• “Islam” literally means “surrender; submission” signifying an external manifestation of one’s inner conviction towards “obedience to the will of Allah”.

• The true meaning of “believe” or “iiman” is :

“to be convinced in one’s heart/mind (Qolb); and declare with one’s tongue, and practice deeds in accordance with its pillars”

• So “how does one begin to submit to Allah’s will”?

This was succinctly enumerated by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. In what is referred to as the Pillar of Islam (Arkaan-ul-Islaam).

• As believe or conviction resides in a person’s heart, there is a need to first express ones’ commitment verbally – declaring it to others such that it becomes a solemn pledge or a promise, as well as a sign of one’s entrance into a social & spiritual contract with the universal community as Muslim.

9

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

What is - What is - َال!م َال!ماِأل%ْس# ? ”? ”ISLAMISLAM“ -“ -اِأل%ْس#

• So, the gateway into Islam is simple. Yet, this entrance – verbal declaration - leads to a whole program to be implemented so as to ‘build’ a truly Muslim personality of one who submits his whole-self to the Will of the Creator.

• Thus, the five pillars must be regarded as that educational/developmental program to nurture a personality.

11

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

What is - What is - َال!م َال!ماِأل%ْس# ? ”? ”ISLAMISLAM“ -“ -اِأل%ْس#

• Each of these five pillars, contains the medium through which the deeper meanings must impact a Muslim – leading to yet higher consciousness of how to transform his entire life into one of complete submission to the Will of Allah. For to be a Muslim is about “being” and “becoming”. It’s about ‘haal’ (spiritual state) and ‘maqom’ (station).

12

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

What is - What is - َال!م َال!ماِأل%ْس# ? ”? ”ISLAMISLAM“ -“ -اِأل%ْس#

• For to submit to Allah is to be in the presence with every witnesses of the Truth of the Lordship and Sovereignty of the One and only God – Allah, Who Alone is Deity worthy of worship; upholding and standing firm with justice, in accordance with the Way as established by His Final Messenger Muhammad s.a.w.

What is - What is - َال!م َال!ماِأل%ْس# ? ”? ”ISLAMISLAM“ -“ -اِأل%ْس#

• As these five pillars are inter-related, beginning with a solemn commitment, a Muslim is to strive to fulfil all these – as these are to be regarded as a Fardh ‘Ain (a personal obligation) unto those who enter into Islam:

““O ye who believe! enter into Islam whole-heartedly (fully); O ye who believe! enter into Islam whole-heartedly (fully); and follow not the footsteps of the Evil One; for he is to and follow not the footsteps of the Evil One; for he is to you an avowed enemy.”you an avowed enemy.”

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DECLARATIONDECLARATION

• No one should be forced to embrace Islam. A person enters into it willingly, with full certainty of the truth that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.

• Those who are born into a Muslim family needs to be nurtured with the correct understanding of Islam to attain certainty .24

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DECLARATIONDECLARATION

• Thus, the declaration marks a person’s commitment towards adhering to all that Islam teaches.

25

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DECLARATIONDECLARATION

• Thus, the declaration marks a person’s commitment towards adhering to all that Islam teaches.

• It is in fact a covenant between him and Allah – to be witnessed at least by other Muslims because he will be accorded every rights and respect as fellow Muslims; as much as other Muslims have rights over him.

26

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DECLARATIONDECLARATION

• Amongst these are for Muslims to exhort one another towards truth and patient constancy; making du’a for one another; protecting each others rights and dignity; assisting in all matters leading to al-Birr (Goodness) and al-Taqwa (consciousness of Allah) with love for one another for the sake of Allah.

27

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DECLARATIONDECLARATION

• When a person enters or embraces Islam, his/her past sins are forgiven and erased whereas record of their good deeds remains. This is similar to Muslims whose repentance have been accepted by Allah.
