The Last Notion of Street: Vary, Adapt, Engage

Designed by Dutch modernist architect J.H.Van den Broek in the 1930s, The Eilandenbuurt flats is a pioneer functionalism housing project that sits in a relatively traditional urban context in Rotterdam Zuid. Today the neighbour-hood suffers from problems including difficulty in maintenance and low occu-pancy. This project seeks solution through three actions: vary, adapt, engage. In housing part I transform the heritage from repetitive layout into variant (and merge-friendly) apartment typologies to adapt the need of today and future. In the common floor area new interior street is introduced with green patios and corners that invites the neighbours to meet up each other in a casual way.

Qinhe Refuge House

The design and construction of rain season earthbag houses for Taiwanese aboriginal residents

02

Transitional housing is the alternative for re-location in cases the later is not preferable with cultural and economy reasons. After the Typhoon Morakot the Qinhe village is more vulnerable to flood risk and the road traffic it relies on is cut off easily. The refuge house is a public facility for sheltering the people and commodity during the isolated raining season. The design is local sourcing, low-tech and reversible. The local idle work-force were hired by Atelier-3 to complete their own project through the process of "cooperative construction”. The light-weight steel framing is a modular system used in all post-disaster project and can be assemble by the nonprofessionals. The earthbag wall are excavated and assembled in-situ and can be dismantle and reversed to orchard when the granted an 3-year temporary licence is expired.

It will be too aggressive to take photos of someone’s private house and living. Besides, the scale of the street and its surroundings could hardly be presented faithfully through photography. So we try to record a street by sitting on stools, house by house sketch every facade. It helps record both architectural details and how public/private spaces are occupied. Residents open their door to the street and decorate their doorway with pots, shelters and other stuffs.

The street was not designed or planed at some point in the history. Yet it did not revolve totally by accident ether. We only know that its form was generated by following facts: georaphy, temple layouts, traffic efficiency, self-defance and economy activities.
