Oh No Noah! is a picture book for young kids,

authored by Heather Keller-hals-Stewart and illustrated by Gwendoyn Monnet. My task was to design the book and coordinate its printing.

I chose the serif font Georgia for the text – easy to navigate for new readers, gentle on a parents’ eyes.

Oh N a !ho No

“Oh no,” says Noah. “I’m not eating mybroccoli.”

But if Noah has to eat his broccoli, a funny thing happens. He grows a long neck and teeth for crunching.

Noah the Giraffe gobbles broccoliand most anything growing. Chomp... chomp... he runs out the door, looking for more. He mows the lawn and snacks on a lilac, then stretches his neck for a supperof leaves.

“Oh yes,” says Noah. “My Giraffe eatseverything green.”

“Oh no,” says Noah. “I won’t stop

saying bad words.”

But if Noah has to stop

saying bad words, a funny

thing happens. He grows

flippers and a dorsal fin.

Noah the Dolphin swims

through the sea. Click... click goes his

sonar, spraying out sound. He shrieks

and squeaks, speaks words that reek.

And nobody knows, because grownups

don’t get his dolphinese.

“Oh yes,” says Noah. “My Dolphin knows

lots of words.”

R aza, a young whale, has been wounded by a rifle shot and separated

from his orca pod near Robson Bight on northern Vancouver Island.

What happens when he meets up with a grey goose who is on the run from

the butcher’s block? And how and why do these two unlikely pals connect

with a brother and a sister who live on an isolated island? This is a story

about how trust and love can break all barriers.

The Whale’s Way has been called a true Coast classic. Sheila Egoff

writes in The New Republic of Childhood that this book “may have given

Canadian animal fantasy a new direction.”

HEATHER KELLERHALS-STEWART lives on Quadra

Island where she helps her family manage a farm and

woodlot. From her front yard she can look out on the

water and sometimes see whales or porpoises. Of all the

farm animals she has kept over the years, geese are her

favourite ‒ especially one grey goose called Flora.

Some of her more recent works

include the three picture books Skookum Sam ‒ Spar Tree

Man, Brave Highland Heart and Skookum Sal ‒ Birling Gal ;

as well as two young adult novels about mountains and rock

climbing ‒ Witch’s Fang and Extreme Edge.PUBLISHED BY PHOENIX BOOKS ISBN 978-0-9690796-4-4

H aving the opportunity to work with artists is a very fun

aspect of my design practice. When children’s author Heather Kellerhals-Stewart needed a new cover for a reprint of The Whale’s Way, she commissioned artist and biologist Caroline Heim to create a linocut based on the book’s major characters.

W riter Heather Kellerhals-Stewart commissioned a series of bookmarks for her works of youth fiction. The textual theme –Read BC! – drove a serial design with text, book illustrations and

photographs creating a teaser for each book.

Escape is an anthology of works by Vancouver Island writers and artists,

for which I was asked to do the promo. With a budget in mind, I chose a single stock image for posters, invitations and

bookmarks. The photograph divided nicely in half for a funtiling effect on the bookmarks.
