Entrepreneurship

• Entrepreneurship: The process of creating something new with value by devoting the necessary time and effort, assuming the accompanying financial, psychic, and social risks and uncertainties, and receiving rewards of monetary and personal satisfaction. (Hisrich / Peters / Shepherd, Entrepreneurship, p.6)

• Creating something new of value

• Devotion of necessary time and effort

• Receiving the rewards of being an entrepreneur

• Assuming the necessary risks and uncertainties

• Entrepreneurship – the short definition: Entrepreneurship is the process of changing ideas into commercial opportunities and creating value. (Leach / Melicher, Entrepreneurial Finance, p. 7)

… But: What Type of Venture Do You Have in Mind?

• Lifestyle Ventures

• Normally copycat businesses, rarely major competitive advantage, no / few employees

• Lifestyle entrepreneurs operate in their comfort zone

• Accounts for around 80% of all ventures USA

• Modest Ventures

• Generate reasonable income, founders approach them as businesses, some employees

• Reasons for staying modest: Not enough competitive advantages to grow / only changed from lifestyle business because of market conditons / lack of skills of founders

• Accounts for > 15% of all ventures in USA

• Promising Ventures

• Special characteristics, e.g. Intent, focus, scale of operations, scalability, execution capab.

• Can often become leading company (examples: Domino‘s, Subway)

• Accounts for > 4% of all ventures in USA

• High-Growth Ventures

• Truly exeptional, intend to become market leader

• May become Fortune 500 companies, e.g. Amazon, Dell

• Accounts for around 0.1% of all ventures in USA

• Revolutionaly Ventures

• True exception, „appear once or twice in a decade“

Other Relevant Terms

• Academic / University Entrepreneurship

• Main element: technology transfer, production of high-growth start-ups in the area of knowledge-intensive and technology-based bsusiness

• Typical example: Stanford University and Silicion Valley (Ex.: Adobe, Apple, HP, Sun, Google, Facebook,…), overview http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Valley

• Corporate Entrepreneurship / Intrapreneurship

• Entrepreneurial activity and behavior within well-established business corporations

• Corporate entrepreneurship: at organizational level, intrapreneurship: at personal level

• Social Entrepreneurship

• Entrepreneurial activity and behavior for “social institutions”, NGO’s, etc.
