The building is constructed from concrete and the roof over the main corridor is constructed from laminated wood. The classrooms are clad with unpainted, galvanised, corrugated iron sheeting. The curved wall that is built across the main corridor is clad with korten steel. The sails in the assembly hall are also clad kortensteel. The low wall that faces the garden is a turf covered, dry-stone wall that softens the southern aspect and demonstrates tradition Icelandic building techniques to the children

This school was built to minimise energy use,for example through passive solar gain andsuper insulation with at least 200 mm ofinsulation throughout. The insulation used ispart made from recycled glass.
The school is built with a timber frame, whichwas sourced from Scandinavia and camewith the Pan European Forest Certificationlabel (PEFC).

One of the first students to be educated by theKing’s school was William Shakespeare (1564 –1616)
Presently, the school has more than 400 studentsand teaches acting, swimming and technologicalsubjects.
It could be difficult to predict the future of the school,but, from the evidence of the past, it seemscertain that it will continue to confront and satisfymodern needs.
How is it possible?
I think the secret is obviously the architecturefeatures:
• Inspirational (not institutional character, intersting,stimulating, architecture as a third educator);
• Symbolic (the story, the traditions, theShakespeare’s legend)
The whole of these features generates respect ofarchitecture, of spaces up to make acceptableeven the evident limits.

Cosa hanno in comune tutte queste
architetture?
Province Italiane e dialtri Enti.
Il CISEM è Associate Member del CELE OECD /
OCSE Parigi (www.cisem.it)
Il progetto è strutturato su 5 Principles di
base (Definibili anche come Macro Index),
condivisi dall’ OECD / OCSE:
1) Functionality, flexibility and multi-
purpose / Efficienza degli spazi,
flessibilità e multifunzionalità;
2) Symbolic, visually pleasing and offers
learning opportunities / Simbolismo,
estetica, architettura come terzo
educatore, nuove opportunità
educative;
3) Quality of design and layout, new
technologies and domotic / Qualità
del progetto e delle procedure, nuove
tecnologie e domotica;
4) Healthy and safe / Sicurezza e
Disaster Management;
5) Environmentally sustainable /
Sostenibilità ambientale

Esistono esempi di architetture
educative intelligenti?
As for the multi – purpose capability it is important underline as the basic module adopted
can turn itself quickly in a different functional space: for instance as residence, hostel,
temporary hospital, refuge during the natural collapse, etc.

dell’Istituto all’avanguardia nel mondo27

La scuola primaria intelligente di
Solaro (Mi) - 2011
Alcuni obiettivi tecnici raggiunti:
• Una totale flessibilità e multifunzionalità;
• Un’architettura “educativa” con forti
simbolismi;
• Bioarchitettura ed ecocompatibilità delle
tecnologie adottate;
• Un fabbisogno energetico di circa 20
Kwh/mq/anno (Classe energetica A, < 30
Kwh/mq/anno), quindi bassissimi consumi;
• Zero Carbon and pollution - Riscaldamento
invernale e raffrescamento estivo con due
pompe di calore (Nessuna caldaia e quindi
niente inquinanti atmosferici!).
• Acqua sanitaria con pannelli solari ed
energia elettrica alle pompe con il
fotovoltaico (Fino a 120 mq);
• Areazione naturale con camini solari;
• Bolle climatiche flessibili in tutti gli ambienti;
• Massima sicurezza e disaster management
• Un costo di costruzione contenuto in circa
1.100 €/mq.
