Tourism is an important economic driver

• Total tourism GVA in the NT was $1.66 billion or 8.6% of total GVA in 2012-13.

• 4.3% of the Territory’s total GVA is a direct contribution of tourism, representing $821 million.

• Accommodation accounts for 19% of total tourism GVA

Note: Total visitor expenditure = International expenditure (including package spend) + domestic expenditure (including airfares and long distance transport costs)

• Domestic expenditure down 14% for YE Dec 2013, compared to previous year.

• International expenditure up 16% for YE Dec 2013, compared to the previous year, based on indicative figures using the old methodology.

• 2020 targets are for $1.663 billion domestic expenditure and $559 million international expenditure.

ACCOMMODATION

• More rooms for holiday visitors have come online in Darwin

• More rooms for business travellers and workers have come online too

• More projects in the pipeline will ease pressure on accommodation even further

• There’s opportunity for additional investment because returns are good
