Communication Skills!

Why Communication Skills are Important?

Quotes to ponder upon!“Constantly talking isn't necessarily communicating.” Charlie Kaufman

“It’s important to make sure that we’re talking with each other in a way that heals, not in a

way that wounds." - Barack Obama, 44th U.S. President”

Do we really need to improve our communication?

• Sometimes, it is a situation or problem that makes communication difficult and so the things we know about great communication fall apart.

• Much of what we try to communicate to others and what others try to communicate to us, gets misunderstood, causing conflict and frustration in personal and professional relationships.

Purpose of Communication

To get your message across others clearly and unambiguously

• Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation and enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection and caring can flourish.

What is effective communication?

• Process of sharing information where sender sends a message that is easily interpreted by the receiver.

• Effective communication combines a set of skills including nonverbal communication, attentive listening, the ability to manage stress, and the capacity to recognize and understand your own emotions and those of the person you are communicating with.

Communication is a great toolIt helps to get things done and helps building

relationships

But We are facing a disconnect with other people in

our homes, organizations and society. Let’s revamp a change in our routine and plant

the seeds for good communication.

Three Easy Ways to Improve Your Communication in Daily Routine

Task 1:• Get out of your room and stop using email or

IM (Instant Messaging) as your primary methods of communication.

• Meet friends, family or colleagues and start interacting. (Prefer to communicate in English for improving language)

• Break the ice and open the door for future communication.

Task 2:

• Listen more than talking (its tough to listen with your mouth).

• Avoid verbal vomit syndrome (constantly talking unnecessarily). Ask relevant questions and then carefully listen to the answers.

Task 3:

• Make face to face communication part of your daily routine.

• Spare time to engage your colleagues, friends or family in communication.

• Invite someone for tea, coffee or lunch and have chat on any topic of your choice.

Remember: Leave your cell phone aside once you start to communicate, as it leads to distraction.

“When we change the way we communicate, we change society”

Clay Shirky
