Hemkund Sahib (4,632m/15,200ft)
Hemkund, a glacial lake surrounded by seven peaks, is located in the Garhwal Himalayas at an elevation of over 15,200 ft (4,632 m) in Uttarakhand and accessible only by foot from Govindghat on the Rishikesh – Badrinathhighway. It is most known for a gurudwara, Hemkund Sahib, associated to the Sikh guru, Guru Govind Singh, and is one of the most sacred of Sikh shrines.
Badrinath (3,415m/11,204ft)
Cradled in the twin mountain ranges of Nar and Narayan along the left bank river Alaknanda, with the splendid Neelkanth mountain as the backdrop, is the holiest of the ‘Char Dham’ shrines. Legend dates it prior to the Vedic age though it was re‐established by Adi Shankaracharya, an important Hindu saint in 8th century A.D. As per ancient scriptures "There are many sacred spots of pilgrimage in the heavens, earth and the nether world, but there has been none equal to ‘Badri’, nor shall there be".
