Mirko Bagaric is a professor of law at Deakin University and has written extensively, both globally and domestically, in the area of practical moral philosophy. Prior to joining Deakin’s School of Law, Professor Bagaric was at Deacons and the Offi ce of Public Prosecutions (Vic).
Keith Akers obtained his PhD, which focused on the law and philosophy of animal experimentation from Deakin University in 2007. He has published widely on animal issues and is a member of several animal protection groups.
Humanising Animals: Civilising People analyses Animal Rights laws in Australia and how existing laws and practices may be developed for fairer and more effective implementation.
Humans intentionally infl ict enormous amounts of pain on billions of animals each year. The gap that exists between our shared community sentiment towards animals and our treatment of them is one of the most striking and important social paradoxes of our time.
Why is it that the current generation causes more suffering to animals than at any point in history? Bagaric and Akers examine how it is that nearly all people, morally and emotionally, deplore animal suffering yet so much animal suffering continues to occur.
Features and Benefi tsThis book examines:
n The arguments for and against the moral standing of animals
n State-based laws that regulate the care and protection of animals, and prevention of cruelty
n Laws and regulations associated with live exports
n Current legal and social shortcomings
n Proposed social and legal reforms to address current causes of animal suffering
n The capacity of animals to suffer and feel pain
n Specifi c practices that infringe the rights of animals, including intensive farming, animal experimentation (eg in research) and a range of recreational activities
n Reasons for animal suffering in society.
Containing a wealth of thought-provoking ideas and an inspiring foreword by The Hon. Michael Kirby, this is an essential read for students, practitioners and animal lovers alike.
