Directions: Read the following passages and answer the questions which follow each passage. Make sure that your answers are based on the information in the passage. Passage I

In recent years, particularly in the South and West, Hispanic decorating style has spread from the ethnic community to the city center to the suburbs. More public buildings are being constructed with arched entrance, wide shady courtyards and bubbling fountains. ‘I like a building that has a lot of romance in it,’ says one of Miami’s leading Hispanic architects, ‘Not every part of a building is rational and functional. The expression of an architect’s true feeling should also be revealed.’

Many non-Hispanics are drawn to an idealized image of a Latin American refuge: an environment that is at once welcoming and protective, that holds a bit of history, a lot of

family and no sharp edges. Of all the U.S.’s Latino landscapes, perhaps the most haunting is in New Mexico, where Native American, Spanish and eastern-Anglo sensibilities have boiled together in the Southwest sun for the past four centuries. The so-called Santa Fe look has turned into the hottest design fad in years.

To the extent that anyone can define it, Santa Fe style is largely a matter of shape and shading - - the colors of sage-brush and ashes, watery blues and rose and clay. The sand-castle city of its birth is a town without right angles, where whitewashed walls and doorways and fireplaces bend and curve, hand shaped from clay. ‘People just want to return to the earth,’ explained Rachel Elizondo, owner of a Santa Fe art gallery.

41. The Hispanic decorative style … . 1) has recently become famous among non-Hispanic Americans 2) is slightly different from Santa Fe style 3) is quite complicated 4) is a typical American style

he prefers buildings that are … designed. 1) expressively 2) rationally 3) passionately 4) practically

43. The word ‘haunting’ in this passage means … . 1) scary 2) quiet 3) remarkable 4) historical

44. It can be assumed from the second paragraph that … .

1) lots of Hispanics have been living in New Mexico for more than a century 2) most of the people living in New Mexico nowadays are non-Hispanics 3) More and more non-Hispanic Americans are interested in Santa Fe style

because of the growth of Miami’s Hispanic population 4) Hispanics are protective of their architectural heritage

45. The … of the Latin American look attracts so many non-Hispanics.

1) clean and shape edges 2) modern appearance 3) warm and protective style 4) spread

46. The distinctive characteristic of Santa Fe style is the presence of … .

1) right angles 2) bright colors 3) roses and ashes 4) bends and curves

popular means people are … . 1) bored with old-fashioned styles of living 2) longing for natural styles of living 3) searching for new design fads 4) interested in clay construction

48. This passage is mostly about… .

1) the preference of modern architects 2) rational and functional building style 3) the popularity of the Latin American architecture 4) new designs for the coastline cities

Passage II

Many of us grow up believing that intelligent people should have an opinion about absolutely everything. ‘This is good, this is bad, that is outrageous.’ Newspaper express opinions, politicians have pinions, current affairs shows have opinions, next-door neighbors have opinions - - ‘be concerned about this,’ and ‘be outraged about that.’

15

You don’t always have to have an opinion. Sometimes it is appropriate to have no opinion at all. Why not just let people be? When your neighbor says, ‘Don’t you think X should get a job?’ you may like to say, ‘I think X should do what he wants.’ When she says, ‘Isn’t it terrible that X’s wife is so overweight?’ you say to yourself, ‘Perhaps she’s learning about being fat.’ Sometimes, of course, it’s necessary to pass opinions or make an assessment of people - - for example, ‘Does my secretary produce results?’ or ‘Is my accountant doing his job?’ But there are many time when it’s unproductive to pass judgment.

Try this experiment. Spend a week not judging anything or anybody. When next you meet someone who talks a lot, or spends a lot, or complains a lot or doesn’t work, mentally say to yourself, ‘I give you the space to experience life as you choose. It is not for me to judge you.’ Life becomes a lot more serene. A ‘nonjudgmental’ attitude does not mean that you have to ‘like’ everybody, or that you don’t have preferences - - it means that you adopt an attitude where you are more at space with those around you. There will be times when you choose not to be in another’s company, but this can stem more from an attitude of what feels right for you rather than from condemnation of other people’s difference.

49. According to the passage, it can be inferred that … . 1) having opinions about everything is vitally important for people in business 2) people who always make comments are intelligent 3) giving an opinion is one way to show a person’s intelligence 4) people always give comments when they are not satisfied

Passage III

If Thomas Krens, the newly appointed director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, had not gone jogging one April evening in 1991, his brainchild, the Bilbao Guggenheim - - a metallic, post-modern, space-age museum - - would almost certainly never have been built.

From the moment you leave the airport and wind through the green hills of northern Spain towards the ochre-brown 19th century city of Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum can be glimpsed in the distance, like a shiny, modern toy surrounded by hideous urban sprawl. What on earth possessed the Guggenheim Museum to come to a place like Bilbao? The story goes something like this.

Bilbao is Spain’s fourth largest city; a tough sprawling, former shipbuilding community that faces out onto the Bay of Biscay. In the 1980s, the Basque regional government began a redevelopment programme for the city. They commissioned the best and the brightest in the international architectural world to design a new subway system, a new

airport terminal, a new congress and music hall, and a new railway station. But, in order to cement the city’s growing global reputation, they wanted an art museum.

In 1991, Basque officials approached the Guggenheim Foundation and met Thomas Krens, the fourth director in the museum’s 60-year history. Krens was eager to establish a European base for the Giggenheim and with this ambition in mind, he came to Bilbao.

But there was a problem. Krens could see that the site by the city council for its new art museum, a former wine-bottling warehouse in the centre town, was a non-starter. Krens had two models in his head - - the Pompidou Centre and the Sydney Opera House. Both buildings had demanded an extraordinary amount of space, and Bilbao, an over-crowded riverside city did not seem to have the space.

Then, by chance, Krens found the ideal site. An athletic man, he went out running one evening. His route took him past the Jesuit University overlooking the river Nervion, and it was here that he noticed, at one of the many curves of the river, a rundown waterfront zone which was perfect for what he wanted to achieve. The site was approved in a week, and Californian architect Frank Gehry was chosen to realize the project.

Gehry reveled in the eccentric Basque city and the place Krens had found for him on which to build the most important building of the century. He devotedly set about this huge undertaking in the middle of chaos and dirt of the post-industrial environment, and was determined not to change anything about the waterfront site. The outcome is the Bilbao Guggenheim - - an exceptional building which obviously dominates the city at every turn. It is a contemporary art museum like no other, and a building that must rank as one of the eight wonders of the modern world.

Passage IV

As the architectural art of Taiwan can only be considered in connection with that of the mainland, the authoress, who is well known through her researches on East Asiatic art, starts off with a concisely formulated outline of Chinese architectural history in which she, in common with other authors, distinguishes a Southern Chinese from a Northern Chinese style.

The interpretations she gives of the two forms of style, which are to be found side by side in present-day Taiwan, are convincing. In the ‘Summary’ she writes: ‘In Chinese architecture, a Northern style represents the power of the rulers; a Southern style, freedom from government interference. When, in the 16th century, the Chinese from the Southern coastal provinces began to migrate to Taiwan, they took with them their architecture with its elaborately curved and decorated roofs, as a symbol of their cultural superiority. After 1947, the mainland Chinese used the so-called Renaissance patterned after the Northern style for the government buildings. These two poles of architecture on Taiwan, the Peking Palace style and

the uniquely consistent variant of the Southern style, suggest that architectural styles arise from historical situations, to which they, in turn, give visual and lasting expression.’

With acute perceptiveness the authoress recognizes, moreover, that for the Chinese who came from the mainland at the end of the war, the fostering of their traditional architecture is confirmation of the fact that they are living in a free country. The architectural art contributes to making Taiwan into a new homeland. ‘That is why one tries to impose on it the features of the old one.’

Unlike the authoress, the reviewer does not see in that an accent of ‘nostalgic architecture’, but rather, a politicoculturally necessary contribution to the creation of a model state which one hopes to be able to transfer to the mainland.

Passage V

Deceptively simple in design, the Australian boomerang looks more like a toy than a fatal Aboriginal hunting weapon. But this thin, curved piece of hardwood is more than a throwing stick; it is artfully shaped to exploit the aerodynamic lift on its wings as it whirls through the air toward a remote target. While boomerangs have been found worldwide, the earliest extant specimens date back ten millennia to Australia, where the finest and most elaborate boomerangs are still made. Boomerangs have played a significant role in Australian aboriginal culture and have commonly appeared in Aboriginal myth and art. Boomerangs come in two varieties, returning and non-returning. The returning type circles back to the vicinity of the thrower and is primarily used in sport or for amusement. The non-returning type either strikes its game or drops to the ground. A game of skill, boomerang throwing has developed into a competitive sport in Australia, and currently national and state championships are held annually.

Passage VI

The appeal of Gothic architecture was so strong that it couldn't stay buried for long. The first major Gothic revival began in 1740's in England. Horace Walpole, the eccentric 4th Earl of Orford, was one of the first to re-popularize the style. Horace was an incurable romantic, given to dramatic and aesthetic indulgence. Horace was quite taken with the Medieval period from an early age and decided to construct his own castle in homage to Gothic architecture.

In 1747, Walpole purchased a five-acre estate with a modest house in Twickenham, West London. The property, Strawberry Hill House, is now internationally recognized because it was here that Walpole fulfilled his Gothic dream, which subsequently inspired a 19th-century Gothic revival in both literature and architecture. Walpole referred to the house as his 'little Gothic castle'. Between 1747 and 1792 Walpole doubled its size and incorporated several Gothic features such as towers and battlement, with the result that the house is now regarded as one of the best examples of Georgian Gothic architecture. By the time he completed the project 50 years later, the estate had grown from five to 46 acres.

Strawberry Hill, now a Grade l listed property, was placed on the World Monuments Fund list of 100 most endangered sites in 2004. It is also on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk register. The restoration of the House is being undertaken by the Strawberry Hill Trust, with support from the Friends of Strawberry Hill. Almost £9 million has been donated by individuals, local societies, small and large charitable trusts including.

As part of the restoration programme a considerable amount of historical research into the structure and interior of the house has been carried out with the result that Strawberry Hill House is now one of the UK's most documented historic buildings. Investigations inside the House have revealed Walpole's original trompe l'oeil designs previously hidden by many layers of paint.
