הברון אדמונד ג'יימס דה רוטשילד נולד בשנת 1845 בעיירה בצרפת ליד פריז והקדיש את זמנו לפעילות פילנתרופית ולקידום האמנות והתרבות.

הקצאת הכספים ושלח מומחים לחקלאות, למים ולכלכלה אשר פיתחו ענפי ולחזק את קיומן הכלכלי. מערך גידול חדשים במטרה לבסס את המושבות רבים, ענפים חקלאיים תעשייתיים רוטשילד פיתח והפקידות של המומחים כן, יינות אשר את תוצרתם שיווקו ברחבי העולם. כמו וייצור גפן גידול בהם פותחו מטעי זיתים ובתי בד מודרניים לשמן זית, ותעשיית בשמים שהתבססה

על גידולים חקלאיים שהוכנסו לארץ במיוחד לצורך זה. הברון הקים ,1923 בשנת ישראל, בארץ הבריטי המנדט תחילת לאחר

רוטשילד את פיק"א והעביר לשם את ניהול מפעליו בארץ. הברון רוטשילד נפטר בשנת 1934. כעבור 20 שנה, בשנת 1954, הועלו עצמותיו הברון מהמושבות שהקים כמה הנדיב. ברמת ונטמנו ארצה ועצמות אשתו בתיה, בת שלמה, מזכרת יעקב, זיכרון כגון: בני משפחתו, על שמות נקראו בנימינה, גבעת עדה ועוד. בסך הכל רכש הברון רוטשילד יותר מחצי מיליון דונם בארץ ישראל, שעליהם הוקמו למעלה מ–40 יישובים. עם הקמת מדינת ישראל, כמתנה הארץ ברחבי אדמותיה מרבית את רוטשילד משפחת העניקה ביותר שניתנה למדינה בעולם המערבי - תרומת הקרקעות הגדולה למדינה

ומנוף קריטי להקמת מדינת ישראל.

Baron Edmond James de Rothschild was born in 1845 in a French town near Paris, and devoted his time to philanthropic activity and promoting the arts and culture.The distress of Russian Jews and the pogroms that took place in 1881 led the Baron to the conclusion that the main solution to the Eastern European Jews’ problem was to immigrate to the Land of Israel and build a new life there. Under the influence of the Chief Rabbi of Paris, the Baron began supporting the Hibbat-Zion movement and the initial organization of groups that tried to reach the Land of Israel and establish new colonies.Upon embarking on his activity in the Land of Israel, the Baron refrained from openly publicizing his support of the Jewish Yishuv, and he was called "Hanadiv” (The Known Benefactor). When the first colonies became embroiled in financial hardships that endangered their very existence, they appealed to the Baron and he agreed to help save them. His first activity in this realm was in 1882 in Rishon Lezion, which was on the verge of being dismantled. Later the Baron stepped up his involvement and began aiding the other colonies as well, which were likewise in crisis. Understanding that the colonies could not continue to exist as lone settlements scattered few and far between throughout the land, the Baron started buying large plots of land and founding new colonies on them.In order to make his support of the new settlements more efficient, the Baron set up a

supervisory system for the allotment of monies, and dispatched agricultural, water and finance experts who developed new crops aimed at stabilizing the colonies and fortifying their economic base. His system of experts and officials instated numerous industrial agricultural branches, including growing vineyards and producing wines which were marketed worldwide. Olive groves and modern olive oil processing facilities were initiated, as well as a perfume industry based on agricultural crops brought to the Land of Israel expressly for this purpose. After the British Mandate began in 1923, the Baron de Rothschild founded PJCA, the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association, and moved the administration of his Zionist endeavors there.The Baron passed away in 1934. About 20 years later, in 1954, his and his wife’s remains were transferred to Israel and reinterred at Ramat Hanadiv. Some of the colonies the Baron had founded were named after family members, such as Zichron Yaakov, Mazkeret Batya, Bat Shlomo, Binyamina, Givat Ada, and others. Altogether, the Baron purchased over half a million dunams (about 125,000 acres) in the Land of Israel, on which more than 40 villages were built. Upon the establishment of the State of Israel, the Rothschild Family granted most of the lands it owned throughout Israel to the nation as a gift. This is, notably, by far the largest donation of land to any country established in the Western world and a crucial impetus in the founding of the State of Israel.

Even if we tried to combine and merge the figures of three great men – Don Joseph Nasi, Sir Moses Montefiore and Baron Hirsch, each of whom did great things in his own time and way – we could not fully express the multi-talented and highly visionary personality of the 'Hanadiv', the Known Benefactor"

Besides scholarship programs, programs to make higher learning more accessible, and innovative programs for at-risk youth, the foundation also promotes academic excellence by supporting pioneering research and returning scientists. Over the years the foundation has founded research centers at universities and colleges, as well as libraries and other public buildings. In addition to activities in higher education, the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation makes an annual donation to the local authorities in the vicinity of Caesarea, earmarked to advance a broad spectrum of education-oriented projects.

METHODOLOGY - 21st Century PhilanthropyAs part of the global network of Rothschild foundations under the leadership of Baroness Ariane de Rothschild, the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation operates according to the approach of being proactive and fundamentally involved in the entire range of projects that it partners.The foundation identifies societal challenges and helps spearhead innovative solutions, while building partnerships and evaluating results and social impact. To this end, the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation participates in defining project goals and accompanying implementation; it is active in the steering committees and decision-making processes, and labors constantly to assess each project and its influence, through the foundation’s measurement and evaluation unit. In the past decade, Israeli society has undergone a number of disturbing processes, including a significant increase in social gaps, a decrease in the statistics reflecting solidarity and social responsibility, and a drastic decline in the scores of international standardized tests in education.

The Rothschild Caesarea Foundation works in three main areas designated to best serve its goals and respond to these challenges:

Maximizing and making accessible higher education accessible among weaker segments of the population – Activities aimed at advancing equal opportunities by offering the entire range of population groups in Israeli society the possibility of attaining higher learning that will lead to suitable employment.

Developing social responsibility and leadership among the younger generation – Activities meant to develop social responsibility among young people, leading to social involvement and the formation of a leadership network that will work to reduce gaps and promote education in Israeli society.

Promoting academic excellence – Activities designed to position Israel at the vanguard of global academic research, develop the next generation of scientists, and promote research in the foundation’s areas of interest.The foundation’s overall strategic plan included the establishment of the Rothschild Ambassadors Organization as a central project with the goal of locating and training youths with potential for social leadership, and who are interested in influencing Israeli society and setting up a multidisciplinary network for the advancement of education in the periphery and the reduction of social gaps. In another decade or so, the hundreds of ambassadors of social change who will be deployed throughout Israel are bound to work as a network to promote education in the periphery and reduce social gaps, while integrating into key positions in Israeli society.

Since the end of the 19th Century and to this very day, the Rothschild family has been one of the supporting pillars in the notion, establishment and development of the

State of Israel. Throughout these many long decades, the family has consistently been at the forefront of realizing the conceptual path of a progressive Jewish state that will not only be the home of the Jewish people but also a symbol and paradigm of social justice and equal opportunity. The Rothschild Caesarea Foundation is the continuation of the journey implementing this vision, which was formed more than a century ago and persists in beating strongly among the descendents and followers of the Known Benefactor.

HISTORY - Establishment of the Foundation and its Unique Operational ModelThe Rothschild Caesarea Foundation was established by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, the grandson of the Known Benefactor. While his grandfather left his mark by acquiring lands and settling them, Baron Edmond de Rothschild will be remembered for his contribution to the industrialization of Israel, and similarly, for his contribution and generosity to educational and cultural institutions.At the end of the 1950s the Rothschild Family transferred its Caesarea property (approximately 30,000 dunams, or 7,400 acres) to the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation, inviting the State to be a partner in the foundation.The foundation operates according to a unique model, by which all the development

revenue from the Caesarea locality is handed over by the foundation’s subsidiaries - the Caesarea Development Co. Ltd. and the Caesarea Assets Corp. - to the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation, which in turn invests its profits in promoting education and higher learning in Israel. When Baron Edmond de Rothschild passed away in 1997, responsibility for the family’s banking group and network of philanthropic foundations was assumed by his son – Baron Benjamin de Rothschild. Baron Benjamin de Rothschild and his wife, Baroness Ariane de Rothschild, actively manage the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation’s activity and influence throughout Israel, as part of the network of Edmond de Rothschild foundations operating in the educational field all over the world.

The BR Ambassadors Organization was founded in October 2010 with the mission of implementing the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation’s

vision of “a just and prosperous Israeli society working to reduce social gaps through higher education and the development of social responsibility” - while striving to make as great an impact as possible on society.The organization’s method of operation was developed following a comprehensive mapping process, which included an analysis of the needs and challenges of Israeli society in the realms of education, higher learning and leadership development. The process identified a need to establish a young leadership reserve of outstanding students coming primarily from socially and geographically disadvantaged groups. The targeted students will achieve academic success, earn advanced degrees and assume positions of influence in Israeli society, all the while working toward social change

through promoting education and equal opportunities among underprivileged segments of the population. The organization strives to maximize the relative advantage and latent potential

They are primarily from disadvantaged social and geographical groups and are interested in becoming part of the future generation of social and business leaders in Israel. They are meticulously selected from a pool of thousands of candidates and must successfully pass all the initial and screening stages to be accepted into the organization.The training process for the Ambassadors is based on personal, professional and social development. Throughout their activity in the organization, they participate in workshops oriented toward knowledge and awareness of Israeli society, training and experience in leadership development, and involvement in initiating and leading community projects.The Ambassadors represent a broad spectrum of groups and sectors in Israeli society. The organization accompanies the Ambassadors throughout their years of undergraduate studies, with the possibility of continuing their activity as part of the organization while studying for their masters and doctoral degrees.The organization operates throughout Israel, based on cooperation with academic institutions, local authorities and other organizations from all segments of Israeli society. Over the next few years the organization expects to train hundreds of BR Ambassadors, who will function as a nationwide social network of multidisciplinary leaders for maximum effect in Israeli communities and towns.

Foundation. Teachers in the program broaden and intensify their scientific knowledge, gain firsthand familiarity with the latest scientific innovations, acquire cutting-edge teaching strategies, participate in and initiate science instruction projects and research, become familiar with research laboratories at the Weizmann Institute and spearhead unique initiatives. The courses are all designed especially for the program and take the teachers’ special circumstances into consideration. Most are taught by senior scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science.Graduating teachers bring to their classrooms not only new knowledge and methods, but a close relationship and cooperation with Weizmann Institute scientists, the Science Teaching Department, and the Davidson Institute of Science Education on the Weizmann Institute campus. Continuation programs are also offered for those who want to take part in establishing and leading groundbreaking educational initiatives to promote the teaching of science and math inside and outside the classroom.In addition to the Masters’ track in science teaching, the Rothschild-Weizmann Program offers another track designed for teachers who already have a Masters’ or doctoral degree in science teaching and want to apply their experience to carrying out special initiatives in the educational system. These entrepreneurial teachers work in groups along with the teaching staff of the Science Teaching Department over the course of one or two years. The goal of the program is to advance the teaching of up-to-date science through developing new study materials, distributing them and promoting innovative teaching and educational methods that will, among other things, increase interest in the sciences among students. The future plan is to integrate some of the Masters’ degree graduates into leadership positions in these special initiatives, so they can facilitate the implementation of these programs in their schools, while coming into contact with their fellow teachers and other educators who attend various professional training courses.

At the beginning of the 21st century, there was a push to rethink science teaching in Israel to upgrade both the content and

study methods used to teach science in the schools. New standards now shape the ways in which the various sciences are taught, in formal and informal study alike. Intensifying this drive were concerns about a decline in the Israeli educational system’s achievements in recent years, so that the need to improve the educational system became even more critical.The Rothschild-Weizmann Program for Excellence in Science Teaching is a prestigious Masters’ degree program directed at outstanding high school science teachers. It aims to promote excellence among math and science teachers in Israel. The program,

inaugurated in 2008 by the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Science Teaching Department and funded by the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation, is designed to bring about significant improvement in the level of science teaching in Israel.All program participants, who continue to teach while they study, receive full exemption from tuition and are even awarded a scholarship funded by the Rothschild Caesarea

בחינוך, מ - החברה פני את האחרונות בשנים שינה המחשב מדעי חקר במסחר, בתעשייה, בממשל, בחוק ובתחומי חיים רבים אחרים. מתוך הכרה

בשינויים הקיצוניים הללו, וכדי להכיר באתגרים איתם, מביאים אלה ששינויים ובאפשרויות מכון חיפה באוניברסיטת הוקם 2001 בשנת המחשב. במדעי בין–תחומי למחקר במינו יחיד של התרומה בזכות התאפשרה המכון הקמת בפעילותו גם שתמכה קיסריה, רוטשילד קרן השוטפת של המכון. מטרת המכון לחנוך, לקדם בין–תחומיות ולתכניות למחקר בסיס ולהיות בתחום מדעי המחשב. בעוד שבישראל קיימים מספר מכוני מחקר למדעי המחשב, ישנם מעט בין–תחומיים למחקרים עצמם המקדישים בעולם מכונים

interdisciplinary computer science research, initiates new interdisciplinary research projects, and organizes international workshops and discussions with researchers from all over the world. In the educational sphere, the institute has inaugurated new tracks and courses for undergraduate and graduate degrees in multidisciplinary studies involving computer sciences and other university departments. Scholarships are also awarded each year for the institute’s study programs. In the technological sphere, the institute provides support and encouragement to advanced students and faculty members who wish to conduct research and develop ideas and inventions with an economic or social impact. The institute’s work has considerably impacted computer science research in Israel. Since it was founded, the young institute has already attracted numerous researchers and supported projects and partnerships with at least 12 other University of Haifa departments. It has hosted close to 200 scientific conferences, attended by over 1,000 international scientists, including laureates of Nobel, A. M. Turing, and Fields Medal prizes. The institute has spawned dozens of new courses and workshops and made a substantial number of new research projects possible as well, many of which are being continued thanks to donations from external foundations. The institute provides a number of services to the university, as well as to the scientific community in Israel. It greatly contributes to Israel’s ability to maintain its position among the top ranks of worldwide computer science research.

ד ושם, רשות הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה, הנו מוסד ממלכתי שהוקם בשנת 1953 ימתוקף חוק שחוקקה כנסת ישראל. יד ושם פועל לתיעוד תולדותיו של העם מיליון שישה של חייהם וסיפור זכרם להנצחת השואה, בתקופת היהודי הארכיונים, באמצעות הבאים לדורות השואה מורשת ולהנחלת הנרצחים

הספרייה, בית הספר והמוזיאונים הפועלים בתחומו.על מנת להתמודד עם אתגרי העתיד בתחומי הנצחת השואה והנחלתה, ולנוכח בעשור בעולם, והן בארץ הן ובגבורה, בשואה וגוברת ההולכת ההתעניינות המרכיבים אחד שנתית. רב פיתוח תכנית ושם יד לפועל הוציא האחרון למבקר המאפשר ושם, ביד חדש מוזיאוני מכלול בניית היה הפיתוח בתכנית המרכזיים מפגש חזותי עם סיפורי השואה וזוועותיה. התצוגות, הכוללות חפצים אישיים של קרבנות, הפן את מדגישות ניצולים, של וידאו ועדויות מקוריים אמנות חפצי אותנטיים, תצלומים

פי המסורת, נחקקים על מצבת הקבר: שם הנפטר, מקום לידתו ותאריכי לידתו ומותו. קרבנות שמות מליון כארבעה מכיל אשר בשואה, הנרצחים על מידע לחיפוש החדר באמצעות מסכי מחשב, נמצא בסמוך למבנה המרכזי של היכל השמות שבקרבתו הוקם

גם מרכז למידה חדש.היכל השמות, על שלושת חלקיו, משלים למעשה את מלאכת הקודש של הבטחת קבורה,

ולו רק סמלית, לכל ששת מיליון היהודים שנרצחו בשואה.

small number of victims appear against a background of Pages of Testimony. Between the two cones is a round area with a raised platform in the center. When visitors stand on the platform, the pictures of the murdered look down on them from above, while their faces are reflected in the water at the base of the lower cone. Some equate this structure with a memorial candle, the light of which is never extinguished; others see it as a well from which the victims’ never-ending cries are echoed. Many regard the reflected faces as those names still to be discovered, yet all agree that the structure holds deep meaning to be interpreted by each person who passes through the Hall of Names.The archives are located along the circular outer walls of the Hall of Names, where some 2.5 million original Pages of Testimony are preserved. Visitors are not allowed access to the archives but can see them from the platform. The archives simulate a symbolic resting place for the victims, who were deprived of a Jewish burial. The details traditionally engraved on headstones are recorded in ink on the Pages of Testimony: the name of the deceased, his or her place of birth, and dates of birth and death. The clearly visible gaps on the shelves along the walls await Pages of Testimony for those victims who have yet to be identified by name.Adjacent to the main Hall is a room for conducting computer searches on Yad Vashem’s Central Databases of Shoah Victims’ Names. The Names’ Database has been compiled using information garnered from Pages of Testimony, archival documentation and postwar commemoration projects. Currently it contains some four million names of Holocaust victims.With its three areas for contemplation, preservation and research, the Hall of Names ensures that each and every Holocaust victim will be remembered and honored for eternity.

Holocaust both in Israel and throughout the world, over the past decade Yad Vashem implemented a multi-year development program. One of the program’s main components is the construction of a new Museum Complex at Yad Vashem, which enables visitors to experience visual encounters with stories of the Holocaust and its atrocities. The exhibits, including victims’ personal effects, authentic photographs, original works of art and survivors’ personal testimonies, emphasize the human side of the Jewish experience during that calamitous period. At the end of the tour through the Holocaust History Museum, visitors arrive at the Hall of Names. One of the main pillars in the new Museum Complex, the Hall

of Names was built with the assistance of the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation. The Rothschild Caesarea Foundation considers learning and higher education to be of paramount importance. As part of

its work in this area, and in order to help women succeed in Israeli academia, the foundation enables students to devote their time to their studies and prepare themselves for an academic career in Israel. The Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Program, established in 2008, offers four scholarships per year to outstanding doctoral students in need of financial aid at the Hebrew University, each in her own field of research.

This unique program was introduced during the 2009-10 academic year by the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation in collaboration with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. It complements the Baroness Ariane de Rothschild’s other activities to promote equal opportunities for women throughout the world.Women wishing to pursue higher education in Israel are often forced to give up their ambitions in order to raise their children and help support their families. Due to

childcare needs and financial concerns, they cannot focus on studying and conducting research. Thanks to full scholarships, these women are free to concentrate on their academic research while also being able to attend to their families’ needs. The Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Program seeks to promote equality in

academia and in Israeli society by supporting talented and highly motivated women who come from different backgrounds and work in various fields. The scholarship provided by the program includes tuition and a living allowance, totaling NIS 40,000 per annum over four years of study. For each of the next three years, the scholarship will be granted to four outstanding women students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. The women scholars will be selected by a committee headed by the university Rector, in consultation with the Baroness and with her approval.

Scholarship recipients are expected to give back to the community through volunteer educational activities during the course of their studies or after completing their doctorates. Renewal of the scholarship is contingent upon appropriate progress in the recipients’ studies and research.

Tel-Hai College began operating as an independent academic institution with accreditation from the Council

for Higher Education in 1993. Graduate and Masters studies are now offered in eleven academic departments, along with a host of non-academic study programs. Since its inception, the college has also engaged in community academic activities that combine academic courses, research studies and activities within the community in many different areas. In this context, in early 2008 the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation

invested in a scholarship program to advance science studies and help integrate students, on behalf of Tel-Hai College, in the nearby Upper Galilee communities. The joint program between the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation and Tel-Hai College grants scholarships to encourage new students to choose scientific studies such as biotechnology or environmental sciences, and integrate them into activities that

benefit the community, the environment and the study of science in Upper Galilee. The program includes students from different backgrounds in Israeli society: Druze, residents of underdeveloped communities, local kibbutzim and high school students

who wish to study science in college. The students work in the communities, schools and the Sidney Warren Science Education Center for Youth at Tel-Hai College, tutoring high school students for enrollment exams and helping promote scientific thought. They help pave the way for high school students to pursue science studies in the future. This program creates a reserve of young students who will continue their academic studies in the departments of exact sciences and biology in disadvantaged areas.The Rothschild Caesarea Foundation’s program for the advancement of science studies strengthens Tel-Hai College’s academic position in these subjects and

increases the number of participating students. The program contributes to community development by creating a link between the students and the community.

Visual communication plays an important role in the way information is received, transmitted and understood.

Over the years, awareness of this field has grown steadily, with the media constantly evolving and becoming more sophisticated. The establishment of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design supported the Zionist vision by

bringing substance and form to the symbols of Israeli culture. The Academy's Visual Communication Department set itself the goal of providing higher learning opportunities in order to train a future cadre of designers and catapult the Israeli design industry into the top ranks of designers worldwide.In the 1990's, rapid technological developments changed the face of design. Traditional graphic design gave way to interactive computer graphics, with rich simulation and operation capabilities. This new visual language, with which we are

well acquainted today, took on a central role in the world of hands-on design and has made an impact on every aspect of life. Those who understood the need to

create and design an effective visual language and apply it in a hi-tech world were guaranteed their place on the international design stage. In 1999, with the Caesarea Edmond Benjamin de Rothschild Foundation’s financial support and full backing, Bezalel began developing the Visual Communication Department, which consisted of developing an academic program, building a work space and acquiring furnishings, equipment and computers. The Foundation's financial support was spread over a four-year period, during which 57 new rooms were added to the Visual Communication Department, including classrooms, video and other studios, etc. The

Foundation's contribution played a key role in the development of the Visual Communication Department and helped transform it into the leading institution of higher education in this field.

Project Name: The Jerusalem Inter-Religious Educational Leadership ProgramLocation: East and West JerusalemVision: To create substantial, comprehensive and long-term dialogue between Jewish and Muslim educators from religious communities in East and West Jerusalem with the goal of exposing each group to the religious-cultural historical narrative of the “Other” in order to break free of stereotypes and promote a mindset of coexistence

In 2004, with the full support of the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation, the Mosaica Center for Inter-Religious Cooperation founded the

Jerusalem Inter-Religious Education Leadership Program (JELP). The program set out to establish a network of Jewish and Muslim schools whose principals, teachers and students would be exposed to each other’s religious-cultural narratives, thus improving understanding and acceptance among participating schools and their wider communities. The Mosaica Center's vision is derived from the Alexandria Declaration, which was signed in 2002 by prominent religious leaders - Jews, Muslims and Christians. The Declaration calls for an end to incitement and bloodshed in the name of religion, while promoting ongoing and continuous efforts to generate a receptive climate for dialogue among the communities involved in the Middle East conflict. JELP aims to address the deep schism between Jews living in West Jerusalem and Muslims living in East Jerusalem which affects all areas of life: the economy, society and well-being, culture, education and so on.Since education is the primary arena in which perceptions about religion, culture and society are forged, the Mosaica Center decided to

train educators who will act as agents of change in the schools, exposing pupils to cultures, morals and historical-national narratives that differ from their own. The program is designed to provide the knowledge and tools necessary for mutual understanding of different cultural-religious backgrounds, based on a multidimensional model developed by Mosaica. It moreover provides tools for coping with the phenomenon of educating for hatred and negativity towards the “Other.” The Jerusalem Inter-Religious Education Leadership Program offers an unprecedented framework to create an opportunity for continuous, structured dialogue between the Jewish and Muslim populations in Jerusalem. In addition, organizing encounters between school principals and teachers from the two parts of the city represents an exceptional approach in and of itself. A pilot program was launched in September 2004 and ended in July 2008. The program has now operated successfully through July 2011. It has included year-long, experiential dialogue workshops for principals and educators from Jewish and Muslim elementary, middle and high schools from both sides of the city, followed by educational projects initiated by the teachers and implemented in the schools.

The Center’s staff is comprised of education and technology experts, including programmers, infrastructure and program testing specialists, as well as a large videotaping unit that makes it possible for live meetings to be conducted from the Open University studios, and also broadcasts sessions and lectures that may be viewed at any time.Understanding the importance of developing teaching methods that integrate advanced technology, the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation resolved to come to the Open University’s assistance. In 2002, the Foundation made a donation designated for the Shoham Center. Today the Center devises and tests solutions for study needs in cooperation with the academic departments, and when necessary, develops and adapts them to meet the requirements of specific courses. Education technologies make it possible to improve and enrich the study material, and develop alternatives to written textbooks and face-to-face instruction sessions.It is OUI policy that every course should have its own website, functioning as a virtual study center. The online learning environment developed at the Shoham Center comprises the infrastructure and architecture for the course websites. Almost every course now has its own website, featuring many types of auxiliary and enrichment materials relating to the course. Ongoing communication takes place on the site between the students and instructors, and among the students themselves, at any time and from any place. Students can also find administrative information about the course on the site, and access the many online services offered by the OUI. During 2011, Shoham will gradually transfer the course websites from the old “Opus” learning environment to a new one, “Opal,” based on open code. Another Shoham project this year is digitizing books both in portable reader format and on the Internet.

Project Name: Joint Research Project of the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and the Rothschild Ophthalmology Foundation in ParisLocation: Neurology Department at the Hadassah University Medical Center, JerusalemVision: Studying the neural basis of visual cortex reorganization after peripheral or central nervous system damage

In 2007, the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and the Rothschild Ophthalmology Foundation in Paris

embarked on a joint research project. A donation from the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation helped launch this new project, which set out to ask important questions about the human brain, how it responds to injuries and especially how the visual cortex reacts to peripheral and central damage in the visual system. This research also explores understanding the mechanisms underlying the brain’s plasticity, as well as the brain’s healing mechanisms, which serve as the basis for developing rehabilitation treatments for patients.Research is conducted jointly by an Israeli group headed by Dr. Netta Levin, Director of the Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Unit at Hadassah University Medical

Center’s Department of Neurology, and a French group led by Dr. Sylvie Chokron of La Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild in Paris. The Hadassah team, trained to carry out high-level clinical and experimental research, is

composed of neurologists, ophthalmologists, neuroradiologists and researchers. The Rothschild Ophthalmology Foundation is a private medical institution that has been operating in conjunction with France’s public hospital system since 1990. This foundation specializes in ophthalmology and brain sciences with a focus on two strategic areas – medical service and research. Cooperation between the Israeli and French teams was undertaken with the goal of bringing together two leading hospitals that each wished to contribute their experience in this field to bring a joint research project to fruition.The project’s goal is to study processes in the visual cortex in response to various injuries along the path of vision, starting with the cornea, through the optic nerve and up to the cerebral cortex itself. The research methods will include behavioral testing as well as non-invasive imaging techniques, i.e., functional magnetic resonance imaging and DTI, the leading methods in cognitive research today. The Rothschild Caesarea Foundation’s support for this project has not only contributed to advancing research on the human brain and the development of treatment methods; it has also helped boost the status of the Functional MRI Center at Hadassah, positioning it alongside other major centers worldwide.

participation in the project, the children join the “Young Researchers Club,” where they receive training and academic supervision and take part in enrichment activities in academia and at the National Science Museum. When they reach tenth grade, the young researchers are integrated into the national project of professional career counseling and the advancement of higher education, which is run by the Council for Higher Education and academic institutions. During this time, the children can also participate in producing an e-magazine for creative writing, the first of its kind in Israel. The project, which was developed by a leading group of Arab and Jewish academics and researchers from many different fields under the leadership of Professor Majid Al-Haj, as part of the Academic Center for Human Development, was inaugurated in December 2009. Some 125 children from Jisr az-Zarqa took part in the first cycle. The results at the end of

the first year were extremely satisfying. The project was highly successful in the community and represented a source of pride for the pupils and their parents, the education system and local leadership. The positive feedback gave even greater impetus to the project, which began its second cycle in 2010 with the enrollment of 140 students. The project leaders emphasize the importance of providing broader education in general and higher education in particular among the Arab population because it empowers them as a minority group and creates a vital resource for economic development. It also contributes to decreasing poverty and unemployment. In addition, promoting excellence among an academic elite provides the means to improve the potential of Arab citizens to be better integrated into the national academic elite. The participants are determined to achieve these admittedly ambitious goals.

The “Children in Academia” project is conducted in collaboration with the Academic Center for Human Development and the

Heksherim – The Research Institute for Jewish and Israeli Literature and Culture – was founded in 2001 at Ben-

Gurion University of the Negev for the in-depth study and advancement of the ties between culture, society and community in Jewish and Israeli society. The institute’s visionary and director is Professor Yigal Schwartz, one of the leading researchers of Hebrew literature in the world and a senior literary editor.The multidisciplinary projects carried out at the institute, groundbreaking in their scope and research methods, have been made possible thanks to the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation’s donation. The center’s main

goal is to encourage groups of young researchers whose work will integrate academic excellence along with cultural sensitivity and social commitment. In 2003, thanks to a donation by the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation, the center

launched a new project entitled “The First Israelis – The State’s Founding Generation in Society and in Israeli Culture.” The project initiated a long-term study with a large number of participants on the literature created by the authors,

poets, playwrights, children’s authors and other writers who to a great extent shaped the character of Israeli culture. The research conducted under the auspices of the institute include the “Story of the South” project – focusing mainly on forming a human and cultural profile of southern Israel, as seen through the eyes of those who have lived there since the State of Israel’s first decade: residents of kibbutzim, moshavim and development towns, Bedouins and others. Another project is the “Lexicon of Israeli Authors,” which provided readers of Hebrew literature with an entire lexicon of authors in Israel; an edition of the “Lexicon of Children’s Authors in Israel” is slated

to come out at a future date. Another fascinating research project is “Hebrew Publishers – 1890-2000,” which looks at the history of Hebrew book publishing over the last one hundred years.

חברתי בשכונה בה הם מתגוררים. במסגרת התכנית, ניתנות מלגות לעשרות סטודנטים לתואר ראשון בתכנית ייחודית לפיתוח מנהיגים צעירים. הסטודנטים שמשתתפים בתכנית מקבלים מלגות בהיקף של 20 אלף שקל ודרום תל–אביב. כל יפו - כולם תושבי ומחציתם ערבים יהודים לשנה. מחצית מהסטודנטים הסטודנטים לומדים במכללה בתכניות שבחרו ללמוד בהן, ובתנאי שעמדו בדרישות הקבלה. הסטודנטים לקבוצת אקדמיים קורסים סדרת פותחה הרגילות, הלימודים תכניות על נוסף תהליכי ניהול חברתית, יזמות היהודי–ערבי, הקונפליקט של בנושאים בתכנית שמשתתפת ל–12 שעות נדרשים והסטודנטים מעשית הכשרה גם הלימודים משלבים בנוסף, ועוד. שינוי פעילות חברתית בשבוע. בשנה הראשונה הם מעורבים בפרויקטים שיזמה המכללה, ומהשנה

Project Name: Social EntrepreneurshipLocation: Academic College of Tel Aviv-Jaffa Vision: To promote social entrepreneurship in Jaffa and southern Tel Aviv

The Academic College of Tel Aviv-Jaffa was founded in 1994 as a joint venture of Tel Aviv University, the municipality of

Tel Aviv-Jaffa and the Israel Council for Higher Education. Ever since its establishment, the college has championed high standards for academic scholarship along with an unwavering commitment to the community. The founders’ decision to build the campus in Jaffa, a community beset by social and economic difficulties, underscores the particular relevance of the college's social vision.

The college initiated and administers a number of educational and social projects. In 2007 it launched the “Social Entrepreneurship” program with the full support of the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation. The program targets a characteristic failing in disadvantaged communities – passivity. Members of such communities rarely take the initiative to remedy and improve their condition and thus undermine the likelihood of sustainable social change. The program therefore aims to foster and promote social initiative and social entrepreneurship within the community.Mixed Arab-Jewish groups of college freshmen, all residents of Jaffa, are recruited to join the program. Over the course of three years, in addition to their regular

studies, they receive training in social entrepreneurship. Specifically, they are encouraged to map their community, identify problems and shortcomings, design and implement solutions, manage the implementation phase, raise funds to sustain their projects and subsequently evaluate effectiveness.Two key features make this program unique. First, the interventions designed by the students must solve a real problem in the community, and their success is measured by the actual impact of the intervention. Second, the intervention is not an academic exercise that can be discontinued or dismantled once the term is over. One of the criteria of the intervention's success is its longevity. Hence, prior to approval for an intervention to move to the implementation phase, students are required to show how it will be sustained beyond their graduation.The number of important interventions already in place attests to this program’s success. Some of the challenges they address include the need to strengthen the perceived value of education, particularly higher education; children's difficulty in coping with the transition from elementary school to junior-high school; computer illiteracy; and the challenge for young Arab women of reconciling traditional family demands and norms with their desire to study and pursue professional careers – to name but a few.

ברון בנימין אדמונד דה רוטשילד נודע באהבתו הגדולה לארץ ישראל ופעל הידי על שנוסדו במושבות כספית הברון תמך ופיתוחה. יישובה למען רבות אנשי העלייה הראשונה, הקים מושבות חדשות ורכש קרקעות בכל חלקי הארץ.

האחרון יומו עד שנה, מ–50 יותר ובמשך ,1882 מאז ממש, היה מעורב בנעשה בארץ, ולא בכדי זכה לשני תארים מחמיאים המעידים על תרומתו הגדולה: "אבי נוסדו ובפיקוחו בכספיו הידוע". ו"הנדיב היישוב" שירותי בריאות והוקמו מוסדות חינוך ומפעלי תעשייה של הראשון הממשלה ראש בן–גוריון, דוד וחקלאות. ישראל, העיד עליו: "רוטשילד לא היה סתם נדיב. הוא היה הראשון אשר עשה מעשה אדיר, נועז, ממושך ורב תוצאות". בתחילת פעילותו הסתייג הברון רוטשילד מהציונים וחשש כי הם את ראה כאשר שנים, לאחר רק מפעלו. את לסכן עשויים הציוני המפעל כלפי יחסו את שינה בארץ, היישוב התבססות והביע את הערכתו למתיישבים הראשונים ולמעשיהם. הברון ביקר

The Rothschild Center contains a large, modern permanent exhibit entitled “The Land of the Baron,” which offers a glimpse of Baron Rothschild’s unique personality and outlines his efforts to establish Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel. The exhibit presents Baron Rothschild’s endeavors from the beginning of his activity in Israel through today, over a span of 120 years. The public is invited to join the Baron on his various visits to the Land of Israel, to view objects, pictures and documentary films, to learn about the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation’s activities, and to accompany the Baron to his final resting place in Zichron Yaakov.In addition to the permanent exhibit about the Baron’s life and work, the Rothschild

Center also includes a large open space for temporary exhibits and a state-of-the-art auditorium seating 225 for cultural performances, study days, conferences, lectures, and so forth. The center features Israeli and Jewish culture over the last hundred years, through temporary exhibits and diverse educational and cultural activities held there. When the center first opened, a series of study days were organized in the auditorium – highlighting the history of Zionism, the villages founded by the Baron and much more.

Baron Edmond de Rothschild, famous for his great love of Israel, worked endlessly to help the land be settled and

developed. The Baron gave financial support to the colonies founded by members of the First Aliya, established new colonies, and bought parcels of land throughout Israel. Starting in 1882 and for over 50 years, virtually until his dying day, he remained involved in what was being done in the Land of Israel, and for good reason received two flattering titles testifying to his immense contribution: “Father of the Yishuv” and “The Known Benefactor.” Health services, educational institutions, and industrial and agricultural enterprises were all established with his money and under his guidance. David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister,

said of him: “Rothschild was not only generous; he was the first person to take tremendous, bold, prolonged action with manifold results.” When he first embarked on his activities, Baron Rothschild was wary of the Zionists, fearing they might endanger his endeavors. Since its establishment nine decades ago, the Technion has been the leading scientific and technological institute in Israel, and as such

represents a source of national pride. The most brilliant minds in Israeli science and technology have been and continue to be educated at the Technion, and comprise a driving force behind Israel’s economy. Over the years, Technion researchers and faculty members have earned national and international renown for their numerous and impressive achievements, placing the Technion at the vanguard of technological innovation. The Technion is also one of the only technology institutes in the world that includes a faculty of medicine.

Many Technion alumni are associated with important discoveries and cutting-edge innovations in areas such as micro-electronics, communications, computer science, superconductivity, fiber optics, astrophysics, water resource development and management, catalysis, biotechnology, life sciences, genetics and medicine. Thanks to Technion graduates, Israel has become one of the world leaders in high-tech.For many years, the Technion was considered a science-technology institute with a relatively young faculty and consequently had a low faculty recruitment rate. In recent years, however, as the institute’s standards continued to rise and the excellence demonstrated by its alumni made them highly sought after by major Israeli and

international companies, the Technion has faced a severe shortage of faculty, making it necessary to recruit new members on an unprecedented scale.In 2006, the Caesarea Rothschild Foundation, dedicated to promoting higher education in Israel, began supporting the "First Steps" program, which was originally launched at the Technion in 2002. Between 2006 and 2010, the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation donated two million dollars to finance the program, which aims to help the Technion recruit talented new faculty members. With this donation, the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation enabled the Technion to maintain its tradition of excellence by hiring 13 promising young academic faculty members, who will comprise the next generation of science and technology pioneers in Israel and worldwide.
