls.
This pass consists of a vast hill covered in fallen trees and withered bushes. In the distance, the Kumano-nada Sea comes into view.
At 135 meters, this waterfall boasts Osugidani Valley's longest drop.
A huge amount of water plunges over this waterfall into the large, deep pool below. From here, the route steepens sharply.
A towering wall of rock
Most years see rhododendrons bloom from around mid-May to early June.
Below you, the cliff face extends 800 meters straight down, while in front of you, a vast panorama of the surrounding mountains and valleys, including Mt. Misen and Mt. Shakka, can be admired.
Sheer cliffs and the beautiful Nikoniko Waterfall make for fantastical scenery.
Established approximately 80 years ago, this is the Kansai area's largest mountain hut. Its point of pride is its bath made of hinoki cypress.
