“William Shakespeare was my boyfriend.”
Elizabeth I is considered one of the most popular monarchs of England. She was born in 1533 and died in 1603. She came to the throne in 1558, six years before Shakespeare was born. She became queen when she was 25 years old. Her mother was Anne Boleyn and her father was Henry VIII. When Elizabeth was only two years old her mother was beheaded at the Tower of London.
Elizabeth received a formal education. This was very unusual for her time because girls did not go to school. Elizabeth studied subjects such as mathematics, history, geography and astronomy.
She was a very special queen. She was very clever and was very good at public speaking. She was very talented and could speak several languages. She loved sports especially riding and hunting. She also loved to dance, play musical instruments and the theatre. Shakespeare´s theatre group performed for her. She watched two of Shakespeare ´s plays, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Love Labor´s Lost. Many of Shakespeare´s plays were not written until after her death.
Elizabeth was queen of England for 45 years. Although she never married, she had many suitors. The Earl of Leicester was his favourite one. It is said that when she died she was holding his last letter.
