An area in space where another magnet or

ferromagnetic substance experiences a force without any contact.

Magnetic field

The motion of an e- around an atom’s

nucleus causes an electric current.

This current causes a magnetic field at

the center of the electrons’ path.

Each atom behaves like a small magnet.

Small groups of atoms group together in a

substance, with their magnetic fields pointing in the same direction.

Domain

Poles of a permanent magnet

Once all the domains are aligned, you

have a magnet with 2 poles: North and

South. No matter the arrangement of the poles, if two like poles face each other, they will repel. If two unlike poles face each other, they will attract.

Magnetic fields surround the entire magnet.

Is strongest at the poles. On a microscopic level, a magnetic

field is the motion of charges.

The magnetic field is invisible. We use iron filings or compasses to indicate the magnetic field, which is arranged in lines around

the magnet – these are called magnetic field lines.

Properties of magnetic field lines:

• Imaginary• Three dimensional• Never touch or cross• Indicate the force on the N pole,

so point from N to S, indicated by arrows.

• Closer/more field lines indicate a stronger magnetic field.
