Protector 18.0 – 30 Aug 2012
-‐ Changes on the Welcome Page With Firmware 18, the Welcome Page has been reorganized in these aspects:
• All the Quick Links have been moved to the left column • The Module Control Panel has been moved upwards • Some charts have been added to the central column • New Alert Meters have been added to the right column • All the data subject to change have been associated to an automatic reload
function. Quick Links The quick links can now be found only on the left column, and are organized by category. There is a set of pre-‐defined links, but it’s possible to customize them depending on the user’s preferences and the way the Protector is mainly used. The Mail links that could be found on the central column have been moved to a new menu item, given their importance.
To customize the links on the left column, select the menu item Setup – Quick Links in the Advanced Menu. Here you first need to select the page for which you want to customize the quick links (Main Welcome page or Advanced Welcome
page), then you will get the complete list of available items that can be added to the quick links. Here the links are grouped by category and the ones that are on the Welcome Page are already checked. The links will be displayed on the Welcome page grouped by category as well, in the same order they are displayed here.

Charts By default, the following charts are displayed on the Welcome Page: Emails received by hour and System Load. These charts are automatically refreshed every 2 minutes. It is possible to customize charts on the Welcome Page by clicking on Setup – Home Page Charts in the Advanced Menu. Here you will get the list of available charts, to be displayed on both Main and Advanced Welcome Pages.
It’s possible to choose the charts to display, the color of background and of data, the refresh rate in seconds. To customize colors, you can click on the icon of the rainbow. Alert Meters In the right column, a new set of alert meters has been added. They can give an immediate picture of the general alert level for each of the items on the same line. The Alert Meters, as well as all the remaining data on the right column, will refresh every minute. In the next release of the Protector, it will be possible to customize the thresholds for the Yellow, Orange and Red alert level.

-‐ Mail Proxy Whitelist
This feature allows a user behind the Protector to login to port 25 of a SMTP server on the outside network. In fact, by default, the Protector intercepts all IP requests addressed to port 25, and for this reason, logging to that port is not possible. If any of the machines in the local area network need to login to a SMTP server, they need to be whitelisted, so that the Protector will allow their requests to pass through it, without
intercepting them. To do this, just click on menu Proxy – Mail Proxy – Whitelist and enter here the list of machines that need to use this feature. You can also enter a list of machines in the C-‐class with a range notation, as in the example picture. At the end, click on Restart Mail Proxy.

-‐ Anti-‐Spam Statistics In all the Anti-‐spam Statistics pages, the Protector’s standard menu has been added, and a warning message has been added in case of no data.
In the Statistics of all Spam and Virus, the system will automatically make statistics available for the current year and the previous 5 years. This will keep the Protector up-‐to-‐date in case of change of year.

-‐ And… Improved System Logs: removed firmware lock files from automatic log deletion, because this is no longer necessary in order to restart an interrupted firmware update.
Improved Database Update: The way this function updates the time/date of last successful execution has been improved, to avoid that incomplete updates are misinterpreted by the Protector. Moreover, when a manual Database Update is launched, the system displays the actual update frequency, as configured on the unit, and the actual date of last successful launch.
Adminip: It can happen that a user needs to login to a Protector unit from IP addresses that change frequently. To do this, it’s necessary to use the /adminip/ function, which adds the new IP to the Protector’s list of allowed IP’s. If this list grows beyond the maximum allowed size, the Protector has to remove the oldest IP added. In this case, it can happen that the IP address of another users, stored in the list of allowed IP’s of the Protector, get out of the list, and causes the user not to be able to login any more without any apparent reason. To avoid this problem, the new /adminip/ function will remove from the list, only the oldest IP’s with the lowest number of logins, to preserve IP’s of users that usually log in from the same IP.
Webfilter report images: In the cases when the Webfilter Report does not have data to display, it was possible that the browser displayed the icon of a broken image.
WiFi Defender: The text in this page has been improved in the case that the feature is not available and in the case that no antenna in plugged in.
