Climate Change and Poverty and Climate Change and Partnership: Report from break-out sessions
Conclusions – Climate Change and Poverty
www.scienceforum2016.org
1. Climate change and poverty relationships are under-researched: Empirical evidence still weak; studies focused on vulnerability,
productivity and not linkages with poverty Little attention to post-production processes Focus on extreme events but not in a comprehensive approach that
examines both impacts of extremes and of longer-term changes and social inclusion for transformational adaptation
2. Next steps (research needs): Detailed livelihood studies that consider agrobiodiversity, value
chains, off-farm income, migration, gender & social differentiationHow to increase resilience to CC through integration of indigenous
and scientific knowledge and successful adaptation modelsHow to identify maladaptation early and deal with trade-offs Examine opportunities for livelihood enhancement under climate
change – and understand the role of networks
Conclusions: Climate change and partnerships
www.scienceforum2016.org
1. Partnership models Partnerships are universally recognised as important, but actual partnerships
are often far from ideal All partners need to understand the complexity of the problem, understand
their roles in working together, and have common purpose Complementarity amongst partners is key; and there must be sufficient
incentives to drive the partnerships
2. Next steps to develop partnerships for scaling up Avoid token partnerships and token partnership processes Have a good conceptual framework and understand the context for the
partnership E.g. Use value chain approach to identify key actors Define clear roles of different partners Understanding incentives and power relations for effective partnerships
Use multi-stakeholder platforms to engage different actors (inc. Across scaleswhere needed)
Invest in communication, and empower communicators
