Global Warming

Page 6: world politics

Global Warming is a general

increase in world temperatures caused by increased amount of carbon dioxide around the Earth.

Air pollution

Page 8: world politics

Air pollution The air in our

towns and cities is very polluted with gases, car fumes, smoke. It is becoming more and more difficult to breathe.

The destruction of the ozone layer

The ozone layer is damaged and it is very dangerous for our planet. The ozone layer is a layer of gases in the sky that prevents harmful radiation from the sun from reaching the Earth

Water pollution

Page 14: world politics

Water pollution Water pollution occurs when harmful

substances are released into the water in large quantities which cause damage to people, wildlife, or habitat or indirectly into water bodies without proper treatment to remove harmful compounds.

Effects of water pollution Water pollution is a major

problem in the global context. It has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.

An estimated 700 million Indians have no access to a proper toilet, and 1,000 Indian children die of diarrhea sickness every day.

Some 90% of China's cities suffer from some degree of water pollution, and nearly 500 million people lack access to safe drinking water.

Air Pollution1. Causes:Both human and natural actions

Page 19: world politics

Natural events: forest fires volcanic eruptions wind erosion pollen dispersal natural radioactivity

Human activities that result in air pollution include: Emissions from industries and

manufacturing activities

Global warmingGlobal warming and climate change are terms for the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system and its related effects.

2014 is the warmest year on record since 1880

Page 29: world politics
Page 30: world politics

The effects of global warming are the environmental and social changes caused (directly or indirectly) by human emissions of greenhouse gases.

Many impacts of climate change have already been observed:

Melting ice or glacier retreat

Changes in the timing of seasonal events

Changes in agricultural productivity

Effect of Fukushima disaster on the Environment

A large amount of radioactive cesium enters an ecosystem

Quickly becomes ubiquitous, contaminating water, soil, plants and animals

Produced the largest discharge of radioactive material into the ocean in history

The area of  Amazon rainforest cleared rose from 415,000 to 587,000 km2

Overfishing

Page 43: world politics

Why is overfishing a problem?• No time for recovery• Fish populations collapsing • Supply limited

(Koster, 2007)

Page 44: world politics

Data About Extent of Problem

Page 45: world politics

Cause of Overfishing • mainly over-exploitation

(Jeantheau, 2005)

Page 46: world politics

Impact on EnvironmentLow growth rates Changes in species composition & biodiversity Extreme changes to the ocean:

       1. Degradation of reefs       2. Destruction to bottom grasses

Page 47: world politics

Impact on Human Health• Prevents heart disease and strokes• Poverty countries depend on fish • Omega-3 fatty acids• Overfishing = all of the above gone
