Presenter guidance:Use this slide to help different Microsofts approach to R&D investment and to set up a conversation around whats next for your customer. Choose 1-2 stories to highlight. Add to these with anything that is more recent in the news, like the stories shared on the Next at Microsoft blog.Key points:Its an exciting time to be at Microsoft. Things are moving fast and it is simply amazing to explore whats possible with technology today and what may be possible on the horizon.Microsoft Research: A hotbed of research and development, Microsoft Research is 1,100 employees, but also some of the very best scientists and engineers in the world. We have, for example, five active ACM Turing Award (the Nobel Prize of computer science) winners on our staff today. In order to empower those scientists and engineers we encourage that people chart their own way, understand what is really important, what is emerging, and what could be disruptive in the future. These people also care a lot about Microsoft and its success and care a lot about our customers and the experiences that they have. We also encourage all of our researchers to give back to the research community, so almost everything we do is published openly in the very best scientific journals and conferences. And while that sounds like we're giving stuff away, in fact, we get double in return, because by doing that we invite collaboration from the best academic minds around the world. Microsoft Research + Cortana: Cortana, our new digital assistant powered by Bing with artificial intelligence modeled after real-life personal assistants, provides a great example of how our research organization is contributing to products. One of our deep areas of focus within both Microsoft Research and our broader R&D organization is machine learning. The underlying vision for Cortana and where it can go was derived from Eric Horvitzs work on conversational interactions and understanding, which go back to the early 90s. Similarly, decades of research into speech and vision helped launch Kinect, which is helping some enterprises rethink how work gets done and the experiences they can provide to customers. Today, Microsoft Research includes more than 1,100 scientists and engineers that work across multiple research areas in research labs worldwide, making significant product contributions and collaborating on external projects that help solve global challenges. (article + article)Building the city of the future: For the past few years, Darrell Smith with the Microsoft Real Estate & Facilities group has been working to unify an incongruent network of sensors from different eras (several decades of different sensor technology and dozens of manufacturers). The software that he and his team built strings together thousands of building sensors that track things like heaters, air conditioners, fans, and lights harvesting billions of data points per week. That data has given the team deep insights, enabled better diagnostics, and has allowed for far more intelligent decision making. This incubation work and our partnerships with companies like Johnson Controls, Accenture, Atos SE, Esri, Invensys and Schneider Electric is now serving as a foundation for smart building, street lighting and building automation solutions worldwide. Making smarter, more efficient use of resources can hopefully someday reduce the significant impact todays commercial and industrial buildings have on the environment (up to 45 percent of emissions). (Smart Buildings solution and article)Improving customer experiences with big data: Big data is having more and more influence in improving the experiences customers have with Microsoft products and services. The Halo 4 team was one of the earliest customers of HDInsight, a Microsoft Azure service based on Hadoop. Insights gained from millions of data objects capture each day help to detect cheaters, update game maps and modes on a week-by-week basis, and run marketing campaigns tailored to each user, helping retain players and keep them interested in trying new aspects of the game. (article)Helping millions of victims of cybercrime fight back: Its estimated that half of online adults were cybercrime victims in the past year and that cybercrime costs the global economy $500 billion annually. The Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit is home to a team of hand-selected experts who were, in their pre-Microsoft lives, federal prosecutors, police officers, technical analysts, bankers, engineers and physicists. Their investigations have brought them to the doorstep of the Russian mafia and a brutally violent Mexican narcotics cartel, as well as all manner of drug dealers, thieves, counterfeiters, pirates and child exploiters from all over the world. They now work to make the Internet a safer place. (article)Skype translation: Yet another example of collaboration between product teams and Microsoft Research is Skype translation, due out later in 2014. Today, we have more than 300 million connected users each month, and more than 2 billion minutes of conversation a day as Skype breaks down communications barriers by delivering voice and video across a number of devices, from PCs and tablets, to smartphones and TVs. But language barriers have been a blocker to productivity and human connection; Skype Translator will help overcome this barrier. (article and video)Internet of Your Things: When trillions of things can be connected, which things should you connect? Rather than thinking about the Internet of Things in terms of everythingsuch as billions of devices and sensorsfocus on what matters most to you. Instead of thinking about the massive amount of data being produced, think about how one piece of data can provide value to your business. This thinking was foundational in the development of the Microsoft Azure Intelligent Systems Service, which offers massive processing capabilities that can be tied into engaging analytics tools. And its what is helping enterprises in manufacturing, retail, health and other industries reimagine their businesses. (website)Envisioning Center: One way to learn more about how were envisioning the future is to visit our Envisioning Center in Redmond, Washington. Visitors can work on interactive desks, talk with colleagues through digital walls, and cook in a Kinect-enabled kitchen. (article)5

For detailed demo steps, see the Instructor Guide or go to the Appendix

This demo is to show the process of creating an information and promotion app in App Studio, before moving the app to Visual Studio where it can be enhanced and extended.

You can take this opportunity to make sure that they students know how to set up a Microsoft account if they dont already have one. There are some instructions in the Student guide.

We HIGHLY recommend going directly to App Studio and building a sample app in front of them. Ideally, about a topic you are passionate about that would also be interesting to your audience. However, you can also go to the Appendix and show slides 16-41 for offline environments or to show you what features to demo.12

Apps are organized into sections, and apps may contain up to six sections. Users navigate between sections by swiping left or right or using a section link in a menu section.

Each section contains a data source or, in the case of the menu section, a collection of menu items. A data source is simply the content that you want to display in each section of your app videos, photos etc. Each section also contains one or more pages. A page defines the user interface that your app displays, and different section types come with different, pre-defined page layouts that you can choose from.

On the Content page, add a new Section by clicking on a Section type. For a Section, you will see its corresponding Data Source and Section Pages. Edit the parts of a Section by clicking on the pencil next to its name. For a Menu, you will see its Menu Page and Menu Items that can each be expanded. To edit Menu Items, you must first click on the pencil next to the Menu name and then click on the pencil next to the item you want to edit.

When you edit a Section, you can change the content through binding and actions. You can also change the layout that determines the available content fields and add Extras to the application bar, like share, text to speech and pin to start.

When youve finished creating your app you must ask App Studio to generate it in order to be able to run it. You can then:

Install the app on your Windows 8 device.Share the app with other App Studio users in an email message.Publish your app to a store.Make your app public in App Studio.Download your app.

The Generate app dialog box allows you to choose to generate a Windows Phone 8 app or a Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 app.Windows Phone 8: With this option you will get the option for three downloads for Windows Phone 8 an immediately installable package, a XAP package ready to publish your app in Store, and the source code you can edit in Visual Studio. You always get the source code.Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1: This option generates an app that can be run on Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1, and provides the same three downloads as the Windows Phone 8 option. However, currently the Windows Phone 8.1 option for phone is disabled so to sideload use the Windows Phone 8.0 installable package.

By default source code will be generated for either option. The Publish packages and Installable packages sliders have to be turned on to generate publish and install packages. Initially students will only want to generate an installable package, to test the app on their device.

Key Points:Based in South Korea, this machine uses Kinect to reward dancers with Coke.

http://www.inquisitr.com/402829/intelligent-coca-cola-vending-machine-rewards-great-dance-moves-with-free-cokes/

The Coca Cola Company recently unveiled the latest vending machinetechnologyin South Korea and the experiment met with great success. The new high tech machine encouraged passing shoppers to demonstrate their break dance moves and rewarded the best efforts with free Cokes. As shoppersstroll through the mall, they are quickly challenged by the machine to emulate the dance moves of SouthKoreasultra popular boy band, 2 PM. When a brave soul accepts the invitation, they are instructed to step on the bright red circle painted on the floor, and the magical machine begins the fun. . .

Some of the less technology friendly members of the audience might think there was a person hidden inside the double sized vending machine, but in reality, the crowd friendly soda dispenser makes use ofMicrosofts Kinect technology. Sensors read the dancers body moves and when they copy the dance step correctly, out pops a bottle of Coke. The lucky winner can take their free drink or bust a few more moves to win free Cokes for their friends.
