Living in the Desert

• For thousands of years, Native Americans have lived in this area. They are known

as “Desert People.”

• Around 1690, Spanish explorers claimed this land and much more land in North

America. They called it Mexico.

• In 1692, Tuscon got its name from a Spanish man named Father Kino. He

built a mission.

• The Spanish wanted the Native Americans to learn the Catholic religion.

• Spain ruled Tucson until Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821.

• In 1854, the United States bought the land around Tucson from Mexico, making

Tucson and American town.
