O ritmo de crescimento da inovação tem apenas de continuar a evoluir da mesma forma, até ser desenvolvida uma supermáquina capaz de acelerar ainda mais o ritmo de inovação (talvez mesmo criando uma máquina ainda mais inteligente, aumentando dramaticamente a quantidade de inteligência disponível na Terra), alcançando o ponto de feedback explosivo em que a dinâmica e complexidade do conhecimento e da tecnologia ficaria fora da esfera humana. Esse ponto fulcral e imprevisível é a Singularidade.

Mas há diversos pontos de vista, que chamam a nossa atenção para aspectos notáveis da reflexão atual acerca do impacto dessa eventualidade, e vários caminhos para a alcançar (software com capacidade para aprender, entidades artificiais surgidas por evolução de sistemas computacionais, integração do sistema nervoso humano com hardware, fusão de seres humanos e computadores através de interfaces ou redes computacionais auto-organizadas).

Não nos limitemos ao ramo computacional. As ciências biológicas também poderão colocar ao nosso dispor meios para ampliar as capacidades humanas: manipulação genética, controle de características antes da fecundação e cultivo de órgãos in vitro são apenas algumas das possibilidades.
O aspecto fundamental da Singularidade é a alteração da ecologia tecnológica: o forte ritmo de inovação transformaria continuamente o mundo e o próprio ser humano, tornando inútil (ou extremamente difícil) o esforço de previsão. O surgimento de uma super-inteligência tornaria o mundo e a tecnologia infinitamente mais complexos.

_It’s impossible. This one seems mostly behing us, but sometimes appears. Ask them if they thing the
biological molecular machines in their body only works because they are imbued with “vital force”.
_It’s scary, so we should pretend it’s impossible. This one is alive and well in some quarters.
Acknowledge that thinking about how to present ideas to the public is important, but explain forcefully
that pretending that feasible technologies are impossible is not a good strategy. Discuss ways
of presenting the technology that are clearer, less alarming and technically accurate. Nobody is scared
of 3D printers, so use that to explain molecular manufacturing. Don’t describe molecular manufacturing
in terms of assemblers, wich are so small they can’t be seen, can’t be stopped, replicate autonomously,
and stir up primitive fears in people’s pscyches.
_It’s a century or more away. This one is still reasonably commom. Point out that advances in technology
often happen faster than expected. Discuss linear versus exponential thinking.

_Nanotechnology refers only to objects that are small in size: it refers to objects of all sizes that are built with great precision --
objects of all sizes that are built with essentially every atom in the right place. A molecular computer might visibly sit on a desktop,
earning its right to be the “molecular” prefix because its many trillions of logic gates and interconnects were atomically precise in
their contruction. A mnemonic to help remember this myth: “There’s nothing small about nanotechnology”.
Myth: Main stream research is actively pursuing and funding research in molecular nanotechnology (MN). Much mainstream research
on MN happens by accident, despite the best efforts of funding agencies and most researchers to avoid this area. While a few
researchers are interested in this area, funding agencies are generally desinterested. Explicit proposals for research in molecular
nanotechnology, mechanosynthesis, assembler design, and related areas are seldom funded.
Myth: “nanotechnology” has a well-defined meaning. It doesn’t. Operationally the definition used in most grant applications or papers
is “A term that includes my research and will enhance my odds of getting a grant or being accepted for publication”. The major
distinctions are (a) those definitions applied to incremental improvments in existing research (“linear”nanotechnology) and (b) the
ability to inexpensively arrange atoms in most of the ways permitted by physical law (“exponential” nanotechnology, “molecular
nanotechnology”).

_Exponentially cheaper DNA sequencing costs are a reality, bringing the cost of a single human genome down from US$1B to US$5K within 15 years. _Expect DNA sequencing to continue with a 5x - 10x improvement per year. _The informatics cost of storing and analyzing, and interpreting a genome is now the majority of the marginal cost. _Advances in informatics (particularly in systems biology, pathways analysis, and visualization) will be necessary to keep this field moving forward at asteady clip. _By 2020, expect the marginal cost of sequencing a human genome to be about US 1 cent. _The democratization of biotechnology tools and techniques is a powerful force, putting more capabilities in more hands. _The future of industry looks like a micropub. Genetically engineered micro-organisms will be responsible for a progressively greater proportion of materials processing, manufacturing, drug production, and energy systems.

(The "GATACA" scenario) limit personal freedoms?
_Should genes be patented? The ACLU v. Myriad Corp. case is heading toward the US Supreme Court right now, and will
likely cast a long shadow in the industry to come. Ask your classmate, Harrison Dillon.
_Do you own your own genes? As a person, or an ethnic group? Who owns the genes in a geographical boundary?
Can non-first-world countries create wealth from their biodiversity? What does it mean to own a gene?
_Do you have the right to privacy for your genetic information? Can governments, employers, medical establishments,
family members access your genetic information?
_Are you entitled to view your own gentic information? Some bioethicists think not -- they worry both that learning too
much about genetic risks will cause unwarranted anxiety and that the economic justification is not currently there (that you
don't get enough "bang for your buck"). Conventional bioethical wisdom is that patients and the general public have no
need for genetic info.
_Is the genomic sequencing industry viable? It's still a small, mostly research-use market, doctors don't have a handle on
making use of the data, the regulatory environment makes planning hard, and the flagship companies have had a few bad
quarters recently.

_No one seriously talksabout "junkDNA" anymore. Only 1% of your DNA is in genes. Genes code for proteins. The rest of your DNA (formerly known as "junk DNA") is highly repetitive, but is largely responsible for gene regulation -- determining which genes are turned on in what tissues, under what conditions, and how many copies of a given gene are made.
_Getting your 23andMe data is not the same as geting your genome sequenced. Call it a "genome scan" versus a "genome sequence". 23andMe only scans about 1.2 million bases out of around 3.2 billion total. These 1.2M are the bases we know the most about for now.
_The "$1000genome" (or any other price people bandy about) is probably not the retail price, but rather the cost of chemical reagents and consumables to do a human genome sequence. It doesn't count how much it costs to buy capital equipment, pay people to run it, market, support, admin, etc. It especially doesn't count how much it costs to *interpret* that data; the phrase "$1,000 sequence, $1,000,000 interpretation" is quoted a lot.
_Epigenetics is really not all that practically important. Only a few diseases have been found to have an epigenetic basis, and the tools of gene expression are cheaper and easier ways to detect epigenetic changes in the genome.
