The lunar (Chinese) new year is celebrated throughout East Asia and in much of Southeast Asia. Many of these countries with significant Asian communities would sometimes recognize the importance of this holiday for their citizen by issuing new Lunar New Year stamps.2011 Lunar New Year happens to be the year of rabbit, so the post office issued rabbit symbol stamps.

The U.S. Postal Service has found lunar new year stamps to be a highly profitable enterprise, in part because so many of the stamps are purchased by collectors and are never used to send mail.
