MISSION AND PURPOSEThe Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council is a non-profit association consisting of companiesand organizations that deliver video, Internet, voice services and emerging applications overhigh-bandwidth, next-generation, direct fiber optic connections as well as those involved inplanning and building FTTH networks. Our mission is to educate the public and governmentofficials about the benefits of FTTH solutions and to promote and accelerate deployment offiber to the home and the resulting quality of life enhancements. Our objectives are to supply a consistent and accurate view of FTTH, promote FTTH marketdevelopment, and serve as the premier resource for information on fiber to the home.FTTH COUNCIL MOST RECENT YEAR IN REVIEWOctober 27, 2010In the Final Accounting, FTTH Gets Most of Rural Broadband StimulusMore than half the broadband projects supported by the U.S. Department of Agricultures rural broadbandstimulus program and nearly two-thirds of the programs loan and grant money were awarded to projects thatinvolved building or expanding fiber to the premises networks, according to the Fiber to the Home CouncilNorth America. In a final project list issued last week by the USDA on its American Recovery and ReinvestmentAct (ARRA) funding, the departments Rural Utilities Service (RUS) reported that its Broadband InitiativesProgram (BIP) awarded $3.5 billion in loans and grants to 297 broadband infrastructure projects to extend thebenefits of broadband to rural communities.December 21st, 2010Fiber-to-the-Home Council Reacts to FCC Vote on Internet AccessDaniel OConnell, President of the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council: "With todays vote to adopt openinternet access rules, the FCC appears to have constructed a temporary truce, striking a rough balancebetween the interests of users and broadband providers. While the Fiber-to-the-Home Council will reservefurther comment pending a detailed understanding of the Order and its implications for our members, we arehopeful that the Commission and other policymakers will now turn their full attention to fostering investmentand innovation in the telecommunications and broadband industries. Americans are clamoring for high-performance, next-generation broadband so that they can access the emerging services and applications thatare so critical to their economic future and quality of life." FTTH Council North America About the FTTH Council September 20113 12. February 13, 2011FTTH Operators to Present Best Practices at Council WorkshopThe Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council will convene a workshop March 16 in Nashville focusing on bestpractices of telecommunications service providers that are operating FTTH networks. The latest in the FTTHCouncils series of "hot topic" workshops, which are open to the public, will take place at the Gaylord OprylandResort and Convention Center. Under the banner of Lighting the Way to FTTH Profitability: From Concept tothe Customer, the workshop agenda includes a full day of presentations, panel discussions and audienceparticipation featuring number of independent telecoms and public electric utilities - from Tennessee andbordering states - discussing their experiences in deploying all-fiber networks.April 14, 2011Council Report Says FTTH Stimulus Projects Now Moving ForwardThree-quarters of the broadband stimulus-funded projects to create or expand all-fiber networks have nowbroken ground or are on the verge of doing so, according to a survey report issued today by the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council. The report, prepared for the Council by the market analyst firm RVA LLC, estimates that construction hasbegun on 38 percent of the fiber to the home projects funded by the American Recovery and ReinvestmentAct, while another 36 percent are actively preparing for construction to begin. Most of the remaining projectsare in some stage of engineering or environmental impact evaluation.May 19, 2011St. Louis FTTH Workshop to Feature KC-Area Business Leader on Google Fiber ProjectThe President of the Kansas City (KS) Chamber of Commerce will discuss the potential economic impact of thecitys upcoming Google fiber network at a day-long broadband workshop hosted by the Fiber-to-the-Home(FTTH) Council on Wednesday, June 8, at the St. Louis Hilton Frontenac in St. Louis, Missouri. The latest in theFTTH Councils series of "hot topic" workshops will feature a keynote address by Chamber president CindyCash, whose community was selected by Google from more than 1,000 applications to be the site for thecompanys first 1 gigabit per second experimental fiber to the home network. This week, Google announcedthat it will expand its project across the Missouri River and into Kansas City, MO, a city of 450,000.May 23, 2011FTTH Council Urges FCC to Preserve "High Cost Fund" to Keep Rural High-Speed Broadband onTrackSays average broadband users will need 25 Mbps connections within five years. Maintaining the High-Costuniversal service fund is critical to ensuring that the nations broadband universal service goals are achieved, according to a document filed today with the Federal Communications Commission by the Fiber-to-the-HomeCouncil, a non-profit organization that advocates for the expansion of next-generation broadband. TheCommission is considering severely reducing the High-Cost portion of the Universal Service Fund that supportsrural carriers who currently provide broadband services in high-cost areas. It would be replaced with a ConnectAmerica Fund (CAF), the aim of which would be to bring broadband to only unserved areas at a level ofbandwidth that is generally below what is available in most urban and suburban communities - with a standardof about 4 megabits per second for download and 1 megabit for uploading.June 15, 2011Survey Indicates FTTH Leads Other Broadband Services in Bandwidth Value, ConsumerSatisfactionSubscribers to fiber to the home (FTTH) services get considerably more bandwidth for the buck than thosewho receive their Internet and video services through cable or DSL, according to a new report commissionedby the Fiber-to-the-Home Council. The survey of more than 2,000 broadband subscribers, drawn randomlyfrom a nationally balanced panel of more than 3.2 million consumers by the market research firm RVA LLC, alsofound that overall satisfaction among FTTH users continues to lead that of other broadband subscribers, withthose answering "very satisfied" at 74 percent - up from 71 percent a year ago - compared to 54 percent forcable users and 51 percent for DSL. FTTH Council North America About the FTTH Council September 2011 4 13. July 29, 2011FTTH Council Reacts to Telecoms Proposal for USF ReformThe Fiber-to-the-Home Council today issued a statement from its President, Daniel OConnell, in reaction to aUniversal Service Fund reform plan submitted to the FCC by six telecommunications companies: The Fiber-to-the-Home Council recognizes the importance of reforming the universal service regime and supports efforts ofthe industry to coalesce on a plan to achieve this objective. As this process moves forward, we believe acritical objective should be a USF program that strongly encourages rural service providers to invest in next-generation networks. The link between the availability of high-performance broadband services and localeconomic development has never been more obvious, and USF is critical to ensuring that rural communities areable to compete, grow and prosper in the 21st century. August 2, 2011FTTH Networks Lead the Pack in FCC Survey of Consumer Broadband SpeedsReal-world consumer experience shows that all-fiber broadband services perform better around the clock thanthose provided over other access networks (Fiber to the home (FTTH) networks outpaced cable-based andDSL services in the Federal Communications Commissions first nationwide performance study of residentialwireline broadband service in the United States using measurement technology deployed in the consumershome. The report issued today by the FCC, Measuring Broadband America, found that, with regard to peakperiod download speeds as compared to a 24-hour average, FTTH services delivered virtually peak speedsaround the clock, while drop-off in performance during peak usage periods was 5.5 percent for DSL and 7.3percent for cable-based services.August 18, 2011North American Fiber to the Home Industry to Gather for Annual ConferenceThe architect of the U.S. National Broadband Plan and a senior executive at Google will discuss theirorganizations latest fiber initiatives as broadband leaders from around the world gather in Orlando next monthfor the 2011 FTTH Conference & Expo, to take place at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin ResortSeptember 26-30.
