Sadness is DOWN.

Let down the sails

Sorry I let you down.

Hey, I let you down, all right? I get it.

Excuse me? You let me down? I don't care!

Let me make one thing clear to you, I am not your father! You are not my friend. This is a business.

You are only as good to me as the money you make, and, right now, it's not worth a hell of a lot!

Let Down vs Disappoint

Don't expect too much from people. The less you expect,

the less disappointed you will be when they let you down.

'I won't let you down' is more of a peer usage,

Disappointed is more along the lines of expectations that haven't been met while let down refers more to promises.

Let Down vs Disappoint

Let down is for when you rely on something or someone to do something and they fail to do so.

I may be disappointed if my hopes, rather than my expectations, are not realised.

Janet was extremely disappointed / let down when she got her test results.

Her parents felt disappointed / let down when she didn't show up for the interview they had arranged for her.

Everyone was disappointed at / let down by the jury's verdict.

I was disappointed / let down by the performance of the new engine.
